To think it is time to extend Sunday opening hours?

It really is time for the restrictive Sunday trading hours to be lifted. The archaic laws have not kept up with modern society.

Sunday may traditionally have been a family day but there have been a lot of changes since then. People are in increasingly different family set ups. The working hours have changed for a lot of people and being able to shop on a Sunday morning would improve things greatly. It would help trade for businesses too.

Sunday is now a major shopping day and the hours need to reflect this.

Am I? Lots of other people are in favour too judging from the poll.

You are bonkers for not seeing that 😡

It's a few hours on a Sunday. Every other time it's open. I also have caring responsibilities but still manage to shop at all the other times. Honestly it's a few short hours on a Sunday.

@Sundayopeningplease and shops are open 24 hours Mon - Sat so it had changed, so your argument about no electricity is irrelevant.

All shops are open 24 hours Mon -Sat? Not in my area.

So because you can, everyone else should too?

@Sundayopeningplease not all obviously!

But here's an idea for you.....

Do what shopping you can online, you must be able to do a good majority like that, then you'll have lots more time to get the few bits you do need during the large amount of hours the shops are open. Simple.

IndiaDreamer · 19/02/2023 16:12

@Sundayopeningplease in fairness it is rather odd that the only few hours the shops are open are the hours you want to go.

Questioningtoday · 19/02/2023 16:15

Not being in the UK, can so can I ask, is retail (all retail) only allowed open for a few hours on a Sunday? How many? Is it absolute or do 24 hour supermarkets stay open? Are smaller shops open longer hours (eg Tesco express) and shopping centres?

IndiaDreamer · 19/02/2023 16:15

*are not open

Large shops are open 6 hours on a Sunday, all convenience, Sainsburys locals, Tesco Express etc are open for the majority of the day, maybe 6-10.

So you expect retail workers to work just to suit you. 52 % disagree with you.

Thanks for the tip!

But I am shopping for several people who don’t buy enough to make it worthwhile for online shopping. Items are needed from upto 5-6 different ships. Can’t get everything from one place. Also I can’t order from the cheaper shops online.

Wonderful if you have enough wealth, but not everyone does. So not quite so simple.

@Sundayopeningplease oh well that's unfortunate, you'll have to just keep campaigning for longer Sunday hours, good luck with that!

Might be odd for you but life is not predictable and can be restrictive when you have caring responsibilities for someone who is terminally ill. Respite is rarely available.

Given how dead shops are mid week day times, because more people still work weekdays than not, it seems a bit odd to then close early on Sundays, close Wednesday and do 9-5 on Sundays

Our supermarkets never went back to 24 hours after Covid

Also currently Tesco are making redundancies even though they are making increasing levels of profit, they are doing this by opening shorter hours, self service and getting rid of all of the specialist counters, butchery, fishmonger etc. Jobs in retail keep some areas afloat

But it proves more people think they shouldn't increase the hours. Instead of spending all day on this thread you could have been out doing the shopping. So you carnt shop before 10am or after 4pm on Sundays. Are these really the only times you can shop because I highly doubt it. You are not the only person shopping for vulnerable people, In know what it's like I know for a fact early cl of sing on Sunday makes zero difference

thanks. That is quite restrictive. Most of the big supermarkets are open 8am to 10pm. The suburban shopppng centres usually 10am to 7pm. City centre retail usually a bit shorter 11/12 till 6 or 7pm.

There is only 4% difference and the poll could well change so it is narrow minded to take that as a fact.

Just because I have spent a lot of today on this thread does not mean I could have been out shopping. That is a pretty stupid assumption to make. You do understand that you can be at home caring for someone but you can’t leave them right? Amazingly it is possible to use the internet at the same time!!

I never said I am the only person shopping for vulnerable people. Lots of others want extended opening hours for different reasons.

No 6 full days is enough. There are local shops for anything else.

For you yes and that’s fine. You don’t get to decide for everyone else. Significant number of people want reform.

A lot of my local shops are not even open on a Sunday.

Sorry you are finding the juggling of caring and working very difficult but what do the people you care for do when you are working and isn't there anyone else who could do shopping for them?

Can’t expect a terminally ill person to streamline their system to need things in an organised manner 🙄 things can change in the matter of minutes.

Such ignorance.

No but I can expect you, their helper ,to prevent them from running out of things precisely because things can change very quickly. We can go backwards and forwards all day but nothing you have offered justifies longer trading hours on a Sunday.
