I would appreciate a definition of "try hard".

I am not on the pull, I am not trying to get my photo in the papers, I will be out with my sister, three of my daughters and a couple of friends. What, exactly, would I look like I am "trying hard" to do?

Not being snarky, as I have been accused of, just genuinely dont know!

Trying too hard to have fun. Now get yourself off to toast for a nice Amish smock and stop horrifying our sensibilities with these here jazzy sequins.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 26/02/2023 23:34

Take a pair of comfy shoes for going home with. I think you'll look great in that outfit, if you love it you'll feel confident in it and pull it off

Maireas · 26/02/2023 23:35

Dear lord, please don't wear it with trainers!! It's a special occasion, treat yourself to some fabulous footwear, not what you'd wear to put the bins out!
Go for it.

Iamnotalemming · 26/02/2023 23:36

For me the test is always 'do I feel good in it?', if yes, put it on, have a glass of champagne and enjoy yourself. Life is too short to worry about what other people think.

toastfiend · 26/02/2023 23:37

Please don't wear leggings with it, OP. Or listen to anyone who suggests you wear leggings with it.

I love the playsuit, it's fun and celebratory and I wouldn't call it tacky whatsoever. If I'm being honest, I don't love the shoes. I think delicate spindly heels can look a bit dated right now, so I'd probably go boots or chunky platform heels with it, but also if the first ones make you happy then go for it.

Ultimately, it's your birthday, wear what makes you feel good and happy and ignore those who want you wrapped in your woollens and hiding out of sight for fear you might (shock!) attact some attention on your birthday.

Galadriel90 · 26/02/2023 23:38

Love the playsuit! I hope you have a brilliant birthday and ignore all the sour faces on here boring on about tarty/too short/old knees. I bet you'll look amazing 😻

Maireas · 26/02/2023 23:39

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/02/2023 23:29

Yeah - I'd hardly ever say this but yes too old. But with this one anyone over 35 would be too old, because it looks like some sort of bon bon wrapper, and it is only extreme youth that would allow someone to (sort of) get away with looking like a cracker. Also very high heels are unkind to the appearance of knees (at any age) and better worn with mid length skirts.

Ye gods, anyone over 35 too old?
You don't turn into a wizened old crone when you hit 36! What nonsense.

WentForAWalk · 26/02/2023 23:42

I'd wear it !! It's great.

ClairDeLaLune · 26/02/2023 23:43

I hate the attitude of being too old for things. Fuck off with that ageism! If you like it and feel good it in then wear it. It looks perfect for the occasion. Happy birthday!

Sandra1984 · 26/02/2023 23:44

@PyongyangKipperbang I would appreciate a definition of "try hard".

My definition of "try hard" would be Madonna on her instagram sporting crazy plastic surgery, butt implants and shorts tongue kissing a 22 yr old rapper trying to demonstrate the world how edgy, liberated and young at heart she is. Fact is she's pretty edgy, liberated and young at heart but she's trying soooooo hard to prove it that it put doubts in my head. There's a fine line between looking sexy and looking desperate. I'm not saying by any means this is your case OP, I'm just trying to word the definition of "try hard". It's totally fine to go into drag queen mode for your 50th birthday and have a blast with friends and family. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, you only live once etc...

AnneShirleysNewDress · 26/02/2023 23:45

I love it. Wear it and have a fantastic birthday!

Does your DH realise the average first time buyer in the UK is 37? Does he realise to rent a room in a run-down shared house in most cities is about a grand a month plus bills? What planet is he on? This was not normal 20 or 30 years ago. Is he living in 1920, where kids left school at 14, worked down a pit, moved out at 17 and married and had kids at 18. He sounds cruel. At 18 and whilst in full time education I wouldn’t take a penny off my children, let alone kicking them out. Most of friends still have the kids at home in their mid-twenties, after coming home after graduating.

Fiddledediddledeedee · 26/02/2023 23:50

Shoes great if you’re used to the height
Playsuit - mutton, lamb comes to mind

Sorry…….you asked,

Possibly the wrong thread? But sounds like the DH is an absolute prick.

If there's one thing that's dated and elderly it's this ridiculous saying.
