In an apocalyptic scenario, would you survive long?

I wouldn't! At all. I cannot run fast or fight, I'd be a goner immediately the zombies or aliens or whatever descend. When I watch a movie of tv with this theme I can't ever keep up with the characters when they make a quick plan about who is going to do what where, and when they give each other silent hand signals eg going into a room they think is occupied I'm just like huh what do you mean? Grin

If you reckon you'd survive a good while if the shit hits the fan, what are your best survival skills? Are you good at going with the flow, being flexible, thinking quickly on the go?

I like to think we have a good chance. DH is pretty famous for his survival in the wild skills. We live very rurally, he knows how to hunt, we have water purifier products, guns, cans, generators, a cellar, lots of other equipment we might need. Ultimately though, I’m not sure we’d want to survive. If things were really bleak, like in The Road, I just don’t want to potentially subject my children to that. My DH is the complete opposite though and says there is always hope. He’s been in some really bloody bleak awful situations where plenty of people would rather just go to sleep and not wake up though, so I think his perspective might be a bit skewed. Let’s all hope this doesn’t happen! And yes to the PP, you want Ray, not Bear.

Shannith · 14/02/2023 10:34

I like to think the horse would be useful in a quick escape scenario. DD would have to get over her current ambivalence towards them but I think this might be just the push she needs.

However, hers would stop to eat grass every 30 seconds. So probably dead before they really hit going. Sorry DD.

Mine would be unfazed by zombie hordes, nuclear explosions and wild dogs but if a leaf moved in a slightly unexpected way she'd spook and ditch me on an instant, merrily galloping off to freedom evil I am eaten.

Shannith · 14/02/2023 10:36

The cars would be fine as they seem to exist in their own version of the apocalypse anyway. One dog would die by my side, the other would probably join up with the zombies at the first opportunity and hunt for them.

endoftheworldniteclub · 14/02/2023 10:41

@Shannith my dog too. 😂 Should a branch have fallen down in the garden, she’d shit herself. Zombies, she’d be fine!

endoftheworldniteclub · 14/02/2023 10:42

Are there zombie dogs or can only humans turn into zombies?

Only humans. But animals get a bit scarce on the ground with zombies and humans eating them. As far as I know, no one ever eats their pets, but watch your neighbours very carefully.,

ExistenceOptional · 14/02/2023 10:45

Our rabbits would die quickly. Any shock spooks them so they would have a heart attack.

Mammyloveswine · 14/02/2023 10:51

Id be rubbish.. first of all I wear contact lenses so worry about losing one.

I'm overweight and unfit so wouldn't be able to outrun any zombies.

I have no upper body strength to pull myself up out of harms way.

I often think about how I'd fare in different scenarios and have decided in any disaster I'd quite simply just die.

Minikievs · 14/02/2023 10:51

I always have this conversation with my OH! He'd last for AGES. Loads of skills. Fit and well, strong.
Whilst I'm fit and well, I just couldn't be ARSED with surviving. It always looks so difficult and stressful, and life is shit in a zombie apocalypse so what's the point?!
I'd just lie down and give up

Andsoforth · 14/02/2023 10:57

I have the menopause advantage - a few extra pounds as a calorie cushion and years and years of pent up rage barely held in check by hrt. Once that runs out, nobody near me will be worrying about zombies.
I also have adhd and already forget to eat and sleep; regularly mislay my glasses and have to adapt on the fly to my own stupidity. I think I’d come into my own in a survival situation.

thecatsthecats · 14/02/2023 11:00

Depends on the apocalypse really.

I can light fires, recognise a fair amount of wild food, and know how to fish, plus I can grow my own food.

But in a nuclear scenario I'd rather be wiped out because those skills are useless.

Lindy2 · 13/02/2023 23:37

Surviving an apocalypse seems like very hard work. I don't think I'd have the energy for it really.

Yes this!

Thanks for this escapist thread OP I love reading them Grin

1000yellowdaisies · 14/02/2023 11:10

Nah, i was thinking about this while i was watching the last of us... I'd definitely be killed in the first wave

ExistenceOptional · 14/02/2023 11:11

You know where the band find a community where life is normal but the rulers have it way better than everyone else? I would stay in one of those.

I think I’d be alright. They’re the walking dead, not the swimming dead so I’d just cruise out to an island with my family & their partners and we would live off the land and sea. Between us we have the skills to do most anything.

So, I’d be bee lining to steal a luxury yacht if the apocalypse happens.

But they just wander along the sea bed or float, the cunning fuckers.

I used to think luxury yacht could be sweet then watched S1 of Fear the Walking Dead. Still ends in tears .

Animals turn by eating the zombies. There's a scene in the walking dead were Eugene says things can't get any worse (no water). Then a pack of zombie dogs, containing a German shepherd and doberman turn up.
Fyi kill any pigs that you see and burn them. They mutate the virus and make it more communicable to humans.
If I could get to my adult children then we'd have a decent chance between us. Let's face it the men fight over the two Ws, women and water.

I will try to remember to kill any pigs.

Now I feel like watching I Am Legend. Such a good film!

endoftheworldniteclub · 14/02/2023 11:29

If only I knew how to fly a plane it could work to live like in the NF series Into the night..

BarrelOfOtters · 14/02/2023 11:31

I'd have to ditch my husband as he would be absolutely useless unless you could kill zombies with spreadsheets.

I'd probably do OK - once you got to the having somewhere to grow food stage.

starfishmummy · 14/02/2023 11:40

Well I can't run, obviously haven't tried fighting nut somehow I doubt it. Otherwise I'd probably last as long as my meds held out.

Vitriolinsanity · 14/02/2023 11:47

I reckon I could get a plane up, but landing it could be more tricky. I'll give that some more thought.

I reckon I'd be OK for a while, but I have a very low tolerance level so any whiners would be at risk.

NotBadConsidering · 14/02/2023 12:09

Without even thinking about zombies, every time I watch The Sound of Music I wonder how as a family we would go if it was us hiding behind those gravestones/tombs.

There is no way in a month of Sundays my DC would stand deathly still and shut the fuck up for just five minutes to avoid capture by Nazis, so anything more prolonged to avoid death/zombification/doom is completely out of the question.

milkyaqua · 14/02/2023 12:15

I landed a helicopter in a dream once, so am unreasonably confident in my flying skills.

Useyourfork · 14/02/2023 12:20

I don’t know that much about zombies. Can you even kill them? Would a blow to the head do it? I have a very heavy rolling pin that could knock a burglar out or even a large frying pan.
Can they climb stairs? 🙂

😂 Helicopter it is then. @Vitriolinsanity can get it up and you can land it. I’ve watched all 3 seasons of Into the night, so I think I have a decent chance too.
