Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

Blip · 18/02/2023 11:36

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

This happened to me the other day. I was walking my dog and suddenly found myself face to face with a Labrador with its paws on my shoulders. Its fuckwit owner thought going for a run and taking his offlead dog along was a good idea. Mine jumps up the other dog owners who we meet regularly and who give her treats. They actually like it but she doesn’t do it with anyone else.

Come and live in farming country 😂

@Heartsandbirds

i don’t want to. Thanks though.

those that do can wallow around in mud all they like. For the rest of us… nah.

DonnaBanana · 18/02/2023 14:47

You were in a park in the winter. You should expect to get a bit muddy

@DonnaBanana

should you? Why? Unless you’re gonna throw yourself down to the ground and roll around then besides maybe the bottom of your trousers why would you get muddy??

bussteward · 18/02/2023 18:17

I think you use the metal pole to spike up and eat the chocolate buttons other posters have strewn on the muddy wasteland.

Flossflower · 18/02/2023 18:17

MarshaBradyo · 18/02/2023 18:10

The metal pole does seem a bit much to me too. I mean a cyclist could get hurt or child

I think it was after the kick the toddler in the teeth post which was a bit crikey

Have you never seen/used walking poles?
I think when a cyclist was cycling straight at me on the pavement he needed to get out of the way not me. I would never ever do this to a child.

Blip · 18/02/2023 18:18

@DonnaBanana why do you get so muddy when I never get mud on my trousers even though I walk I the park most days. What are you doing? Rolling around in fox pop on the ground?

some proper SCRUFFY people on here on who don’t care if they’ve got mud on their clothes unless they’re on their way to a job interview 🤣

Wouldn’t claim that I LIKED it but fortunately, my possession of a washing machine means they don’t stay muddy for long.

Have since learned upthread that having washable clothes must mean they’re “cheap” so not surprised to see “scruffy” being bandied about now too.

@Butchyrestingface

we are in the midst of cost of living crisis. Most of us don’t wanna be putting the washing machine on more than necessary.

do you have money to burn?

cos that’s what it sounds like

There is a poster advocating poisoning dogs. I am pretty sure you can call that dog hate

'A poster'

Hardly representative of the vast majority of people hete who are simply stating they would rather poorly trained dogs would not jump up on them or that they should.jotnhave to expect to get muddy when walking in their local park or wherever.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 18/02/2023 17:57

Yeah. That's just being a prick. The owner is a prick for letting the dog come to you but you'd intentionally harm an animal? Lowest of the low

Well the owner knows how to avoid the situation. Because you just never know who they're letting their dog jump all over.:-)

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/02/2023 18:20

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 18/02/2023 18:13

That goes without saying though really doesn't it. There are entitled, selfish, lazy people who don't have dogs as well.

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

seems a disproportionate amount of such people are dog owners though based on these mumsnet threads!

so long as me and my dog are ok who gives a f

FacingTheChallenge · 18/02/2023 18:21

Blip · 18/02/2023 17:38

At this point wisdom from the thread includes that I should always wear easily washable clothes and fully expect that others will add mud to my outfit if there is any mud in the vicinity. The fact that I never get mud on my own trousers in the park is irrelevant.
Owners of jumping up dogs cannot be expected to apologise as they can tell I give off bad vibes even from a distance of 50 feet.
Nobody will like me or will invite me to parties if I complain about dogs jumping at me with muddy paws and also I need to get therapy because I didn't like it and said so, and also a hobby to occupy my time
Although I didn't mention crying about this or thinking it would kill me that is what some posters think I did.
Some posters think I have no idea how to get mud off my clothing and am mainly posting for help with this.
Also, if I had been wearing a white wedding dress possibly things would have been perceived differently but as I wasn't I am being precious.

This made me laugh.

I actually think more people have agreed with you than I could ever have hoped (Dog owners included). More decent folk around than I thought.

It's still not the dogs fault. And to advocate for that is fucking beyond disgusting

Hitting them with sticks. Not wanting them in parks, towns, buildings at all ever. There is a fair few other that have irrational responses.

I agree by the way that dogs should be on lead if they are not trained with reliable recall. And people should not expect to get muddy walking through a park.

I don't hate dogs. Just the thick selfish ignorant entitled owners who don't give a shit about anyone else and think it's ok to let their dog jump all over strangers, and then laugh about it.

Are you one of those owners?

I'm not advocating for it.

But if it happens, ask yourself how you could have prevented this tragedy.

You are literally telling people to poison dogs. How the hell can you say you don't hate them? Don't be soft

And no I am not one of those owners. As you would see by the multiple posts I have put on this thread.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 18/02/2023 18:26

What about carrying a spare slip lead.
Dog runs up and jumps, lead goes over its head, you walk off with dog.
You'd have a number of justifiable reasons - to stop dog ruining your clothes, to protect your DD from a loose dog, to take dog under control (tie to bench or fence etc) to take dog to park warden or police officer.
Theoretically dog's owner would then have to prove ownership.

KarmaStar · 18/02/2023 18:29

Laugh and stroke the dog.
perhaps mn should have a group thread for people moaning about dogs.
it's not the dog's fault it's down to lack of training and control by owner.she should have dogs under control and she could have apologised.d
would you have started a thread if a toddler had fun up to you and put sticky hands on your trousers and shouted at the parent?
thought not.
