Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

@LuckySantangelo35 when you say many of us......who do you actually mean?

@IndiaDreamer

errr well me and Op and plenty of other posters on this thread would be irritated by a dog jumping up and leaving mud over us.

have you not read the thread?

You could become aggressive and upset the person. They’ll then feel on edge and not want to make eye contact or be pleasant to anyone, upsetting everyone that walks past and before you know it everyone’s being hostile.

You can’t expect excited dogs to be kept on leads in a park - they have far more right to be there than you do.

@RemoteControlDoobry

err no they don’t

dogs do not have more rights that people

Are you ok? surely you must know that?

Dogs don't have more right than people to be in a park. Don't be soft. Dogs should be expected to have recall. If they don't then they need a training line or an enclosed field.

I am a dog owner whose dog walks off lead for all of his walks.

Choconut · 18/02/2023 19:14

I'm a dog walker but this would piss me off, if I see any people around and I have a jumpy dog I would always put them straight on the lead. Dogs needs to run around off lead but you need to either teach them not to jump up, take them somewhere with no people or watch them like a hawk in case someone comes along. The problem is owners think it's cute to have their dog jump all over them when they're a puppy and they encourage it, and then the behaviour sticks.

Imagine having a pet llama in your living room just like a dog.

Sakes alive, can you imagine the threads on here if someone got savaged hoofed by a pet llama in the park?

It'd be like the Sistine Chapel on acid.

Thanks for making me laugh out loud there, I am in stitches!

Blip · 18/02/2023 19:15

@RemoteControlDoobry ok so I. Any object to someone's out of control dog jumping on me in case I upset them? And then if they are upset they may upset someone else? And that will be on me??? Are you on crack?

God help you if you ever have a real problem in life, you sound ridiculous.

Ah, are you one of those unimaginative people who think that just because someone posts about something relatively trivial, that means that’s the only issue in their life?

If so, I am sorry you are so concrete of thinking.

WTF. The excited ones I the ones I expect to be on a lead and what’s this about them having more right to be there? That’ll be the parks paid for by humans, with big signs up warning about fines for leaving dog poo, will it? Sure thing, Fido.

Not really. Parks are for young and old people too

Hellosunnysun8 · 18/02/2023 19:17

Gosh op you sound angry. I think there’s probably more stuff going on for you right now that just being bothered by a non-aggressive but irritating dog.

If it happened to me, it might be mildly annoying at the time, but then I’d forget it ever happened.

Butchyrestingface · 18/02/2023 19:18

WiIson · 18/02/2023 19:10

I didn't say I was tempted. Although, speaking to some of you feckless dog owners, well...

Just pointing out that dog owners, like yourself, really don't like their dogs being fed by strangers

After all, you don't know what they're giving them do you.

A sensible dog owner would keep their dog under control to avoid this happening.

Rather than flying into a frenzied rage at an online poster and carrying on letting their dog run free to do what it wants.

Maybe you don't love your dogs as much as you say you do.

I don't have a pet dog, I have already stated this. You seem to be assuming that anyone isn't apoplectic with rage at the situation described owns feral dogs running around jumping up on people. I am dog free.

I just don't care that much beyond mild annoyance about a muddy dog jumping on me. It happens rarely and when it does, I chalk it up to one of life's irritations. I can certainly understand mild irritation. If the person is genuinely scared of dogs, of course, that is different.

There are far too many dogs and not enough responsible and sane owners.

Dogs should be working animals. They are not suited to living in a house with a small backyard. Then they have to be taken out to a park where people without dogs have to tolerate them day in day out, hundreds of them everywhere, all over the place. Cities and suburbs were not made for pets. Imagine having a pet llama in your living room just like a dog. It's gone crazy now, and the owners are just as batty as their dogs. The adoration of the doggy is the new religion.

Remember kennels? Outside. Where dogs used to sleep before they were allowed to be on sofas, beds and in cafes?!

I have a dog but she’s too small to jump up on people so I don’t have this issue (with her). However I do get other people’s dogs jumping up on me. I shrug it off. At the end of the day even a well trained dog will still have its own mind. Vast majority of the dogs we see out walking are not trained 24/7, like police dogs, so they will do as they please from time to time. If you’re that precious don’t dress up for the park! You have a child so surely you don’t expect to stay pristine all the time.

I think the world is divided into two halves, those who absolutely do mind others making their clothes muddy and those who claim that they do not mind.

I'll need to start going to my nearest Nero's. As I have said, I have no dog myself, but like talking to other people's.

My child is an adult.
I do expect to stay clean and mud free all day as this is my everyday experience. This seems normal to me and in no way precious.
Do you expect to be dirty and smelly everyday??

Dogs should be working animals
Although their career choices are somewhat limited due to not having opposable thumbs. I know a poodle who, when not sniffing turds and dragging his bum across the carpet, has a successful side hustle as a hedge fund manager. So that's an option. And there's always politics.
