Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

Some people are so bloody joyless - it's a little bit of mud off a dogs paw, it's a natural substance from the earth, god forbid we come into contact with anything beyond the realm of endless shopping, concrete pavements and cheap polyester.

It's not joyless to not want a dog to jump up at you.

I've been knocked over twice in recent years. I'm very comfortable with dogs but there isn't much you can do when an excited dogs runs into your legs. I didn't hurt myself but I easily could have and had I been older or inform I could have easily been injured.
I don't mind some of my cloths getting muddy but I've lots of clothes where I don't want to have to wash them. Coats are often a pain to clean.
Anyone that thinks it's ok to let dogs jump up at strangers is really stupid and selfish. I guess they don't care if their dog injures someone if they are knocked to the ground.

What an odd post @FallSpringing! So walking through a park to work, minding my own business now makes me a joyless airhead? Wow! I never knew that!

I've never had children with sticky fingers molesting me at random! On the other hand dogs leaping up, sniffing crotches or snapping at one is a routine hazard of a country walk. Keep dogs on a lead in public places. If you haven't got a large garden or paddock for your dog to run loose maybe don't have a canine companion!

I don't need to keep my well trained, obedient dog on a lead. So I'm good thanks 👍

I’m “one of those” too. My dog has zero interest in random human beings. She’d trot past you without even looking at you.

MuchHatred · 21/02/2023 10:15

Dog haters are mentalists. Taser them! Kick them to death! Poison them! Put them to sleep as they were previously mistreated! Beat up the owners!

You'd all be a lot happier if you had a dog in your life.

AnnoyedFromSlough · 21/02/2023 10:25

I would make a fuss over the dog and tell the owner it wasn't an issue.

Oh ffs. You're one of those that think they know what they're talking about when they don't. No I don't. Hth 🙂

Mothership4two · 21/02/2023 10:30

I do walk my dog off the lead in local dog walking areas but she is trained not to jump up, has good recall and frankly is completely disinterested in other people. I have occasionally been jumped up on by other dogs and sometimes they left mud marks and the owners have been apologetic but, as I have been wearing my dog walking clothes, it's not been a massive issue (although annoying). However if I had been wearing 'normal' clothes, like the OP, I would have been mightily p*d off and would have said so

Ah yes, the old 'you are joyless for not seeing some random poorly trained muddy dog jumping up on you as a positive encounter' gambit. Always works well.

NattyNatashia · 21/02/2023 11:27

While there are lots of responsible dog owners it never ceases to amaze me about how inconsiderate some owners are. Just because they love their dogs they seem to assume others to do. It's not always just about muddy trousers, I'm very allergic to dogs and get very anxious if they approach me out of control.

Mothership4two · 21/02/2023 12:22

And it's just blooming annoying @NattyNatashia even for dog lovers especially if you have ensured that your own are trained not to do that. It would be quite possible for a dog to react aggressively if their owner was being jumped up on.

Must be horrible with allergies and anxiety

Please don’t. From someone who is allergic you are just exacerbating the problem. How can dog owners train if the dog is rewarded when it jumps. It doesn’t do anyone any favours.

I see very little dog hate on these sort of threads. It’s judgment of the owners, not the dogs.

Herroyal · 22/02/2023 08:28

Nothing. I wouldn't consider it the end of the world.
What you could do is engage with the dog - as it put your hand out and say no, or down if you think they might try to jump up for your attention.
Occasionally I see a dog bounding towards me and I know they might be about to bounce up I loudly tell them to stay down, get down, no or whatever. It works.

In a perfect world no dog would jump up for attention but even usually well behaved ones do occasionally when they're excited, usually young ones.

@MuchHatred

cleaning up it’s shit and having it make my house stink ? Nah, I don’t think I would be much happier with a dog in my life

Definitely this. Irresponsible selfish dog owners are the problem.

having a random dog come jump at you and muddy your clothes brings you joy?! Really?! You wanna get out more!!

takes all sorts….

I’d be irritated .. similar happened to me walking in the summer in really nice summer denim dress (clean on as well!) and dog came up with a really wet mouth lots of dribble and spit and rubbed it over front of my dress - the owner didn’t apologise and I was left with a load of smelly wet dog dribble on my dress - yuk yuk - dog owners should be able to call their dogs back .. we used to have a dog and there’s no way our dog was allowed to jump up at people

Maybe the owners should be on leads until they learn how to behave in public 👍

Well clearly KateRose should have anticipated said wet dog before she left the house and put on something 'scruffy' instead, or failing that not embark on any kind of walks at all. Anyway, it's only a bit of mud, it's not like someone died as a result. I wish people would stop being so uptight about friendly dogs.

Nope. And the law doesn't support it. All dogs should be under control. That does not mean leashed. I am not leashing my dog where I don't need to.
