To think it is time to extend Sunday opening hours?

It really is time for the restrictive Sunday trading hours to be lifted. The archaic laws have not kept up with modern society.

Sunday may traditionally have been a family day but there have been a lot of changes since then. People are in increasingly different family set ups. The working hours have changed for a lot of people and being able to shop on a Sunday morning would improve things greatly. It would help trade for businesses too.

Sunday is now a major shopping day and the hours need to reflect this.

@Sundayopeningplease @JennyDarlingRIP the reason they didn't go back to 24 hour would be because they realised it wasn't cost effective. 🤷

Plumbear2 · 19/02/2023 16:51

Sundayopeningplease · 19/02/2023 16:41

There is only 4% difference and the poll could well change so it is narrow minded to take that as a fact.

Just because I have spent a lot of today on this thread does not mean I could have been out shopping. That is a pretty stupid assumption to make. You do understand that you can be at home caring for someone but you can’t leave them right? Amazingly it is possible to use the internet at the same time!!

I never said I am the only person shopping for vulnerable people. Lots of others want extended opening hours for different reasons.

Yes I do know what's it's like looking after vulnerable people and that you carnt leave them. But I still carnt believe the only time you can go shopping is before 10 am on Sunday and after4pm on Sunday.

For you yes and that’s fine. You don’t get to decide for everyone else. Significant number of people want reform.

A lot of my local shops are not even open on a Sunday.

I am getting confused as to whether this is for your or the people you support. Maybe you should move.

JennyDarlingRIP · 19/02/2023 16:52

@IndiaDreamer I have two relatives currently facing redundancy while their employer Tesco makes huge profits, by cutting opening hours and staffing and increasing self service. Not everything is about my convenience

woodhill · 19/02/2023 16:47

Sorry you are finding the juggling of caring and working very difficult but what do the people you care for do when you are working and isn't there anyone else who could do shopping for them?

Thank you for your compassion.

Occasionally a friend helps but he has his own 90 year old mother to care for so I can only ask rarely and often times the answer is no understandably.

There is likely not enough staff for this, or they'd be opening 24 hours as was the fashion a little while ago. It wasn't popular enough then and it definitely won't make economic sense now. Why don't you plan around ordering online?

Plumbear2 · 19/02/2023 16:53

Exactly this. They carnt run their business at a loss to suit every single persons individual circumstances. They close for a few hours on a Sunday. You know the times so work around that.

It is for the people I support. I can fit my shopping into existing hours.

The answer is not moving because I can’t take the people I support with me. They have complex medical needs.

unrsnblyannoyd · 19/02/2023 16:55

And this is why people can't slow down and take a moment. Six days a week the shops are open. Don't penalise the workers for your lack of planning.

Why don't you do their shopping at the same time as your own?

JennyDarlingRIP · 19/02/2023 16:57

@Plumbear2 supermarkets are far from running at a loss, my family member has worked nights there for over thirty years and is now facing redundancy because they are reducing staffing , one of the first things they did was stop opening over night having done it for Covid. But sure more profit for Tesco comes first.

If you understand so much then you wouldn’t ask this. You say you understand what it is like to care for someone vulnerable then make a silly comment saying I could have been out shopping today with the time I have spent on this thread. Do you understand that I cannot be out shopping and caring for someone? But I can care and post on this thread at the same time?

Did I say they are the only times I can shop?

Lots of people want extended opening hours for different reasons. It is not just because they only want to shop before 10am and after 4pm.

Because not all the shops I need to go to for them are the same as the ones where I do my shopping. The shopping requirements for an elderly terminally ill person are very different to mine.

OP posts:
Plumbear2 · 19/02/2023 16:59

So you admitt you can shop at other times. Do why are you making such a song and dance about this?

JennyDarlingRIP · 19/02/2023 17:00

I'll be at the gym tomorrow at 7, I will work 9-9 and then do my food shop as DH has had the car today to work and we had a family event yesterday. I can't do a weekly family shop traveling on two buses with a 4 year old. I don't live rurally but that is the journey I'd have to make the alternative is one bus to Waitrose which I can't afford in terms of a weekly shop.
The rest of the shops here shut at 5/5:30 during the week, so if you work you only have the weekends. I could shop online but then what happens to retail staff?

gogohmm · 19/02/2023 17:00

I think 6 hours is a nice balance - shops can choose which 6 already, we have 3 supermarkets that are 10-4, one that is 10.30-4.30 and one that is 11-5 in town, the 2 coops and Tesco express aren't subject to the law anyway

Sundayopeningplease · 19/02/2023 17:00

I am pretty sure you have been to the cinema, pub, restaurants or cafes on a Sunday at some point. Don’t penalise the workers because you want to go out.

@eighteenthirteen1

What about the rest of us who would prefer shops opened 12-6!

Not everyone has antisocial hours children. Mine rarely were up before 9 on Sundays even as toddlers anyway, more commonly 10am. Never have understood why people let their kids get up so early

But we are talking about supermarkets. I'm sure the other shops you are talking about don't open as often as supermarkets do. Surely you should be asking for the specialists shops you mention to open for longer not supermarkets.

@Sundayopeningplease and lots aren't, in fact the majority aren't, so I think that probably settles it?

If it's a vote....

It's whoever voted more that gets their way, it doesn't matter that the other votes "were close".

A but like brexit? Remember how that worked?

Does it settle it because the poll has ended? People are still voting.

You clearly don’t understand how Brexit worked. Maybe go revisit how voting works.
