To think people that routinely iron have far too much time on their hands?

Do people really still routinely iron their clothing?

The keyword being routinely. I am known to iron for events, or if I have a fussy top requiring attention or the kids need to look smart. But do people actually iron everything? Why??

I iron as little as possible. There is a reason why bedspreads exist & it's to hide the creases in Egyptian cotton bedding.

I'm a demon at folding though. So satisfying.

Itgoesalittlesomethinglikethis · 19/02/2023 20:24

Christ almighty we had a hankie and underwear ironer (a grandparent). Another grandparent ironed bedding. DH said I had ironing PTSD because of my family needing to iron fecking EVERYTHING. I even witnessed one grandparent ironing the wall over some brown paper (meant to bring certain stains off). Needless to say I don't iron anything unless I really have to. I couldn't be friends with someone who ironed bedding.

WonderingWanda · 19/02/2023 20:25

I hate ironing and try to avoid it but I am a complete slattern when it comes to dealing with washing piles so sometimes the clothes come out of the tumble warm and just get chucked in a scrunched up pile in the laundry basket and left, then some more on top and by the time I get back to them they're so creased that they are unwearable. Same with the drying rack. Leave it there for a week and it's becomes so dry it's almost a solid. I don't know why I'm so useless but it is these problems that result in me having to iron things.

WandaWonder · 19/02/2023 20:25

I iron school and work shirts

ChaToilLeam · 19/02/2023 20:29

We iron shirts and dresses, cotton PJs and pillowcases. Some things look and feel much better ironed.

I’m sure that there are things other people do that we don’t. Who cares? It’s our time to spend as we wish.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 19/02/2023 20:31

I iron most clothes, but not things like PJs and bedding (although have on occasion). I definitely don’t have too much time on my hands. We’re really, really busy but I absolutely hate creased clothes. I know people say that the creases drop out or it’s not noticeable, but it is to me. Plus clothes free nicer when ironed.

AtomicBlondeRose · 19/02/2023 20:32

I like ironing. I don’t do everything but things look nicer ironed. It doesn’t seem like a massive chore or a source of stress to me so I don’t need anyone else to worry about it on my behalf. The two people who were most vocal about me “having too much time on my hands” because I iron were my ex-SIL and MIL and both of them watch more TV in a day than I watch in a week, so I took their opinion with a rather large punch of salt. I prop a book up and read while I iron - it’s a skill all right but I’ve had plenty of practice.

Exactly this. I don't iron fuck-all as there is never any need to. If others want to iron stuff then crack on! IDGAF if people want to spend half their waking hours ironing.

Oddly, the people who DO iron a lot seem to be getting sniffy and huffy and offended that other people don't. The non-ironers are pretty laid back, and 'matter of fact.' The 'ironers' seem to be getting a bit offended that others choose to not iron their stuff. LOL. How odd.

housemaus · 19/02/2023 20:33

The only time I've ironed since I was at school (we ironed our own school shirts, so at least I learned how!) has been for a couple of funerals - the only smart black dresses I own do need ironing, and I only use them for funerals.

Otherwise - I have linen bedding that looks nicest a bit scrunchy, and all my other clothes just... don't need ironing? Maybe the odd baggier tshirt (which I don't care about looking creased, tbh), but most of my stuff is made of fabrics or in styles that it doesn't make a difference. Maybe if you have fancier clothes out of nicer fabrics it's more apparent!

A question for the ironers who do it e.g. once a week - do you only do a day of washing and drying once a week, or do you save dried items up until ironing day and not wear them before then? Like, if I do a wash on a Monday, I might wear a top or dress from it on the Tuesday or Wednesday. But if I did once-a-week-ironing on a Sunday and preferred my clothes ironed, I'd be waiting all week for a particular thing OR I'd have to get the ironing board out just for one thing.

Maybe I'm overthinking it because I have no idea where our iron even is and I don't think we have an ironing board (last funeral I went to I couldn't find it so ironed over a towel on the kitchen counter - we've moved since then so god knows where it is) - so the idea of just getting the iron out for one thing seems enormously faffy haha.

Wrinkyclothes · 19/02/2023 20:34

I am curious though.... What am I missing with unironed bedding? I love climbing into a freshly made bed but didn't think it could get any better?!

I stopped ironing years ago when I realised the creases drop out after some body heat.
Its bad for you too it gives off a gas that can kill you.

Sunriseinwonderland · 19/02/2023 20:37

I iron everything. I work 6 days a week. Its my time to mindlessly do something without having to worry about finances, talking to anyone or thinking about anything. I need this time or I'd go nuts.

Cocobutt · 19/02/2023 20:37

YABU

I have a couple of tops that I absolutely love but they need to be ironed.

Fortunately, I don’t wear a suit for work but many people do and so they would iron more regularly.

Most clothes don’t need ironing but some definitely do and it looks awful when they aren’t.

Sunriseinwonderland · 19/02/2023 20:39

What I think of non ironers.........monsters.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 19/02/2023 20:40

I find other household jobs much worse than ironing. With ironing I can stand in front of the telly and do it.

Dis626 · 19/02/2023 20:41

I iron the clothes that we are wearing that day every morning. It literally takes a maximum of 5 minutes. I'm a lone parent and work full time so I most definitely don't have spare time on my hands, but I refuse to let us leave the house wearing creased up clothes

dudsville · 19/02/2023 20:42

I routinely iron! I wear 100% cotton. I love my clothes and tending to them. Maybe i have a lot of time on my hands (true!), it's also just something i like to do.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 19/02/2023 20:43

DP likes an ironing session - he evens irons the muslin cloths I use to take my make up off with, the big freak

I think they are probably those kind of people who think sitting down or relaxing is a sin. Skinny, nervy types who can't complete a thought.

How ridiculous to suggest, as crazy as me suggesting those who don't iron must be lard arses who slob about spending every minute on social media!

I iron weekly, am neither a skinny nervy type but do like my cotton bedding ironed, same as husband's work shirts and Irish linen tea towels (kills any bacteria not removed by washing)

Shake head....how does one wear linen or cotton garments in the summer without ironing them first?

Sierra259 · 19/02/2023 20:43

I iron certain things. My work uniform, eldest's school shirts (don't bother with youngest's polo shirts as they're under a pinafore anyway), school jumpers and any other clothes that look rumpled. Don't do towels or sheets. DH does his t-shirts, trousers and hoodies.

It's not a chore I particularly mind tbh. I watch TV or listen to music/audiobook while doing and it's quite relaxing. Would much rather iron than hoover!

Milky4 · 19/02/2023 20:44

What I find really odd is that, I grew up with a Mum who used to iron all our clothes every Sunday. She ironed everything.

And even as a kid / a young teenager - I was very clear - 'I'm not doing that'. In a world where everyone's mothers ironed everything, as their mothers did before them and so on - a whole generation popped up and jointly decided (with no conversation with each other) - 'fuck that, I'm not doing that', and now no one irons.

How / why - did that happen?! Haha.

Believe me, I am not a skinny nervy type and I don't particularly love ironing but I do appreciate the enjoyment I feel in the week when I put on ironed rather than scrumpled clothing, can put things away neatly in drawers etc.
And I do cheat slightly because I absolutely love/demand well ironed bedlinen. I realised a few years ago that I could forego most other household luxuries to outsource the sheets etc. However, I do not iron socks and pants, unlike my Mum!!

Milky4 · 19/02/2023 20:46

P.s I should say - no one I know, in my age group, irons - unless there's a very specific reason or something looks a bugger it's so creased. But I don't know anyone with an 'ironing basket'.
