Am I being unreasonable to think that turnips and coffee make the best combination?

Nothing to add
just trying out my new name.

Exasperatednow · 23/02/2023 22:09

Percentage of doom. Turnip coffee for everyone.

Where’s Baldrick when you need him?

thistimelastweek · 23/02/2023 22:11

I loves a turnip I do.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2023 22:13

I only have swedes Sad , what should I drink with them?

RaininSummer · 23/02/2023 22:54

I made a turnip curry. It wasn't that nice

midlifecrash · 23/02/2023 22:55

As rotten tomatoes were the traditional choice for throwing (eg at useless politicians) does anyone have a view on the optimum stage of deliquescence of a turnip to use for the same purpose?

Oakbeam · 23/02/2023 23:00

I couldn’t help but think of Baldric.

Akvavit. While saying "Skål", obvs.

(Lovely to see you BTW. Hope you're keeping well. Mine's a Brew, ta...)

Endless fun to be had with amusingly shaped turnips apparently, according to Therese Baldrick.

But wouldn't you rather have fun with a turnip-shaped ... oh, sorry, it's not one of those threads in active.

You may turn into a neep heid if you have too much coffey

Maverickess · 24/02/2023 00:19

We're never going to earn enough money for our own turnips if we sit around posting on Mumsnet....... You're wasting time you should be working!!!!

Following this with much amusement. Turnips are available in all big supermarkets in Melbourne, though always in a niche section, and I rarely use them.
Years ago I made a turnip salad with hot gin vinaigrette from the Delicious Vegetables Sainsbury's cookery book. Not kidding. It's a thing.

I understand that an Australian 'pumpkin' is actually a butternut squash? I dread to think what an Australian turnip is

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 24/02/2023 00:44

Turnips. Always associated them with the low points of Tess of the Durbevilles. Am I missing something ?

GCAcademic · 24/02/2023 00:49

If you know how to meal plan properly, a decent-sized turnip can feed a family of five for nine days. Puts your Mumsnet Chicken to shame.

CallieQ · 24/02/2023 00:53

Nah you can't dunk em

pigsinoodies · 24/02/2023 01:08

Honestly, I really like turnips, and turnip greens. And that young woman on Masterchef blew my mind with her turnip meal.

Turnips are like anemic carrots and swedes are like rock hard round things.

Nope that's a parsnip.

Parsnips are the anaemic carrots.
Turnips are purply with white tops
Swedes are yellow round and hairy

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/02/2023 04:37

@JellyMouse , I’ve had no trouble finding turnips in Asda - they go in my multi-veg winter soups, and now and then chopped small with other roots, to bulk out a mince-based dish.

the80sweregreat · 24/02/2023 04:47

My mum used to bake Marrows and it was delicious and roast parsnips are equally lovely.
I was brought up on veggies and like them , but I've never tasted turnips

Trumpton · 24/02/2023 05:10

When I have coffee I take my turnips with me so I have someone to chat to.

I've got mangelwurzels in my garden,
I've got mangelwurzels in my shed,
I've got mangelwurzels in the bathroom,
and a turnip for a head!

Turnips used to be nearer the size of a football. Now there are just small ones available - upshot is they are flavourless and hard.
The big turnips stayed in/on the ground most of the winter so I suppose they have to harvest them earlier now so they can plant the next crop.
I love turnip btw.

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/02/2023 06:31

if you have neeps and tatties they are actually referring to a swede!

how strange that some people have opposing definitions.
