To think it is time to extend Sunday opening hours?

It really is time for the restrictive Sunday trading hours to be lifted. The archaic laws have not kept up with modern society.

Sunday may traditionally have been a family day but there have been a lot of changes since then. People are in increasingly different family set ups. The working hours have changed for a lot of people and being able to shop on a Sunday morning would improve things greatly. It would help trade for businesses too.

Sunday is now a major shopping day and the hours need to reflect this.

Bloody hell OP. So many posters have made suggestions about how to make the shopping easier but you've dismissed every one. You obviously just want a moan, not practical advice.

Needmorelego · 19/02/2023 18:34

@Untrainedmelody you can have downtime any time you want but not everybody else will be able to have or will want exactly the same downtime as you. If you want downtime on a Sunday - go for it.
People have different lives and different things going on.

Plumbear2 · 19/02/2023 18:35

You may aswell quit. Your story is unravelling and has so many holes in it. You carnt shop during normal hours today due to caring for someone very vulnerable, but you can spend all day on Mumsnet responding to every answer you disagree with. This just wouldn't be possible if you really where doing what you say you are doing. So again, why exactly didn't you do your supposed shopping in the 6 hours you could have done it today.

Untrainedmelody · 19/02/2023 18:28

Absolutely not. I’m sick and tired of the 24/7 society we’ve become. There’s enough consuming and shopping 6 days of the week, we need downtime.

You can take your downtime whenever you want!

retail staff are already working Sundays. What else do you think they can fit in to their day, if for example they are working 11 to 5? Maybe it would suit their Sunday better to work 9 to 3 so they can have family dinner or go for afternoon pints. Or work 1 to 7 so they can make their child’s football match or play their own before work.

Doublethetroubletwicethefun · 19/02/2023 18:36

Working in the retail industry, I completely disagree. Sunday is a day of rest for some and a short shift for others. My partner always has weekends off so if I’m working a Sunday, I’m still able to spend my mornings with him and my children and I get to see them before they go to bed.

Most people get at least 2 days a week off - if one of those is Sunday and you want a full day of shopping or doing something that requires longer than 10-4/5, I’d just plan it for the other day off.

People seem to think everyone else wants downtime on a Sunday because that is what they like.

As a retail worker, working Sunday is great.

I get a much more useful day off during the week, meaning I can deal with things that need to be dealt with during office hours. I can go shopping when the shops are quieter. I can take advantage of cheaper ticket prices for the cinema and weekday lunch deals.

Honestly, I recommend Sunday working.

Sundayopeningplease · 19/02/2023 18:41

Flounder2022 · 19/02/2023 18:31

Because work and family commitments means I usually can’t go for my big shop other days of the week. And online does not always suit me. And because not everyone sees Sundays the same as you do.

This is what people don’t seem to understand.

People keep banging on about shopping online forgetting that not everybody can afford to do this and shock horror not everything is available online.

It doesn't have to be Sunday but for the majority of the population Sunday does make sense (family day traditionally, still church day for religious people, weekend day for 9-5 workers).

These modern conveniences have become a cancer of society. Everything must be accessible, immediately, all the time.

If you can't manage to get what you need in the 6 days shops are open all day long, you probably don't need it that urgently!

IndiaDreamer · 19/02/2023 18:41

@CrappyJob but lots is available on line at no extra cost!

Fizbosshoes · 19/02/2023 18:42

I haven't read the full thread but I'm not sure why people are using Amazon as a shining example of how shops should operate. They aren't exactly known for being a staff-friendly place to work!

I know people who love working Sundays. Not everyone wants to spend it with family sitting at home or even has a family.

For me when I was working on retail, it meant that I couldn't have a day with my children.

Bloody awful!

They already are in Scotland ☺️

Lucky folk in Scotland. Hopefully England will catch on soon!

Not to mention the impact on the environment :(

People are so selfish they would rather have crap they don't need 24/7 available than be mindful or intentional as consumers.

It's just really depressing.

IndiaDreamer · 19/02/2023 18:44

@Sundayopeningplease but they won't be sitting at home, they'll be in pubs, restaurants, soft play etc as you've pointed out so may times..

IndiaDreamer · 19/02/2023 18:46

@CrappyJob food, groceries, perishables, fruit, veg, laundry items, would you like me to continue, or have you got the general gist?

Then it probably isn't the right role/hours for you at that point in your life. That doesn't mean nobody should be able to do it!

Eh?

How can you not be physically able to get shopping in the other 6 days a week? Genuinely?

We should force people to work all kinds of hours to benefit the few entitled, unorganized people who can't function without ultimate convenience? Come on don't be ridiculous

IndiaDreamer · 19/02/2023 18:47

@CrappyJob it certainly was the right thing, but extended Sunday hours would've been awful!

I loved finishing at 4 and coming home to my DH and DSs

IndiaDreamer · 19/02/2023 18:48

@AnnoyedFromSlough it didn't, which is why I didn't tag you?

What an odd post by you'

You are talking to me like I'm an idiot - but this doesn't seem relevant to my having a day off during the week?
