To think people that routinely iron have far too much time on their hands?

Do people really still routinely iron their clothing?

The keyword being routinely. I am known to iron for events, or if I have a fussy top requiring attention or the kids need to look smart. But do people actually iron everything? Why??

I happily iron, always have done, bedding included because nothing beats getting into freshly ironed bedding.
It’s not interfering with anything or anyone else, my choice 😊
I listen to audiobooks or podcasts at the same time.
I’m retired now but I chose to do so even when I when I was working ridiculous hours because I preferred not to wear creased clothes (professional job requiring looking smart)

Wrinkyclothes · 19/02/2023 19:42

Nah. Not convinced. Surely routinely ironing is obsolete- most modern fabrics don't need it, hanging and air-drying keeps things looking fresh, they just crumpled as soon as you sweat in the car.
Obviously ironing or steaming the occasional linen or cotton piece is ok.
Personally I think iron producers are laughing all the way to the bank.

I think they are probably those kind of people who think sitting down or relaxing is a sin. Skinny, nervy types who can't complete a thought.

Rolling around the floor at this - in my case you couldn't be more wrong if you tried!!!! I'm definitely not skinny, definitely not nervy, and I spend more time relaxing than anyone I know. I still iron.

Iron or don't iron but don't kid yourself that nobody notices when you look creased & crumpled!
It's not a good look.

I challenge anyone to distinguish between ironed and unironed clothing once it's been worn for more than a few minutes. Either way, it will be a bit creased once you've been wearing it long enough to get out of the house and go anywhere, so why bother?

As for bedding, what do people mean by it needs ironing? Who cares?

3ormorecharacters · 19/02/2023 19:45

My mum irons everything including bedding, underwear, even hankies. I have so say it does make everything feel and smell lovely. I can't be doing with it though, as much as I'd love to. Maybe it's a generational thing.

Calistan · 19/02/2023 19:45

Why the fuck are we all squabbling over flat clothes FFS. Who the fuck cares.

mewkins · 19/02/2023 19:45

I used to iron (pre kids). An ironing board was a permanent fixture in my childhood dining room so I must have thought that everyone has to iron all clothes. Have a couple of cotton summer tops that need an iron but other than that I can go for months without lifting an iron.

Wrinkyclothes · 19/02/2023 19:46

I'm just concerned that the ironers out there don't realise that if they don't iron, things look ok, because they've never given not-ironing a chance.

It's literally an hour per week to look clean and tidy. I watch tv or listen to something.
I think it looks dirty and scruffy to wear creased or crumpled clothes, like you just couldn't be bothered and grabbed something off the floor.
It's always obvious when someone has just hung or tumbled clothes but not ironed them.

HeadNorth · 19/02/2023 19:47

I’ve never seen the point of ironing - who wants flat clothes? Our bodies aren’t flat.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 19/02/2023 19:48

I iron once a week, takes less than an hour. I iron our bedding, which is sublime when you get into it, then the odd shirt and t-shirt which need it.

I can't describe the difference getting into a freshly washed and ironed bed makes. It's even better when it's warm enough to dry on the line.

Deadringer · 19/02/2023 19:48

I iron every Sunday for maybe an hour, it's not the worst chore in the world. Mostly school uniforms, jeans and a few tops. No sheets or underwear or anything like that. I do it while dh cooks dinner so it works out well. He does his own shirts though as he is fussy about them.

NancyJoan · 19/02/2023 19:49

An hour or so on a Sunday, an hour of a period murder mystery usually.

I have clothes that look better without creases, as do my DC, so I iron them. (I never iron school uniform).

I don't like any of those modern fabrics, feel weird on my skin so I pretty much only wear cotton or linen which feel much nicer ironed (not fussed about how they look as the fresh ironed look doesn't last long anyway)

WellTidy · 19/02/2023 19:50

I don’t iron, but I think to have things that have been ironed, so I outsource it. It is absolutely lovely to have ironed bedding, I have a right strop if DH goes to bed before I do on the days when I’ve changed the beds.

