To not know if I can get pregnant at 49?

Holyguacamollie · 14/02/2023 13:57

I stopped using contraception a few months ago because quite frankly I'm sick of it and when I googled getting pregnant at 49.6 it said it was 0-1% chance.

It felt like v good odds.

However. I now 'feel' pregnant and I'm a bit panicked. Period due in a few days.

Surely I couldn't be could I?

My Mums grandmother claimed to have a baby later in life - my Mum's aunt.

50 years later it was discovered that Mum's aunt was actually her sister, brought up by her grandparents as she'd been born to a single teen mum.

Pretty common I think, so I'm not sure I'd panic too much about the stories of older mums in the past

My teen story is from the late 20th Century, and my two SILs working experiences are from this century.

Oddly my mum - who was an older mother herself - never bothered telling me about any family history of when women in our family had their last children. As a teen due to my school friend's mum having her child at 49, I started asking when my cousins who were the youngest children were born and finding out the age of their mothers.

My mum had no issues telling me who was adopted, or who had IVF as she thought it is an amazing technology.

Good luck with the test 👍

Mama1980 · 15/02/2023 12:33

I hope you get the result you want op.

reddwarfgeek · 15/02/2023 14:31

I've known a few 42/43 year olds to have natural conceptions but not beyond that, apart from a friends aunt who got allegedly pregnant at 47. Never met her though!

Hope you get the result you want, OP.

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/dec/06/record-number-of-over-45s-giving-birth-in-england

The number of women aged 45 and over giving birth is at the highest level since records began 80 years ago, figures show.
The number of live births in this age group rose from 1,619 a decade ago to 2,366 in 2018. In 1938, when records began, there were 2,085 births to women over 45, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Those are births so m/c and abortion wouldn't be in that - and over decades and people having rough 150 contact in life - that starts to add up to fair few people who know someone - but it still a rare event so much so ONS takes 45 as end of childbearing years for women.

I think our risks have been higher last 14 years relying on condoms - than OP being 49 and we've never had any scares. So fingers crossed she's fine but worth looking at contraceptive options to reduce the risk even further going forward.

Good luck!

Poppins2016 · 15/02/2023 15:17

I suppose the trouble with 0-1% chances is that somebody has to fall into the 1st bracket... 1% chance is unlikely but not impossible...

*1%, not 1st!

Your period isn’t quite due yet and you’re already convinced you’re pregnant? At 49, you almost definitely aren’t! It happens but it’s extremely rare. Far more likely to be menopause.

sazzy5 · 15/02/2023 16:02

I had a pregnancy at 46, it was ectopic though.
I can imagine how you feel, I hope you get the result you want.

OoooohMatron · 15/02/2023 16:07

Of course you can get pregnant if you still ovulate and are having unprotected sex. Not sure how you've reached the age of 49 without knowing this.

Casimira · 15/02/2023 17:46

Eek! I hope you get the result you want. Xx

Boggles the mind, doesn't it?

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 15/02/2023 17:57

@Anonymous48 plenty of people on this thread saying it is impossible

It is not though

Maireas · 15/02/2023 17:59

I don't think anyone on this thread is saying that it's impossible for her to conceive. Unfortunately, the odds against a successful pregnancy to term are quite high.

I'm not sure why you tagged me. I was one who was astounded that the OP didn't think it would be possible.

OhMyBleedingHeart · 15/02/2023 18:39

Not one single poster has said it's actually impossible which would be silly because 49 isn't the oldest to give birth. There have been questions as to how common it is since everyone seems to know a story about a 50 year old who gave birth

Scottishskifun · 15/02/2023 19:54

Hope you get the outcome your after OP
As others have said it is rare but not impossible

zoopigi · 15/02/2023 19:55

Hope you get the answer you are hoping for

GettingItOutThere · 15/02/2023 20:03

any news OP?

AffIt · 15/02/2023 20:03

One of my great aunts had her youngest at 45 - she had, however, had eight other children in 20 years and was clearly incredibly fertile.

Sadly, he was born prematurely and had what I suppose we would now call extensive learning difficulties - I remember him as a sweet soul, but he died in his mid-30s when I was about 11 in the early '90s.

whatausername · 15/02/2023 20:33

@Holyguacamollie is this silence passed out in shock or drinking in relief? (I say relief as I think you said you don't feel that you want to do nappies and sleepless nights again)

volleyballing · 15/02/2023 21:05

My aunt was an older mother. She thought she was starting the menopause when her periods stopped due to pregnancy.

Teenagehorrorbag · 15/02/2023 21:17

DMIL was born in 1927 and was the youngest of quite a few. It wasn't until she was grown up that her mother told her she was actually the daughter of her oldest sister, and her sister's children (from later on) were actually her half siblings. She doesn't sound as though she was that fussed about the revelation, so it probably wasn't especially unusual - although she always called her parents her parents, even though I suppose technically they were her grandparents.

Can you imagine?? Such different times.......Grin.

GrandTheftWalrus · 15/02/2023 21:25

Any word op?
