Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

Blip · 18/02/2023 11:36

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

I don’t know why people are saying ‘what if’ it was a toddler. It wasn’t. OP’s thread is about dogs. If it was about toddlers she would have said wouldn’t she?!

also, toddlers and dogs are not one and the same so why compare? For one thing, toddlers are infinitely more important than dogs. You know…on account of toddlers being people and dogs being dogs.

I hope that’s helped some posters! 😊

We all got to know YOUR innermost thoughts about being tempted to poison dogs though.

But yes, poor you. Zzzzz.

No, sorry, it's all out there now.

Try and backtrack all you like. With all your thigh rubbing.

So grim.

Pfeiffle · 18/02/2023 18:56

Yes it’s happened a few times, one in particular was a problem because the dog’s claws left bruises - the dog was overexcited and came over at high speed. The nonchalance of the owners is something else. The owners also assume that you’re not allergic or terrified of their dog. If a dog is excitable and has poor recall, put it on a lead when there’s other people around. It’s tempting to go bounding over to the owner and jump up at them.

Yep, it's out there that you admit to being tempted to poison dogs that annoy you.

I know. I read it.

Lots of people who own dogs are absolutely nuts. Some of the responses on this thread show that. You should expect to get muddy walking through a city park on tarmac even if that's your route to the station? It's ok to have a dog jump on you and dirty your clothes because you have a washing machine? You shouldn't walk anywhere where there are dogs if you don't want a dog to jump on you? I literally couldn't leave my house if I wanted to avoid dogs.

Why anyone would reward the dog for behaviour like jumping by making a fuss of it, I don't know. My toddler was badly scratched by a dog jumping at him, and really frightened of dogs for a few years after that.

I don't hate dogs. I don't care about dogs. But I dislike being jumped on by dogs. I dislike dogs running at me. And I get very annoyed when a dog jumps on me, muddy or not. Just like I don't hate drivers. But I get very angry when one drives through a puddle and soaks me.

Your poor child.
Out of control dogs too often traumatise children. This is not OK.

Why is giving a dog ‘dog chocolate’ bay shit crazy?

I mean, personally I file dog chocolate under bat shit crazy because it’s of the same ilk as dog ice cream, the phrase “fur baby”, celebrating your dog’s birthday, and emerging from a walk in the park covered in mud. But dunno if that’s what was meant.

SummerWinds · 18/02/2023 19:02

God help you if you ever have a real problem in life, you sound ridiculous.

I think it's understandable she's annoyed, but unless it's something that happens on a really regular basis (OR you happen to be wearing something expensive), then I couldn't personally get het up about it.

This thread (and many, many others) has shown that mileage DOES vary though.

Always nice to mock others, a sign of someone with good perspective on life surely

Yawn at replies. Irrelevant nonsense.
go get rude to dog owners I hope you meet the wrong ones.

funny thing is I bet you lot will only pick on women alone with dogs if it’s a group of teenagers I bet you won’t say nothing!

‘I bet you won’t say nothing!‘

Agree. You are saying that we would say something to the teens then? Correct.

MargaritaRita · 18/02/2023 19:06

There are far too many dogs and not enough responsible and sane owners.

Dogs should be working animals. They are not suited to living in a house with a small backyard. Then they have to be taken out to a park where people without dogs have to tolerate them day in day out, hundreds of them everywhere, all over the place. Cities and suburbs were not made for pets. Imagine having a pet llama in your living room just like a dog. It's gone crazy now, and the owners are just as batty as their dogs. The adoration of the doggy is the new religion.

@IndiaDreamer

some people like yourself evidently don’t mind going around looking like a mess with mud all over themselves

many of us would be irritated by that

is that really hard to understand?

No I don't agree with this at all. Why should the op just accept, because someone can't control their dog that she has to have muddy trousers.

Well, yeah. Am I missing a joke? Generally when I leave the house I expect to remain clean unless I choose to eat a particularly drippy burrito for lunch or something, and I expect not to be touched by other people or their dogs. It’s reasonable to be pissed off that while minding her own business, OP got jumped on by a muddy dog.

FacingTheChallenge · 18/02/2023 19:09

Dear dog owners whose only defence is ‘toddlers! Sticky kids!’, if this thread was about annoying children, I would join in. I have children.

I would moan about parents letting them wander round busy cafes, allowing them to touch food in displays, letting them scoot at full pelt on pavements etc.

I wouldn’t pathetically shriek, ‘but but but dogs are worse’. Because it’s not relevant to the thread you see 🤷🏼‍♀️

IndiaDreamer · 18/02/2023 19:09

I didn't say I was tempted. Although, speaking to some of you feckless dog owners, well...

Just pointing out that dog owners, like yourself, really don't like their dogs being fed by strangers

After all, you don't know what they're giving them do you.

A sensible dog owner would keep their dog under control to avoid this happening.

Rather than flying into a frenzied rage at an online poster and carrying on letting their dog run free to do what it wants.

Maybe you don't love your dogs as much as you say you do.

Butchyrestingface · 18/02/2023 19:10

Imagine having a pet llama in your living room just like a dog.

Sakes alive, can you imagine the threads on here if someone got savaged hoofed by a pet llama in the park?

It'd be like the Sistine Chapel on acid.

nah she’s right

some people love their dog and treat them like a baby

that’s fine but these people have to accept that other people may not give a shit about their dog and that’s life

its tough shit innit 🤷‍♀️

Like, most people. Dog owners included

RemoteControlDoobry · 18/02/2023 19:11

You could become aggressive and upset the person. They’ll then feel on edge and not want to make eye contact or be pleasant to anyone, upsetting everyone that walks past and before you know it everyone’s being hostile.

You can’t expect excited dogs to be kept on leads in a park - they have far more right to be there than you do.
