1981 millennials

I was surprised to find out the other day that my sister (born Jan '81) is technically considered a millennial.

She won't accept this as she, like myself, regards millennials as the hipster generation, revelling in wokeness etc. She remembers renting VHS tapes, owning a Sony cassette walkman, watching MTV, and the introduction of the world wide web.

Gotta say I was surprised and my first thought is that lots of people in their early 40s probs don't regard themselves as millennials.

The media are constantly conflating gen z and millennials, calling us snowflakes when many of us 40 or nearly pushing it. I'm 84 and relate to many aspects of stereotype millennial.

If you're 84 you're defo not a millennial. 😛

I’m 1977, is that xennial? All I know is it was the best 😅80’s childhood, 90’s teenage years, I wouldn’t change it

Nomorescreentime · 11/02/2023 20:41

I was born in 1980 and don’t feel like I fit in either gen X or with millennials! But of course that is probably going to be the case for anybody born at these transition points. The whole concept was created for targeting advertising anyway, wasn’t it?

Dyslexicwonder · 11/02/2023 20:45

I was born in 1976 wtf is challenger ?

The 1986 space shuttle disaster.

EsmeSusanOgg · 11/02/2023 20:48

Most Millenials are 30s and early 40s. Youngest Millenials are c1996/97. I remember renting VHS, needing 20p for the phone box etc.

RandomMess · 11/02/2023 20:48

I now just feel very f*ing old 😭

Gen X

GhostBridezilla · 11/02/2023 20:49

1981 only just a millennial and doesn’t really identify as one. 1985 defo a millennial. It’s funny how those few years make such a difference.

Dyslexicwonder · 11/02/2023 20:49

I see just googled it. I think the miners strike, Chernobyl or the Berlin Wall coming down would be more seminal moments.

I was born 83 and definitely not a Millennial I am going to read up on Xennials

1983 is comfortably a Millennial!

I think lots of folks have mixed up Gen X with Millennial.

YukoandHiro · 11/02/2023 20:51

@Hellocatshome you are a Xennial - read up and feel at home with your people!

QueenofFox · 11/02/2023 20:52

I’m also 1981 and definitely a millennial in outlook. Peers just a couple of year older than me got grants instead of fees, cheaper housing. I feel a yawning chasm between me and gen X in terms of drinking, finances and way they think about climate. I’m not woke.

PeanutButterSmoothie · 11/02/2023 20:54

Yeah, I find the woke brigade insufferable. Self important children.

We’re Xennials, I’m 1980 also. Stuck between Gen X and the Millenials. Definitely makes sense to me as feel a real lack of belonging to either Gen X or Millenials.

AllWorkYoPlait · 11/02/2023 20:56

I'm an 86er. I don't think millennials are woke. Certainly not the 80s ones. That's Gen Z's job.

WhispersOfWickedness · 11/02/2023 20:57

1982 here and a Xennial. Childhood in analogue, adulthood in digital 👍

2Old2BABPpresenter · 11/02/2023 20:57

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xennials#:~:text=Xennials%20are%20the%20micro%2Dgeneration,those%20born%20up%20to%201985.

for those wondering Xennials micro generation are those born 77-83 although some source say 85 is the cut off.

mackthepony · 11/02/2023 20:57

I'm in that group apparently (82 birthday)

I identify with both generations but I certainly don't feel woke

PeanutButterSmoothie · 11/02/2023 20:58

I'm more half asleep than woke. 😂 Privilege what?

I would suggest that your life would be better if you did not apply general stereotypes to entire generations of people. For one thing, it would make you come across a lot less pompous and narrow minded on internet forums.

PerpetualStudent · 11/02/2023 20:59

86 here. Full millennial. Thought I was pretty woke until I started teaching Gen Z college kids - it’s exhausting 🤣

PuddlesPityParty · 11/02/2023 21:05

Yep it’s weird being in a micro generation! I’m a Zennial and can’t relate to the younger gen Zs but can’t say I relate much to millennials either.

PuddlesPityParty · 11/02/2023 21:06

Zillennial ** spelt it wrong 😂

theworldhas · 11/02/2023 21:07

Xennial. Approx 77-83. Especially in the 79-81 bracket. We’re the cool generation who had an offline childhood but then embraced and grew up with the internet in our teens. Born in 81, the vast majority of students at my university had mobiles, but there was still about 10% holding out!
