To think people that routinely iron have far too much time on their hands?

Do people really still routinely iron their clothing?

The keyword being routinely. I am known to iron for events, or if I have a fussy top requiring attention or the kids need to look smart. But do people actually iron everything? Why??

I iron my work uniforms. I can tell which of my colleagues iron and those who don't. Most of my own clothes don't need ironing, but I'll iron if needed. I iron jeans, pyjamas and pillowcases because they feel nicer.

DP irons his outfit most mornings, takes him a few minutes max.

My MIL spends 6 hours a week ironing for her and FIL. I have no idea how she makes ironing for two people last that long, though she was horrified when I told her I don't iron pants and tea towels 🤣. I think she just enjoys having time on her own and likes to use it as an excuse not to see anyone.

It's the people who iron sheets that confuse me most.

Why?

luckylavender · 19/02/2023 21:19

So many rude people on this thread. What I chose to do in my own time is my business. Imagine if I started poking fun at your activities.

FredPolice · 19/02/2023 21:21

I have ADHD, and ironing is the one domestic job that I do, because it has instant and pleasing results. That said, I must now be ironing stuff that was generated in August 2022, as it's 'hot weather' clothes. In my defence, I lost the ironing.

I saw a friend complaining on her Instagram stories about a pile of ironing. She moved the camera to show that it was a pile of clothes for her 10 month old, as if anyone was going to raise any eyebrows over a baby wearing a non-ironed sleepsuit.

99% of ironing is busy work.

In your opinion.

LeandraDear · 19/02/2023 21:22

People love to boast about the fact that they don't iron! I actually can't imagine what kind of clothes they are wearing and if you are not ironing bedding then you either have a crumpled mess or cheap polyester mix bedding ( I suspect the latter). I love the end result of ironing which is just a part of my relatively ordered life 😂 but like others have said hate getting the board and iron out and back. My H does that for me. I was raised to be clean and tidy.

I think you are right about your MIL - she's part of the "can't be arsed and no more fucks to give club " 😂😂😂

I think they are probably those kind of people who think sitting down or relaxing is a sin. Skinny, nervy types who can't complete a thought.

Quite regularly spend time sitting on my arse doing nothing, definitely couldn't be described as skinny or nervy but I still manage to find the time to do my ironing - it's just a weekly household chore like clearing out of date crap in the fridge, wiping down the kitchen cabinets or cleaning the bin.

Ironed clothes just look tidier & smarter & it really doesn't take that long if you keep on top of it.

Purpleberet · 19/02/2023 21:35

I mostly avoid buying clothes that need ironing. But I iron the bed sheets every week. I put it off, then once I get started I find it really satisfying. Stick some rubbish tv on or listen to something while I’m doing it.

People always ask me why I bother. I do it for me. I so look forward to getting into bed when the sheets have been ironed and clean on 😁

If only I was skinny …
I iron because I can’t stand crumpled clothes or sheets. I do it watching tv and find it very therapeutic. I’d far rather iron than cook.

Wannabegreenfingers · 19/02/2023 21:42

I iron all mine and children's clothes it takes no time at all. Non ironed clothes, don't sit right and feel uncomfortable.

I don't iron bedding, underwear, t-towels or any other non clothing items.

Pylerbot · 19/02/2023 21:43

I detest ironing however don’t really have a choice but to regularly do it due to work uniforms, club uniforms and such like. I definitely don’t have too much time on my hands, it’s very much the opposite but needs must 🤷🏼‍♀️

You're giving this far too much head space.

Ponoka7 · 19/02/2023 21:45

"Too much time on your hands" is a belittling phrase, usually aimed at women. I dry in a dry buddy, so most our stuff doesn't need ironing. Some of my summer cotton midi dresses need ironing. There's television series that I watch, so I combine the two. As said there's people who would say the same about those who post on forums.

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 19/02/2023 21:45

Yabu I love ironing! I iron a couple of hours a week and finding it therapeutic. I know I’m weird though 😆

Oopsididitagaintomorrow · 19/02/2023 22:06

See now I can't see how people cope without ironing (genuinely mean this, not being goady). I hang stuff up to dry so carefully but it still looks creased and needs an iron to look tidy.
I bloody hate ironing with a passion - a lovely lovely woman does my basket of ironing for me every week and it comes back looking amazing x

Fizbosshoes · 19/02/2023 22:07

I iron school uniform, shirts and bedding because I think all are nicer when ironed. It probably takes 1-1.5 hours once a week. It's one of the few household chores that can be done watching TV.
As other pps have said is basically preference/priorities. DH often potters around in the kitchen faffing about making a meal with lots of ingredients, which might take 1.5 hrs or more, whereas I would choose to make something quicker/simpler

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 19/02/2023 22:23

We stayed with DGM once for a month or so, she was so horrified that every scrap of fabric we owned wasn't going to be ironed after we'd done a wash that she snuck it into the utility room and ironed the lot. And buggered up the knicker elastic in all mine and DMs pants. So that was nice.

Bluesandwhites · 23/02/2023 21:51

OoooohMatron · 19/02/2023 21:15

Please can you provide any evidence of this batshit claim? Death by Tefal, who knew 😂

This claim has some truth, if you google "toxic fibres". Have you ever breathed in fumes when you are ironing a synthetic fabric? I have, and now try to avoid synthetics, and certainly don't iron them. Fibres such as acrylics have petrochemicals in them, and even cotton has chemical fertilizers in it, unless it's organic cotton.

Bluesandwhites · 23/02/2023 21:57

P.S. I am not against ironing, what I would term as common sense ironing such as shirts and blouses, trousers and skirts, but would not iron bedding. I have noticed that people who iron professionally often have to wear a neoprene wrist/hand support, due to repetitive strain.

Riverlee · 23/02/2023 22:10

I obviously have a different mindset to op, as I do not think that I ironers have too much time on their hands, but just choose to spend their time differently,.

i hold my hands up, I’m an ironer. If I don’t iron, my clothes would be creased. and I also give sheets a quick going over. I do look at my clothes to see if I could get away without ironing, but very few would look okay. Out of the eight shorts I ironed on Sunday, probably one would pass the muster. But only just

DoubleFunMum · 23/02/2023 22:18

One of my neighbours irons so much that she has the board permanently up in her living room. Don't really get that.

SenecaFallsRedux · 23/02/2023 22:23

There is another thread about a landlord's inspection where the landlord had sent a notice out about what level of tidiness they expected. It referred to "not leaving ironing out." I have to admit that is an alien concept to me. I almost never iron although I do have a travel steamer that I use sometimes.

DH's dress shirts get sent out to the laundry; most of our clothes can be tumble dried and/or hung while damp with few wrinkles, and as for bedding, no way am I going to iron sheets. For posters who thinks that means we sleep on polyester sheets, we have 100 percent cotton high thread count supima cotton that is wrinkle resistant (bought from Lands End.) They come out of the dryer with few wrinkles.

As for children's clothes, I'm American so I never had to deal with school uniforms. They wore jeans and tee shirts mostly.

Zanatdy · 23/02/2023 22:25

I used to iron all the time, now I rarely do. The iron came out this week as my son had an interview at the palace (summer job) - otherwise never comes out anymore. My mum also irons everything, sheets, underwear, you name it she irons it

MrsCarson · 23/02/2023 22:53

I only iron what needs doing. So usually it's teeshirts, blouses and my work uniforms.
No socks, undies, tea towels and sheets are ironed in this house.
Unlike my godmothers house she had 5 kids and ironed socks for gods sake like she wasn't busy enough.
