To think people that routinely iron have far too much time on their hands?

Do people really still routinely iron their clothing?

The keyword being routinely. I am known to iron for events, or if I have a fussy top requiring attention or the kids need to look smart. But do people actually iron everything? Why??

I iron everything because even with a tumble dryer it comes out slightly creased. If you have enough time to come on mumsnet you have enough time to iron 😆

Timeforachangeisitnot · 19/02/2023 20:50

I am in the ironing camp. Not everything - no towels, socks, underwear. I wear a lot of casual / sports wear which doesn’t need ironing, and hate the starchy pressed jeans look.
I do iron tea towels - my mother used to tell me the high heat sanitised them, but as they get thrown in the drawer until needed , that seems moot. But it’s habit.
Ironing can be thinking time, catch up tv / podcast time, or just calming when there’s something winding me up. And yes, DH does as much as I do. Whoever puts the board up empties the basket.
Its not a bad habit - but if it’s not for you , so what, I don’t care.

I stopped ironing years ago when I realised the creases drop out after some body heat.
Its bad for you too it gives off a gas that can kill you.

Have any evidence to back that up?

Theos · 19/02/2023 20:53

Ironing kills bacteria ? What bacteria? How long for, how harmful is it ?

this sounds bollocks and I like ironing

Ragwort · 19/02/2023 20:55

I think it's slightly sneering to say 'people have too much time on their hands if they are ironing'. What do you think people should be doing with their 'spare' time otherwise? It is acceptable to spend time gardening, decorating, playing with your DC, visiting family, doing an OU degree, training for a marathon, knitting, on line dating etc etc? So long as no one is being forced into doing some ironing what does it matter?

There's plenty of things other people do that I wouldn't choose to do ... but whether people iron or not is hardly worth thinking about.

purpledalmation · 19/02/2023 20:56

Once in a blue moon, but my brother in law irons his bedding! What a wast of time.

amicissimma · 19/02/2023 20:56

I like ironing. I find it soothing.

And slipping into freshly ironed sheets ... mmmmmn!

I don't watch much TV, so that frees up some nice therapeutic ironing time.

Wrinkyclothes · 19/02/2023 20:34

I am curious though.... What am I missing with unironed bedding? I love climbing into a freshly made bed but didn't think it could get any better?!

There is nothing better than getting into a bed made with freshly ironed sheets. All crisp and smooth.

beachcitygirl · 19/02/2023 20:58

Yabu

I do notice when people (and especially kids) in unironed clothes. I iron on a Saturday morning for as long as saturday Kitchen lasts. Other half irons regularly. He likes ironed bed clothes

FastFood · 19/02/2023 20:58

I just iron my shirts and my blouses. That I tend to wear everyday or every other day.

I don't mind spending 1h every two weeks ironing them, and I absolutely can't stand creased shirts.

I cringe when I see people with creased shirts.
Shirts are brilliant but you have to work to deserve them. They need love. Don't treat them like a tee-shirt. Show them some respect.

grafittiartist · 19/02/2023 20:59

Love ironing! So satisfying. And nice warm clean clothes to sort out.
I know I am weird!

Both my daughters don't iron and laugh at me for ironing, but they say they can tell the difference between ironed and un-ironed bedding and they love ironed bedding

Crostimosti · 19/02/2023 21:03

I have very little spare time and I iron most things - not socks/leggings/towels etc but general clothes and bedding yes.

I prefer the way it looks and feels to have ironed clothes and ironed bedding is lovely.

I do a couple of sessions a week in the evening watching TV or my husband will do it. He needs ironed shirts and trousers for work.

I'm still watching TV but getting a job done at the same time - can't really see an issue! Doesn't it burn calories too? ( not that you'd know to look at me!)

BorisJohnsonsHair · 19/02/2023 21:06

I iron because I prefer natural fibres, which look terrible if they're creased.

Hate ironing but it's a necessary evil if you like cotton.

solvendie · 19/02/2023 21:08

My DH irons everything for all of us. He watches rugby or football while ironing. I love getting my freshly-ironed pile of clothes to put away and I think it helps our clothes last longer.

Does your DH have a single brother?

You can’t think of anything worse? War, famine, natural disasters? Or even just a bad week at work - even that would be much worse!

Do you always take everything so literally?

Bonjovispjs · 19/02/2023 21:10

I don't even own an iron. Growing up my Mum ironed everything, including socks snd underwear.

ProseccoOnIce · 19/02/2023 21:11

Totally agree!

My very part-time working friends were horrified that I don't iron.

Full-time working single parent - no chance!!!

@Theos well known that hot steam kills bacteria. Hence why hospital laundry is steam ironed. Learnt that at 18 on my first week of SRN training.

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/02/2023 21:12

Got rid of mine years ago.

Erm yes! Work wear and school uniforms.
Not through choice though!

AlwaysLatte · 19/02/2023 21:14

We (DH and I share it) iron shirts, linen clothes, formal trousers (eg school trousers, we have two boys at secondary so 10 x trousers and 10 x shirts per week). We don't iron bed linen in good weather but the tumble drier wrinkles it badly so in this weather we iron that. Otherwise everything else is carefully hung so that it doesn't need it.

mrsbn1988 · 19/02/2023 21:15

I am intrigued to know what all these fabrics are that never need to be ironed? What are people wearing? Surely not every item in your wardrobe doesn't need an iron running over it every now and again?
^
I iron what needs ironing. My mother also comes from a generation who ironed everything. I can't be doing with ironing tea towels and underwear. Will do school uniform, bedding etc.

There's a certain air of one-upmanship about people who "don't own an iron," laughing at all the idiots who dare waste their time. Claiming that "no one notices" that their clothes aren't ironed. I LOL. People notice. They just don't say anything.^

Please can you provide any evidence of this batshit claim? Death by Tefal, who knew 😂