But there are some things which I used to have ironed that I no longer bother with - pyjamas (I just shake and fold them when they come out of the dryer), DS14yo’s joggers and hoodies (dry on radiator as flat as possible) and fitted sheets (same as pyjamas).

Still ironed - all trousers and jeans that aren’t skinny, dresses that aren’t really thick jersey, shirts, finer knit jumpers, t-shirts/long sleeve tops, duvet covers and pillowcases and all school uniform.

In contrast, my mother still irons (amongst many other things) socks, tea towels and pants, and always has. She is 74.

Livedandlearned · 19/02/2023 19:50

I don't love ironing, but I love ironed clothes.

My uniform and my husband's work shirts look far better ironed, and so do the trousers that we wear.

Also, pillowcases look and feel better when ironed.

Cardamoney · 19/02/2023 19:50

Bizarrely the options aren’t iron everything or iron nothing! Some of us iron that which needs ironing and leave the rest.

Calistan · 19/02/2023 19:50

It's true that women will never gain equality because we all hate each other. Every single time I have described a problem with a bloke to another, they have defended them

This is an the absolute shit women occupy themselves with.

No fucking wonder younger women want to be men.

Bunce1 · 19/02/2023 19:50

We iron! We do it on a Sunday eve- the kids watch dragons den I iron our clothes, the kids thinks our cloth napkins. DH irons bedding and his work shirts.

I don’t iron every item of clothing but I’d say about 60% of our wardrobe is or ones. We are both in professional jobs that call for smart things a couple of times a week. I also think ironing and hanging clothes keeps them good for longer. My mum ironed everything- even pants! 😅

magicthree · 19/02/2023 19:51

I don't question other peoples' ironing habits, and I don't expect them to question mine. . .

This. Well said @mbosnz

Enko · 19/02/2023 19:51

I like my clothing ironed. For me that's more important than 1 hour on mumsnet or other relaxation. I can see when stuff is not ironed it's not the look I want.

I've no issue if you prefer it not that way. Personally I use my ironing time to listen to podcasts for my studies so it's time well spent.

However, I will say I find it very judgemental when I see posts going "people like that have too much time on their hands" no they do not. They have different priorities to you.. that's ok.

DownInTheDumpster · 19/02/2023 19:51

I find it weird when people iron everything on principle it just seems pointless. I hardly ever iron anything and never look creased! Just hang it to dry or fold out the tumbler. MIL takes a great deal of pride in ironing everything- if the kids stay one night she washes dries and irons all their clothes (sweet but also a slight power play). And she’s super morbidly obese so doesn’t fit the skinny nervous stereotype!

Sage396 · 19/02/2023 19:51

I only iron if I'm going to a special occasion like a wedding.

I can't even keep up with the laundry as it, there's no way I could add ironing into the mix. I just don't care enough.

BeckettandCastle · 19/02/2023 19:52

I don't iron other than in a blue moon. However DH does all our ironing every Sunday evening. To be fair the kids uniforms look shit if they haven't been ironed (all those non iron trousers are a lie - they do need to be ironed). My t shirts, teen dcs t shirts, work shirts etc all do need to be ironed & dh enjoys doing it (he says it's relaxing) so I leave him too it.

DuesToTheDirt · 19/02/2023 19:53

I just don't iron, except for special occasions.

I do have plenty of time, just don't want to spend it ironing. When I was growing up Saturday was wash day, and Saturday evening was spent ironing, which I sometimes got roped into. As a teenager I often thought of that Pretenders song

Oh, saturday night
Mmm, everyone's having fun
I'm down at the laundromat
Trying to get my washing done
Like I done before
Time and time again
Watching the clothes go 'round
Another week sees it's end

and I was sure there was more to Saturday nights than the bloody ironing!

My mum, on the other hand, when she got, felt sad that she couldn't manage the ironing any more... Getting old is sad of course, but not because of the ironing Confused.
