Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

there are so many threads already with pretty much the same scenrio

To save time you could just read the comments on one of those but to summarise

YANBU - all dogs should be on leads / dog owners are so entitled etc

or

YABU - don’t walk somewhere dogs get walked if you don’t want dogs jumping up at you

I think that covers it

Does that mean I can never leave my house on foot then? This only ever happens on my street when walking along the footpath next to the play area. All the local dog walkers walk there dogs there and it's the only way to get out of our road on foot.

liveforsummer · 18/02/2023 17:05

I've got a dog and I make sure she doesn't jump on anyone so I get annoyed when others don't show the same courtesy. If they were to jump on a child or elderly person they could scare or hurt them. It's not ok but I don't know what the solution is. Some very inconsiderate people about.

CottonSock · 18/02/2023 17:07

My dd is terrified of dogs due to out of control dogs like this. Some dog owners think dogs more important than people.

TheBeautifulMoors · 18/02/2023 17:08

The entitlement of some dog owners knows no bounds.

I’d have shouted at the dogs tbh, probably kicked it if I felt I was in danger

I walk through this small park most days regardless of weather and never get mud on my trousers so it's frankly ridiculous to suggest that I should expect to get muddy clothes.

It is an out of control dog that got mud on my trousers.

Hypothesis: it is not the parks that are inherently muddy but you.

Oooh very deep and thought provoking, bit Schrodingers cat esque

Scirocco · 18/02/2023 17:26

YANBU to be annoyed. In addition to the inconvenience caused to you, a badly trained jumping dog could knock down and hurt a child, old person, person with mobility issues. Some people are scared of dogs. Some people are allergic. For some people, having a dog jump up on their clothing could mean they have to go and change, eg it could invalidate ritual purity for prayer in some faiths. People need to have basic control of their dogs in public.

In this instance it is Schrödinger’s dog.

Lovetotravel123 · 18/02/2023 17:37

People like this should also keep in mind that some people are frightened of dogs due to being bitten by them in the past.

Blip · 18/02/2023 17:38

At this point wisdom from the thread includes that I should always wear easily washable clothes and fully expect that others will add mud to my outfit if there is any mud in the vicinity. The fact that I never get mud on my own trousers in the park is irrelevant.
Owners of jumping up dogs cannot be expected to apologise as they can tell I give off bad vibes even from a distance of 50 feet.
Nobody will like me or will invite me to parties if I complain about dogs jumping at me with muddy paws and also I need to get therapy because I didn't like it and said so, and also a hobby to occupy my time
Although I didn't mention crying about this or thinking it would kill me that is what some posters think I did.
Some posters think I have no idea how to get mud off my clothing and am mainly posting for help with this.
Also, if I had been wearing a white wedding dress possibly things would have been perceived differently but as I wasn't I am being precious.

You forgot the pole with the metal spike suggested by one pp. I wonder if I can use that on the howling toddlers who bother me when I am working in my local cafe.

Blip · 18/02/2023 17:47

I forgot @Lentilweaver that you called me sour and obsessive which I think says more about you than it does about me.

Poor toddlers . Every time someone suggests something a poster redirects the harm to a toddler

Maybe the adults should keep it between themselves

I mean.... it's 18 pages later...:) I stand by both comments.

@MarshaBradyo do not worry, your toddlers are safe with me. I am not anti-toddler, having had two of my own. I just think that on a small and crowded island, one is going to have to put up with over friendly dogs/toddlers, noisy drunks, splashing cars and annoying cyclists without carrying around a pole with a metal spike or a taser.

This is a standard walking pole, used by many

Yeah. That's just being a prick. The owner is a prick for letting the dog come to you but you'd intentionally harm an animal? Lowest of the low

WiIson · 18/02/2023 14:37

Not to mention it’s illegal (and fucking stupid)

Which piece of legislation says it's illegal to feed a dog in public?

There are laws around nuisance dogs though.

Pretty sure it's illegal to poison peoples pets.

DanseAvecLesLoup · 18/02/2023 15:25

I love how a general request to keep your dog under control is now 'hate'.

There is a poster advocating poisoning dogs. I am pretty sure you can call that dog hate

Blip · 18/02/2023 18:08

If I followed the logic of the posters telling me never to walk in muddy areas I'd suggest that maybe it's best to only exercise your dog in the garden or on a lead to avoid them coming into contact with a dog hater who might cause them harm...

We just need to have respect and consideration for others. That is all.
If you have this you will not be letting your dog jump on random people.

Lovely.

This happened to us actually. We were walking around the paths by our house. Two Labradors came bounding over and one jumped so hard into my back (i had just had surgery on shoulder a week before) and the owners were all (oh don't worry, they're friendly - like I give a shit) also knocked my son over hard

So my husband said if you can't control your dogs then keep them on a lead.

They went mental at us, called DH a cunt and told us to mind our own fucking business 😂

I think dog owners who call out oh they're friendly are thick as shit, or sorry @nalabae lack common sense. Do they really think that's what every single person is worried about? People could be ill, recovering, be scared of dogs, or shock horror, not want to get dirty. YOUR dog should not be inflicted on everyone.

So yeah, if you are the type of dog owner who would get aggressive back with someone who calmly says to you that perhaps you should keep your dog on a lead in an area full of pedestrians, well then sorry but you are a massive twat

I love dogs btw.

”I think dog owners who call out oh they're friendly are thick as shit”

totally agree. They are.

The metal pole does seem a bit much to me too. I mean a cyclist could get hurt or child

I think it was after the kick the toddler in the teeth post which was a bit crikey

I’d be made up. Love me a dog and couldn’t give 2 shits about being muddy….have even gone into the office with muddy paw marks on my trousers because I too have a dog….🤷‍♀️

That goes without saying though really doesn't it. There are entitled, selfish, lazy people who don't have dogs as well.
