Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

The casual way people talk and laugh about mistreating animals on threads like this is fucking mad. I’m on my 4th rescue dog. I’ll never know the full extent of what he was subjected to but he’s covered in burn marks. Possibly deserved though, if he got mud on someone?

Nothing, it wouldn't bother me at all.

@magicthree

can you not see why it would bother other people though?

Not everyone wants to go around looking like a mess. I don’t, for example.

Boomboom22 · 18/02/2023 18:39

Film them and report to the police. Its assault and illegal to have dog so dangerously out of control they jump on a stranger. A toddler could be dead now from their head being smacked on the path even if it did not bite.

That's MN for you thought. You can't have a thread about annoying cats or dogs on here without someone coming on to indulge their masturbatory fantasies about poisoning them. When challenged, they'll say "oooh, wouldn't actually DO it, just tempted to..."

Boomboom22 · 18/02/2023 18:41

@SillyLittleBiscuit thing is I don't care how much trauma fro. Evil people your dog had. If it is likely to harm a human it should be put down. Agree it's psycho to hurt the dog but it never ever then excuses the animal being kept alive to hurt someone if it thinks it needs to defend itself.

I feel a bit like this about the kick the toddler responses

No but you'd be a prick for telling someone to jump off a cliff as well wouldn't you

Take a photo of them. You should. Share it to social media. That is fine. No harm comes to the dogs and the owner may be shamed enough to control their dog. But to advocate poisoning?! No

What, in case they actually go and jump off the cliff? Or because words are like physical weapons to you?

I think the problem would be more about them than it would be about me.

How powerful my words are if they're going to make people go and poison badly behaved dogs. Shame the words don't have the same effect on the lazy shitbag owners when they're asked to keep their dog under control.

Words aren't physical weapons to me no. But for some they could be.

And you just don't say it. I am glad MN agree as that post has been deleted.

Hopefully not too many people saw it and got ideas from it. That would be terrible 😲

@WiIson what did I say was a problem? 🤔

Why is giving a dog ‘dog chocolate’ bay shit crazy?

Are you really so naive that you don't think arseholes would actually think 'ah yeah that is a good idea' and actually take a pocket full of chocolate out with them? We had a spate of scum bags leaving pieces of steak in the local dog walking spots with nails in them. People in this world are completely vile. So I would put nothing past anyone.

We all got to know YOUR innermost thoughts about being tempted to poison dogs though.

But yes, poor you. Zzzzz.

Ontopofthesunset · 18/02/2023 18:55

Lots of people who own dogs are absolutely nuts. Some of the responses on this thread show that. You should expect to get muddy walking through a city park on tarmac even if that's your route to the station? It's ok to have a dog jump on you and dirty your clothes because you have a washing machine? You shouldn't walk anywhere where there are dogs if you don't want a dog to jump on you? I literally couldn't leave my house if I wanted to avoid dogs.

Why anyone would reward the dog for behaviour like jumping by making a fuss of it, I don't know. My toddler was badly scratched by a dog jumping at him, and really frightened of dogs for a few years after that.

I don't hate dogs. I don't care about dogs. But I dislike being jumped on by dogs. I dislike dogs running at me. And I get very annoyed when a dog jumps on me, muddy or not. Just like I don't hate drivers. But I get very angry when one drives through a puddle and soaks me.
