To think people that routinely iron have far too much time on their hands?

Do people really still routinely iron their clothing?

The keyword being routinely. I am known to iron for events, or if I have a fussy top requiring attention or the kids need to look smart. But do people actually iron everything? Why??

Yanbu, it is a very boring hobby imo.

Wrinkyclothes · 19/02/2023 19:04

Phew someone agrees. I find it a bit weird.

yanbu
for day to day I chose clothes specifically that don't need ironing.

lemonmama · 19/02/2023 19:04

Nope I don't iron mine or DS's clothes unless it's for a special occasion.
I might iron his school clothes once he starts in September if they need it.
I do have a tumble drier though so when I use that they come out nice.

touterustome · 19/02/2023 19:05

They're weird it's the only explanation

VladmirsPoutine · 19/02/2023 19:05

I iron on occasion but I have come across more than one person who finds ironing a good way to relieve anxiety. It's not so much the ironing that annoys me but the set up of the ironing board/iron - just seems a faff.

iloveyankeecandle · 19/02/2023 19:06

My mother in law irons everything. You can see how disgusted she is when she sees my kids in a slightly crumpled top!

avocadotofu · 19/02/2023 19:06

I absolutely agree! I never iron anything. My husband does iron his work shirts. I'm really careful about the fabrics I buy and how I dry them to avoid having to iron them.

wasacasa · 19/02/2023 19:06

My husband has to iron his work shirts. He would look ridiculous in non ironed shirts.
I iron any blouses I have that would look bad creased and we both iron the bedding for the household.

VenusClapTrap · 19/02/2023 19:06

I haven’t ironed since the dc were little and I had to iron those plastic bead creations. I can’t remember the last time I ironed an item of clothing. If you shake and hang things nicely to dry on a line or airer, things don’t crease.

user01082312345 · 19/02/2023 19:06

I never iron, and it annoys my mother that I don't even own an iron! What really irks me are people who iron their bed sheets - what is the point?? And seriously where do they find the time??

AliTheMinx · 19/02/2023 19:06

I iron every Sunday - for about an hour. It's not a huge chore and my son's uniform definitely needs a quick iron to look smart, as do my husband's work shirts. I only iron things that need ironing, of course - and I like ironed pillowcases. There are definitely worse tasks...

chelle0 · 19/02/2023 19:07

Yabu. I iron every Sunday morning. It's time for me to catch up on the programs I want to watch. I couldn't go out wearing something that wasn't ironed!!

Calistan · 19/02/2023 19:07

It's the people who iron sheets that confuse me most.

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 19/02/2023 19:07

I iron school shirts only. Once per week. That's routine. I have loads of things I'd rather do with my time but the shirts are so crumpled when out of the washing machine.

Thankfully DS, DD and DH all share the task with me.

I also iron (routinely) my silk pillowcase. That's a wee luxury for me.

IScreamMonday · 19/02/2023 19:08

I don't iron but we would all look nicer if someone did it.

I don't believe it's about too much / not enough time. It's just what you prioritise. If I have time to Mumsnet, I have to iron. I could iron while watching the film I've planned this evening but I don't want to 🤷‍♀️

Gwen82 · 19/02/2023 19:08

Says the person starting a thread on ironing in order to discuss and debate 😂

Pinksalty · 19/02/2023 19:09

I iron all the clothes - myself and 2 children.
once a load comes off the airer or washing line, I put up the ironing board and get it done. Doesn’t take long!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/02/2023 19:09

It takes me a couple of hours each week, normally at times when I’m catching up with something I would watch on TV anyway. I think unless you never watch TV or listen to the radio, you have time to do ironing if you want to do it. If you don’t want to do it, fair enough - but why sneer at those of us who do? Why does it matter to you if there are people who iron their clothes?

Calistan · 19/02/2023 19:09

I think they are probably those kind of people who think sitting down or relaxing is a sin. Skinny, nervy types who can't complete a thought.

LucyLeave · 19/02/2023 19:10

I don't iron anything. DH occasionally irons his work stuff.

declutteringmymind · 19/02/2023 19:10

I iron. I love crisp lines in shirts and trousers, and I wear a lot of cotton and linen so definitely needs ironing. It's not a chore really 30 mins twice a week.

I don't restrict myself or the family to things that don't need ironing and don't iron sheets etc.

wasacasa · 19/02/2023 19:10

We iron our sheets/bedding. I iron them with a quick run over of the iron but my husband enjoys ironing them properly :)
They would be very creased if we didn’t so look better and more comfortable after an iron. I don’t enjoy ironing but my husband does.

I iron my bedding, because I deserve to sleep in ironed bedding. I am so worth it.

Oblomov23 · 19/02/2023 19:11

Yes I iron, Dh's work shirts, ds's school shirts. Takes 10 or 15 minutes on a Sunday. Most weeks. Does this bother you? Yes I have loads and loads of free time. Always have done. Does that bother you. I have many hours free time most days. Ds's older need less, I sit and do nothing, watch tv with Dh, mn tonnes, batch cook, see friends for curry and wine, have a bath. I'm extremely organised and have lots of free time. Why does it bother you that I choose to spend a few minutes ironing?
