To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

I will update, I hate threads where they don't.

Me too OP, me too.

Mommawasafarmgirl · 15/02/2023 21:49

I am sure the OP will update if and when she is ready. She has a lot on her plate and deserves a bit of patience.

Mariposista · 15/02/2023 22:09

OP imI hope you are celebrating your sweet relief with a large glass of wine right now. And getting booked in to the family planning clinic (or sending DP in) 🤣

BethFromThisIsUs · 15/02/2023 22:45

shameless placemark. Soz.

kc431 · 15/02/2023 22:47

I know someone who got pregnant at 50 with IVF and an anonymous sperm donor 🤷‍♀️ And they’re not on that Wikipedia page, that won’t be all people ever as that would be in the tens of thousands

PriamFarrl · 15/02/2023 22:53

The thing is that 1% is one in 100. That’s a fairly high chance really.

Carrying to term is quite another thing.

OutofEverything · 15/02/2023 22:58

1 in 10,000 births in the US are to women over 50. It is very rare.

OutofEverything · 15/02/2023 22:59

And that rate of birth includes IVF conceptions.

The whole point of those stats is to validate the possibility of conception over 50yrs old rather than exemplify the slim percentage.
Yes, we know that it is “very rare” for women of that age to get preg😂 thank you very much.

321user123 · 15/02/2023 23:33

My childhood Best friend was an oil sue for her parents and was conceived at 46 or 47?
Entirely natural.
everyone in the family used to joke about it… (tbh it was obvious about the oops or part given that the youngest sibling before her was 15 when she was born so…).
this was not too many decades ago (way less than 4 decades)

Yes that's how I read it. I am another of that age who is now revising her decision to stop using contraception! I still have regular periods so think I have been too blase. Thanks mumsnetters! I hope it all works out for you OP.

PermanentTemporary · 15/02/2023 23:38

A 1% chance of conception is better odds than for condom use and really even for the pill. So imo it's not that irrational to rely on age as contraception. Not perfect of course.

Rollingaroundinmud · 15/02/2023 23:46

My piano teacher's wife had her last child at 45 naturally they were both shocked. She did have a healthy boy who is now in his 30s or 40s. I don't think it's impossible but there are a lot more risks involved.

Yes. We experienced secondary infertility and tried unsuccessfully to conceive for 3 years. But it would be sods law to get pregnant now!

I'm 56 and until last year was having regular periods. DH had a vasectomy after DC2 was born, but if he hadn't we would still be using contraception. I know someone who had a baby at 53, when her dc were in their 20s. She assumed she was going through the menopause.

My periods stopped at 46, 5 years ago. We still use contraception!. I’m totally paranoid there may be a stray egg somewhere 😂

treasurefoil · 16/02/2023 02:51

@Pearsandclocks more and more women now are waiting to have kids until their 40ish. So can't rely on any stats, some women get pregnant first time, others take years. You may think body has decided to menopause, so yer relax no more kids, but that's when your body will randomly surprise you with a child. Every woman from puberty age needs to expect everything from their body, no woman's body is textbook

marketen · 16/02/2023 05:06

any update, OP?

Holyguacamollie · 16/02/2023 08:22

No update yet - I couldn't get to town yesterday. Elderly parents needed me to dash to theirs. DH picking test up today and it will be waiting at home for me, I should be back tomorrow or Saturday.

I will definitely let you all know when I've done the test.

Sorry for annoying no news update

And some never get pregnant at all sadly.

An egg donor as well I would imagine.

GoldilockMom · 16/02/2023 08:29

I seriously admire you patience in not dashing for a test!

mottle · 16/02/2023 08:30

It's totally possible. Good luck

Phrenologistsfinger · 16/02/2023 10:20

I’ve been positively bathing in sperm between the ages of 37 and 40 - result is 13 pregnancies (none past 6 weeks) and no baby! So I hope in my late 40s, I won’t need to worry at all. #infertility bonus

We’re all different!

Mommawasafarmgirl · 16/02/2023 10:24

Hope your parents are okay @Holyguacamollie. Good luck with everything.

vivainsomnia · 16/02/2023 10:35

Quite a bit of confusion on this thread. Getting pregnant at 49 with own eggs is very very different to getting pregnant with donor egg (usually women under 30). The latter changes are not much lower than a 40 year old getting pregnant. It's the age of the egg that is the determinant factor.

Also getting pregnant naturally at 45 is rare but nowhere as rate as 49. My grand mother gave birth to my mother, her first and of course o my child at that age.

Healthy eggs decrease significantly after 40, and even quicker after 49 to a point that they are just about non existant. So although possible, a natural pregnancy at 49 is very rare and one that leads to a life birth almost unheard of but of course, still a possibility, as is winning the lottery if played in the first place.
