Am I being unreasonable to think that turnips and coffee make the best combination?

Prefer a mangelwurzel myself.

ChefsSalad · 23/02/2023 20:35

I'm saving money ans the environment by sacking off the kir royales and using turnip puree in lambrini instead.

JellyMouse · 23/02/2023 20:36

I was enjoying the turnip thread in chat! Doesn’t look like they are that easy to source, the only major supermarket stocking them is Sainsbury (£1.70 kg).

L1ttledrummergirl · 23/02/2023 20:36

Absolutely not unreasonable at all. Throw I some nettles and you have an amazingly healthy meal.
If you get a third job you can afford someone to pick it for you, anything less and your a lazy slob who should be happy to starve.

Moonshine86 · 23/02/2023 20:37

I’m going to put in a few more shifts to ensure I have more than enough of the beauty’s! Not working hard enough at present.

watcherintherye · 23/02/2023 20:38

Wouldnt be my choice! Nothing goes with turnips like a cup of Lapsang Souchong.

Waitrose near me have them!

HopLeaps · 23/02/2023 20:39

I dream of the day when I can work enough hours to buy my very own turnip.

I'm fortunate to live in an ethnically diverse area where local shops have lots of turnips all year. They go great in curry. Seriously.

PerkingFaintly · 23/02/2023 20:41

Only if it's ersatz coffee.

Who do we think we are, expecting luxurious imported coffee when acorns are a home grown produce to be cherished?

TheHateIsNotGood · 23/02/2023 20:42

The Sun turned an England Football Manager into a Turnip many years ago (Graham Taylor) so if you like to drink coffee with your morning tabloid then fine by me as it's already been done (early 90s).

echt · 23/02/2023 20:44

Following this with much amusement. Turnips are available in all big supermarkets in Melbourne, though always in a niche section, and I rarely use them.
Years ago I made a turnip salad with hot gin vinaigrette from the Delicious Vegetables Sainsbury's cookery book. Not kidding. It's a thing.

Ifailed · 23/02/2023 20:47

do you mean turnips or swedes, there's a very important difference?

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 23/02/2023 20:50

Endless fun to be had with amusingly shaped turnips apparently, according to Therese Baldrick.

Vital to differentiate. My late DH was from the NE and called the white fleshed purple-topped thing a swede, and the much bigger orange-fleshed beast a turnip, whereas I did the opposite.

Liorae · 23/02/2023 20:54

Mashed swedes with lots of black pepper and butter, or even better, bacon grease. Delicious! Not sure how nutritious.

This just made my sides hurt. 🤣

I totally agree tho! They are SO expensive!

jgw1 · 23/02/2023 21:00

Does anyone know what the tariffs are to import turnips.

My esteemed representative in parliament DK Lemon is exercised by the tariffs on imported lemons that we can now as a result of Brexit slash from 0%.

Turnips give me the trots. Adding coffee seems like it’d make for a windy day. Better invest in a wi d turbine for my garden, I’ll make my money back in days.

You were right and your DH had it exactly the wrong way round.

My DH is from NE and used to be a bit hazy about the difference until I put him tight.

@echt Intrigued by this. Recipe please?

LucyLeave · 23/02/2023 21:53

If you can't afford to buy turnips you are not working hard enough.

Turnips are like anemic carrots and swedes are like rock hard round things.

NellietheElephantpackedhertrunks · 23/02/2023 22:00

tuts that’s why you young people can’t afford property. If you just cut down your turnip consumption to one a month and stopped buying all those fancy turnip coffees, you could buy your own mansion in a few months like the boomers did*

*if you also win the lottery or come into a massive inheritance.
