To think people that routinely iron have far too much time on their hands?

Do people really still routinely iron their clothing?

The keyword being routinely. I am known to iron for events, or if I have a fussy top requiring attention or the kids need to look smart. But do people actually iron everything? Why??

I only iron my clothes but it's my time to myself that I enjoy. I do the ironing in the bathroom, with no one bothering me, and it's relaxing. Was always my favourite chore as a teenager too.

MarshaMelrose · 19/02/2023 19:32

Was the steamer effective, @Calistan ? If you had one, would you use it more than the iron?

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 19/02/2023 19:33

"Bedding is much nicer to get into when it's ironed than when it's not".
Absolutely agree.
I'm a ninja ironer. For sheets, I just fold them small, then flatten them with all my weight bearing through the iron, so it's all done in jig time.
You do you though.

OoooohMatron · 19/02/2023 19:33

I hate ironing but I don't like my kids or myself looking scruffy so I iron as required. I'm not sure when it became a thing to judge people who have a few standards 🤔

WTAF? Imagine this from the opposite perspective.
'People that don't iron are overweight types who are too lazy to get off their arses & actually do something.'
How bloody rude & stupid.

People actually do think that though!

mbosnz · 19/02/2023 19:33

I iron for my partner, and for my kids. Of course, he's equally able to iron, and will iron for us as well. . .

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 19/02/2023 19:34

Pinksalty · 19/02/2023 19:09

I iron all the clothes - myself and 2 children.
once a load comes off the airer or washing line, I put up the ironing board and get it done. Doesn’t take long!

Same here and there's 9 of us but if you keep on top of washing and ironing it's not a huge job, I couldn't do it once a week it would be too much.

JMSA · 19/02/2023 19:35

You could say the same about anything.
People who jog have too much time on their hands. People who cook elaborate meals/indulge complicated bedtimes with their kids/change their bedding weekly/watch TV.
I don't iron everything, far from it (and as for bedding, no way!). But I'd much rather iron something than look like a dog's dinner in it. Nor would I ever have sent my kids to school in crumpled clothing.

I occasionally iron. I'm more interested in those who iron for their partners? Is there a reason they can't iron their own shirts?

My husband is in the military. On the rare occasions we're getting dressed up / going out / need to look the part, he's been known to ask me to iron his shirt. I remind him that one does not get a do and bark oneself and redirect him to the iron.

I think I've ironed maybe 6 dresses in the last 8 years. All for weddings or funerals. Most things, if taken straight out the washing machine, shaken out and hung up properly are perfectly sufficient for the kind of work I do.

EyesOnThePies · 19/02/2023 19:36

YABU.

They have same amount of time on their hands but are not as lazy as me and have higher standards.

They iron while watching Casualty. Instead of kicking back with the wine and a packet of Twirl Bites.

So they are probably healthier. And deserve their crisp smooth sheets.

OR, they do give it large with the wine and Twirl Bites but can afford someone to iron for them.

MrNorrell · 19/02/2023 19:37

I'll iron stuff for work and a couple of other items which need doing. It takes me about 20 minutes a week and I prefer it to lots of other household related stuff. I don't think I have an excessive amount of time on my hands any more than anyone else who spends 20 minutes a week doing something non-essential.

TeenLifeMum · 19/02/2023 19:37

My mum irons pillow cases and tea towels. She’s insane. I iron 3-4 times a year. Usually for a wedding or my linen dress in the summer.

LivingOnTheVeg · 19/02/2023 19:37

I iron everything, even the bedsheets. 😁 I find it quite relaxing but I am NT so fully prepared to admit I’m the odd one out. DP puts the ironing board up though as those 10 seconds are the shite bit.

LivingOnTheVeg · 19/02/2023 19:37

Not NT that should say!

anybloodyname · 19/02/2023 19:38

I'm a nurse so have to iron my uniforms

Occasional tops but rarely

That's it

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/02/2023 19:38

I make my own clothes and pressing (different from ironing) is an essential part of that. I love fabric, though, and once the clothes are made I like to see the threads in the fabric lying as they should do. The fabric also feels all wrong to me if not ironed. I don't find it a chore and enjoy ironing while watching TV. My husband also irons especially his uniforms which I dont like doing.

mbosnz · 19/02/2023 19:40

I'm so efficient I find time to both iron, and kick back with a wine!

magicthree · 19/02/2023 19:40

I prefer to wear clothes which are ironed, I wear mostly natural fabrics which tend to need ironing more. I would choose ironing any day over any other form of housework.

As for too much time on my hands - I could say the same about the competitive clothes washing, cleaning, and hygiene obsessed MNers!

LoobyDop · 19/02/2023 19:41

I don’t like synthetic fabrics, tumble dryers or looking like shit, so I iron. An hour in front of the telly is hardly a big deal. I don’t do anyone else’s, though, not a chance. But I avoided that being an issue by marrying an adult with standards rather than a man-baby with double standards.

TroysMammy · 19/02/2023 19:42

My sister would only iron her husband's shirt collar and would tell him to keep his jumper on when he went to work.

I only iron blouses with frills or ribbon and material for craft. I love my polyester hang up to dry and put on workwear.

namechangeforthisbleep · 19/02/2023 19:42

My mate Ito s her PJs then puts them on. Baffling

Mythicalcreatures · 19/02/2023 19:42

I iron on a Sunday, my dc's clothes and mine, dp can do his own if he wants and I certainly dont iron everything, it only takes about 45 mins and I listen to music, it's not the worst chore

BobbaMom · 19/02/2023 19:42

I iron. I don't mind the actual ironing, it's the putting away I can't stand. I put something on the TV and off I go. I can legitimately tell the kids they need to leave me alone because the iron is hot and very dangerous 😂! My youngest has SEN and I'm really conscious that they look tidy and well put together. Stupid I know!
