To think it is time to extend Sunday opening hours?

It really is time for the restrictive Sunday trading hours to be lifted. The archaic laws have not kept up with modern society.

Sunday may traditionally have been a family day but there have been a lot of changes since then. People are in increasingly different family set ups. The working hours have changed for a lot of people and being able to shop on a Sunday morning would improve things greatly. It would help trade for businesses too.

Sunday is now a major shopping day and the hours need to reflect this.

@Sundayopeningplease given that you've been since 9.30 this morning, without a break, I'm not sure why you couldn't have gone out and done a shop in that time, in the 15 shops you need to visit.

I'll vote tomorrow when I'm not on the app, that'll help.

ImAvingOops · 19/02/2023 17:53

I think all retail workers should be given 2 consecutive days off, but these don't need to be on a Sunday. There are loads of people who wouldn't mind working a weekend and getting 2 quieter days off on the week when all the kids are at school!
Short Sunday hours are way out of date. Staff shouldn't be forced to work every weekend but we are past the days of enforced shut downs. If individuals want a quiet week, they can have one - it's wrong to impose it on the rest of us though

It's now gone up to 53% not agreeing with you 😏😂

Yanbu. The high Street needs all the help it can get. Amazon trade 24/7, there shouldn't be any restrictions on when shops can open.

So you honestly think that people would go to the high street at 8pm on a Sunday and that would stop them shopping on Amazon? 🤔 I don't think so 😂

Yes it is soooo easy to go and shop with a terminally ill person who is immobile 🙄

Agree 100%. Amazon have moved with the times.

@Sundayopeningplease but it's easier on a Sunday after 5, because?

StatisticallyLow · 19/02/2023 18:13

@IndiaDreamer no sorry I wasn't suggesting that, I meant that retailers should be allowed to choose when they open rather than being restricted. The high street has restrictions which don't apply to Amazon etc.

Agree.

Some people enjoy a quiet Sunday and that is fine but they don’t seem to accept that everyone wants that. Or this family time forgetting not everyone has a family or kids.

If I Was doing that today I certainly be be wasting my time on this thread all day. I would actually be caring for them

Why on earth would you go shopping on a Sunday? So many other things to do! (and no I don't mean churchy stuff)

I love that Sunday mornings are quiet on the roads.

Well you obviously aren't doing a good job caring for them. When I'm caring for vulnerable people Mumsnet is not even my radar for the day.

ToastToastTea · 19/02/2023 18:19

I would prefer shops to be closed on sunday!
There is more than enough time to shop.

Plumbear2 · 19/02/2023 18:19

Never mind the entire day

Well you it's blinking obvious. If you where really caring for someone as vulnerable able as you say you certainly wouldn't be on Mumsnet for the entire day. When I'm doing it I barely have time to eat my own lunch

What does supermarkets being open have to do with family time?

Exactly. Family time keeps being mentioned like everyone has the same set up in life.

Absolutely not. I’m sick and tired of the 24/7 society we’ve become. There’s enough consuming and shopping 6 days of the week, we need downtime.

It's taking family time away from retail workers.

I love that Sunday mornings are quiet on the roads.

Because work and family commitments means I usually can’t go for my big shop other days of the week. And online does not always suit me. And because not everyone sees Sundays the same as you do.

Sundayopeningplease · 19/02/2023 18:32

So you never go to the cinema, pub, restaurants, cafes etc on Sundays?

Or is that a different kind of consuming? Nobody calls for them to be closed on Sundays.
