Cultural Appropriation?

I've just stumbled across a few articles that make reference to mindfulness/medication and yoga.

Both articles argue that the Westernisation of both activities is "cultural appropriation" and that white folk in the West should think about how they are using these activities in every-day life. The key themes seem to be:

  1. We need to acknowledge the concepts and where they originated
  2. We must bring attention to the oppression that has been meted out onto minorities and other cultures if we are to use "their" concepts/activities
  3. We should never benefit financially from activities that are stolen from other cultures (e.g. white-middle-class women shouldn't teach yoga if they are getting money from it because it is stolen from another culture)
  4. We shouldn't just take the bits that are "relevant" to our culture - for example, using yoga for physical exercise and ignore the spiritual aspects of yoga.

So... what are people's thoughts on this?

TABU (they are being unreasonable, people who argue this)
TANBU (they aren't being unreasonable, we need to stop taking aspects of other people's cultures and respect all aspects of them)

I say they because I am undecided and wonder if I am missing something!

Gah! I usually notice if OP hasn't come back because it bugs me. Especially when I have provided 'entertainment' for them in the form of a heated debate with another poster🤣🤣

I don't mind in this case, I've got a day off and time to go all the way down the rabbit hole of 'what stuff would we not have in Britain if we couldn't share/borrow/nick things from other cultures'.

So far I've come up with:

Potatoes
Beef
Lamb
Goat
Rabbit
Hare
Chicken
Duck
Corn
Woven cloth
Cotton
Sheep/goat wool
Flushing toilets
Ceramic toilet bowls
The name 'Britain' (back to Albion we go)
Roads
Bread

(this list would be longer but someone rang me for something work related, damn their eyes, and put me off!)

So we'd best put our red deer skin tunics on and get back to shitting in holes and we'll eat fish and venison cooked over a fire. Vegetarians, line up here for your chewy wild carrots and garlic soup. We can have it with some extremely gritty bran filled porridgey stuff.

Yum.

I would like to see a reality tv show where some of the BNP/EDL 'go back to where you came from' racist twats have to survive for a week on what we'd actually have if there had never been any immigration into Albion, nor any trade with any other culture.
