Sil giving my baby tea

abi9396 · 26/02/2023 17:57

My baby is 6 months in 2 weeks. He stayed the night and mil and sil house last night. He came back with tea stains over his bib and sock. My eldest son then told me that sil had given him some of her tea to drink. Mil, sil and my partner are all denying this and claims the baby spilled her tea on accident and that’s how it’s over his bib and sock. If they did can this be harmful at his age I am worried?

I also said FF babies

Yes, but that is only for FF babies and only small amounts if necessary during hot weather.

So there are lots of conditions with it and generally isn’t necessary in the UK where we don’t often get hot enough weather to necessitate it.

The point still stands that it can be dangerous for all babies to have water due to the developing kidneys as you risk water intoxication and over hydration.

Can you explain how that works with FF babies? As for example a 5oz bottle is 5oz of water every feed! Plus if your baby is unwell you are told to water down feeds to help rehydration and BF babies parents are told to offer water between feeds especially if baby is constipated which can happen!

Research published recently showed that most of the population will have allergies but 2060.

A study proved that children who lived on farms had far fewer allergies as they were exposed to more bacteria. We are killing the planet and ourselves with it.

Put the kettle on and have a cheery brew.

What does this comment even mean? What’s living on a farm got to do with being given tea as a baby? Farmers don’t routinely feed tea to babies more than anyone else, and yes still doesn’t help immunity. What sort of tea are you drinking?

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 26/02/2023 21:33

MrWhippersnapper · 26/02/2023 21:27

So it can be given, which contradicts your point that it couldn’t

I didn’t say it couldn’t. I was responding to the poster who said “wtf” because they weren’t aware water can be dangerous to babies.

And yes, I know you said FF babies.

Abouttimemum · 26/02/2023 21:35

DS has tea and has done for a couple of years (he’s almost 4) I wouldn’t have been happy at 6 months tbh but as a one off I’d get over it - however, I’d be mostly upset about the fact one side of the fence is lying.

Breastfed babies should never be given water under 6 months because it can stop them getting the nutrients from breast milk that they need.

Interesting, totally goes against what myself, others my age, my daughter etc was told by their hcps not about adding nutritional value, but never heard that water could block nutrients! I will have to look into that as its something I've never heard of before!

Your post above says it can be dangerous for ALL babies, which is clearly not true

So none of yous were given tea as a baby..... I'm early 40s and my mum done this with my kids 15yrs ago.

Its hardly child abuse, i see it more being spoilt with other relatives.

In 20yrs time were going to have a generation of kids with no immunity or personalities.

Of course it’s abusive / neglectful / ignorant / uneducated etc. Tea does not give anyone immunity or personality.

I was what I consider to be an early tea drinker - I was a ‘60s/70s child. By early, I mean about age eight. I’d be askance at that now and definitely would not allow that with my own children. But for a baby or toddler is awful.

MarigoldFeatherstone · 26/02/2023 21:55

We checked with GP about tea and baby. Quite harmless she said. Not coffee.
The caffeine in tea is harmless at those concentration.
In coffee, my understanding was other elements that caused a problem.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 26/02/2023 21:57

Going back to the original point tea no wouldn't bother me, one of mine had 90 percent warm milk with a little bit of tea in a drink or hot chocolate before bed from about 6 months, only way I could get milk into them!! They didn't like the taste of milk so I had to get it into them somehow!!

StarStarBrightShine · 26/02/2023 22:03

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 26/02/2023 18:02

Yeah, they would never look after my child unsupervised ever again.

You can’t trust them.

Absolutely this, and it’s something my sister would do, and I wouldn’t leave her to look after my cat.

Dont ever leave your baby with them again

A young baby shouldn’t be having cow’s milk at all.

BorgQueen · 26/02/2023 22:06

Thankfully my DD isn’t a swivel eyed loon and wouldn’t give a stuff about something as insignificant as a teeny sip of tepid tea at an age when babies are trying new flavours and textures.
My Grandson is nearly 4 and loves his own little cup of tea and a rich tea biscuit, didn’t realise it’s akin to giving him a crack pipe 🙄

Refused to drink formula at all from 6 months! This was 95! Dr advised cows milk which they didn't like either! Lots of yoghurts, cheese and flavoured milk! Not much other option!

Why set the bar at crack pipe? Yes it’s better than crack, but tea and biscuit at 4 months is nothing short of crap parenting. But then it’s better than giving illegal drugs so of course you are doing amazing! Well done you.

Would you have lied to her about it, though?

‘Protecting’ children from some things can do them more harm than good.

I missread 4 months rather than 4. Babies at 5 months still aren’t trying new flavours though, it’s not weaning time yet, so that is still crap parenting. A 4 year old doesn’t need tea either, but decaff is better, but seriously what’s wrong with warm milk?

BlueSeaWave · 26/02/2023 22:12

UrsulaPandress · 26/02/2023 18:01

Baby tea is a thing. Tea with extra milk.

Fuck not for my baby.
How is that no dairy before 1 and caffiene? On a developing brain FFS? It might have been a thing like lead pain and thalidomide was a thing, but er times change.

Forgooodnesssakenow · 26/02/2023 22:13

UrsulaPandress · 26/02/2023 18:01

Baby tea is a thing. Tea with extra milk.

You do know you shouldn't actually give that to babies though right?

Tea contains tannins which block iron absorption, babies are prone to anaemia. Also too much dairy can block iron absorption too so an all round terrible idea and that's before factoring in the caffeine.

That said op I wouldn't panic about a sip, it is stupid behaviour though

It doesn’t, your point was daft and didn’t really make any sense. Protecting or exposing 5 months old to tea isn’t a thing, tea isn’t an allergen, it provides no nutritional value or health benefit, makes no difference to the immune system as it doesn’t contain bacteria or anything they need exposing to. It’s just pointless really.

3kidswouldfinishanyoneoff · 26/02/2023 22:14

God help you when your baby starts crawling and puts all sorts in their mouth op.

ThepicofmyhairymingeprovesIamsober · 26/02/2023 22:15

To be honest I’d be more worried about your SIL leaving a cup of tea within baby’s reach with the possibility of scalding it rather than it being given a wee taste.
