childminders on MN when someone is paying them to look after their dc

shinola · 08/02/2008 22:55

am looking for a childminder so has a look athe childminders and staffroom bit of mumsntet

and see loads of messages from childminder, in work hours on line, in time they are be paid to work by us hard working mums, moaning about us hard working mums.

how dare they? I mean, if you are going to moan, do it in your own time

I don't have time to go on mumnset when I'm with ds, how do they find the time? what happens to the kis they look after? and t add insult to injury they are using their paid time to moan about people who are paying them

but not even that, I can't believe any reputable childminder or nanny can be on mumsnet when they are supposed to be looking after kids

money for old rope

expat just wrote this on another thread
she's very wise you know...

"Don't waste your time being offended, life is too precious for this"

I expect I'm missing the point again, but never mind.

FAQ · 09/02/2008 00:27

yep - missing the point again (I know expat is very wise we've spent many a late night up on MN drinking together....or should that be the other way round?)

Sorry Wotz - shouldn't have vented my frustrations out on you.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 09/02/2008 00:28

Feck this, I'm off to do some work.

Goodnight all

TabithaTwitchett · 09/02/2008 00:28

I watch her as much as I can. I am not perfect but know my own child and what her activities are - I am happy to take onboard any risks identified from leaving her alone. Even if I knew a child as much as my own, I would not feel it was appropriate to make the same judgement.

Wotz · 09/02/2008 00:29

thanks, appreciated

FAQ · 09/02/2008 00:33

TT - but being on a computer in the same room as the child is not the same as leaving them alone.

TabithaTwitchett · 09/02/2008 00:38

If I am at work being paid to produce invoices, no manager is going to think it's good that I am shopping on ebay. Both are done in the same room, don't see the argument.

FAQ · 09/02/2008 00:42

but if you currently have no invoices to produce (as you've just finished load) and decide to have a quick check of your email/MN it wouldn't be stopping you doing your work.

And TBH I'm yet to meet ANYONE that works ALL day without a break to talk/coffee/cigarette/time waste/etc/etc/etc

If a CM's mindee is sat happily pre-occupied with something is it really so bad if the CM spends a few seconds/minutes having a quick look/post on MN? So long as they can still see the child in question???

nancy75 · 09/02/2008 00:44

agree with TT its about being paid to do a job, when i was at work we could only use the interner on our (unpaid) lunch break, any use on company time was a disaplinary matter

TabithaTwitchett · 09/02/2008 00:47

If I have finished my work (not producing invoices by the way) I get other work to do. It takes more than seconds to log in, read, and reply to posts. It may be possible to do that but it is not professional. If the child is asleep then load the washing machine/ clean up/ hoover/ help out generally

FAQ · 09/02/2008 00:50

god you must be boring to work with, never stop and chat to your colleagues etc etc .

It usually takes me less than a minute to log in and post........usually because the computer is permanently on - and I always have a window open with MN

But seriously would you prefer it if a mindee is pre-occupied playing independently that the CM sits and twiddles their thumbs????

Scramble · 09/02/2008 00:51

Dare I say it I think OP does have a point.

T breaks fair enough, but if a CM was on MN posting all day I would say they are not taking their job seriously and I would not want to pay them. I wouldn't expect nursery staff to be sitting in the corner of the play room posting all day.

I say this out of respect for childminders, to me it is a proper job that should be taken seriously. It is not a just a job that any mum can do if they can't get another job.

So if they are a CM that occasionaly post through the day or goes on for a while while mindees are sleeping fair enough, they don't have to justify that, but if they have mindees and have been posting for an hour on chat then perhaps they do.

FAQ · 09/02/2008 00:54

gosh I think some of you just haven't learnt the art of multi-tasking

TabithaTwitchett · 09/02/2008 00:55

If I was in charge I would ban all tv and Internet. I manage it at work so why should it be any different for you?

FAQ · 09/02/2008 00:57

you would ban internet - does that include the use of any computer???

I only ask as DS2's EXCELLENT nursery has computers, they play games on them, including occasionally ones on the Cbeebies website!

And excuse me - but while I'm a SAHM I'll do what I like - I'm not a CM.

Scramble · 09/02/2008 00:57

Perhaps I would still be working in nurseries if I was able to surf the net when ever I fancied in the play room .

Oh well I will have to sit at home with no kids and surf to my hearts content .

scottishmummy · 09/02/2008 01:00

if you pay the CM wages you set the expectations, and if that is no Internet then fair enough.

TabithaTwitchett · 09/02/2008 01:01

To be honest, I'm not bothered who is a SAHM or CM. In a normal corporate world most know that surfing the internet is not a reality. If you get to then great!

Scramble · 09/02/2008 01:01

Ach I have ran out of popcron so time for bed .

FAQ · 09/02/2008 01:02

but a child minder isn't a corporate business.........

scottishmummy · 09/02/2008 01:02

is popcron More or less fattening than popcorn

TabithaTwitchett · 09/02/2008 01:04

If anyone does not go to work apart from to make a living then they are very lucky!

FAQ · 09/02/2008 01:07

who said anything about not going to work to make a living?

I mearly said that a childminder would really be classed as corporate business!

TabithaTwitchett · 09/02/2008 01:10

The main thing is that no-one wants to pay a CM to look at MN. If the child is happily playing then help the household, not yourself!

scottishmummy · 09/02/2008 01:15

this taps into many working mums fear CM sat on Lazy arse Internet whilst working mum out slogging to pay mortgage , CM and Internet.
