1981 millennials

I was surprised to find out the other day that my sister (born Jan '81) is technically considered a millennial.

She won't accept this as she, like myself, regards millennials as the hipster generation, revelling in wokeness etc. She remembers renting VHS tapes, owning a Sony cassette walkman, watching MTV, and the introduction of the world wide web.

Gotta say I was surprised and my first thought is that lots of people in their early 40s probs don't regard themselves as millennials.

Your sister is in a 'micro generation' known as a xennial. I know this because I am one too

She's a Xennial.

She’s very much on the cusp of Gen X and Milennial. I’m a bit younger and one of my earliest bosses used to tell me approvingly I was a bit more Gen X than millennial.

We are the last lucky generation, we graduated before the financial crisis and university fees were still lowish.

Yes - I'd regard 1981 as the latter part of my gen - gen x I have alpha, gen z and millennial children though...

Technically you are though! Millennials are defined as those born 1981 to 1996.

I'm 1981 and only heard of the term Millennial when I was in my 20s.
It's a bit of an "on the cusp" year as I have a foot in both the old and the new.

Things moved so fast that people only a few years younger are/were very different with tech - due to the younger ages they got phones and Facebook. Some of that difference might have faded a bit with time. Don't know

Well maybe technically but my childhood and teenage years were very very different to someone who was born in 96. Who invents these "generations" anyway?

It's all a bit weird because being born in 1964 some people say I'm a Boomer, but my parents are boomers so it doesn't make sense!

I'm a 1984 baby and I've come to terms with the 'elder millennial' title. DH is 1979 and being that little bit older in the '90s definitely makes him cooler than me.

I'd be irked if I was 1981 and just missed the cut off for coolness though.

If you remember the challenger - you're a gem x
If you remember 911 - you're a millennial
If you're younger than that, you're gen alpha

To be boomers, your parents would have been 15 at the oldest when they had you. Baby boomers are born after the end of ww2, in the post war baby boom.

I don't think those are good examples though cos I was born in 88 and remember all those things.

It makes me laugh when older colleagues refer to millennials - I’m 40 with a mortgage, pension, 3dc and senior management job where they give me quite a bit of responsibility. From their comments I’m amazed I’m capable.

Agree. My 93 year old granny remembers all them.

Dunno. But when she was in her late 30s she didn't consider herself in the same generation as all the woke 20something hipsters.

The media are constantly conflating gen z and millennials, calling us snowflakes when many of us 40 or nearly pushing it. I'm 84 and relate to many aspects of stereotype millennial but acknowledge that I was lucky to graduate from uni when I did. I got my graduate job a year before the financial crash in 2008: this shaped what way my career went and is what allowed me to buy a house by the age of 30.

Had I been born just 2 years later, things may have been very different - graduate places and jobs became very hard to get and so millennials from those years onwards had a much tougher time of it

I'm a late 80's millennial and definitely remember renting videos, having a Sony Walkman, MTV and the intro of the web. Millennials are the woke 'hipster' generation. She's getting millennials and Gen Z confused.
