I just feel people put dogs on too much of a pedestal. I like dogs, but I just think people almost see them than more than they are, which is, let's be honest, an animal.

I understand how they can be an elderly persons only companion, can fit well into the right family, can help people in need in many ways I do, but just some examples.

I work in a cafe. When we say dog friendly area is outside we get looked at like we've said they can't bring their child in.

I live with my mum and my daughter who's 16 months. She bought a sprocker puppy, he's big, he's massively energetic and he play bites.
He bit her and made her cry, then knocked her over and jumped on her. She's heavier than him. When I asked her to put him behind the gate she said "he's only a baby" and "this is his home, it's not (my daughters) home) every time he's a little bugger she just says "he's only a baby"

People who will fully argue with that they they thing dogs are equally worth the same as children, like there is some comparison. I'm sorry but my own flesh and blood who literally grew in my is never a comparison to a dog?

I just don't go gooey over them. I like a cute dog as much as the next but I'd never seem them or put the trust in them around children like some people do, and recent news of a dog sadly killing a little girl doesn't seem to make people think twice even it's just "my dog would never do that"

AIBU to have that opinion?

Imagine being resentful of helping your daughter flee an abusive relationship. Wow. I hope I never have this type of relationship with my kids. I’d climb over hot coals to ensure they’re safe and well.

ClarrieBurnett · 11/02/2023 13:51

You are not being unreasonable. And the new dog needs to take itself and your Mum to obedient classes post haste. Buy a muzzle and put it on the dog around your dc until the time that it and your Mum both come to heel. I like well behaved Dogs but actually prefer eateries and Pubs where dogs remain outside thanks👌🏿

It’s not a comparison, but it’s a hugely important thing to identify. A dog biting a child can put the child’s life at risk, whereas a dog mouthing is a normal developmental stage that all dogs go though, and completely normal at 6 months.
but it’s still not okay to act like they’re ‘just mouthing’ especially with kids in the house. I have a legend of a spaniel who is nearly a year and was quick to take to the ‘grab a teddy’ rule for when he needed to mouth but on the very odd time there wasn’t one about and he took to my hand instead, I’ll tell you, if that had been one of the kids he’d have well broken their skin and hurt them. Everyone one uses the ‘just mouthing’ thing, and some dogs mouth until nearly age 2 and it’s bloody sore!!!!

Nobody is saying mouthing is okay or for OP to just let the dog mouth her child. However, it IS important to differentiate, because one could very well result in the death of her child, and one is highly likely to resolve with appropriate redirection. The advice to deal with each is different.

YA most definitely NBU! I think that there is far, far more silliness around dog ownership now than has ever been.

In the past, people who called their dog a "fur baby" and treated it as if it were their child would have been thought of as a bit ridiculous and slightly unhinged - rather like the character in All Creatures Great and Small who had a dog called Tricky Woo. She was laughed at by the vets in private, as she was so obviously deluded. But nowadays, such anthropomorphism seems almost the norm. It's bizarre!

Thousand likes for your reply👏🏿 It was Mrs Pumfrey wasn't it 😉?

I don’t have dogs, I grew up with them, I don’t have them.
But we can’t go in certain places because people now bring them inside and DD can’t cope with them.
Personally I think paying customers should take
priority over dogs.

But the people with the dogs are paying customers, @Teatime55. A lot of them probably wouldn't be frequenting those places if they couldn't bring their dogs in.

After a holiday in a part of Somerset where dogs weren't allowed in any of the pubs, my ex and I were very careful about where we went to stay. You're not usually allowed to leave dogs unattended in holiday cottages and I don't go on holiday to cook my own dinner!

ThisIsBrandNewInformation · 11/02/2023 14:20

One reason I like MN is because of the number of fellow sensible people who dislike how dogs are allowed to behave in this country!

Put on pedestals, allowed on furniture and beds, licking faces, sitting in cafes etc. Just yuk. Then the biting (my son was bitten two years ago and the owner blamed him. Because he was holding his football at waist height when he should have held it over his head where the dog couldn’t reach it apparently).

I have tried to analyse the abnormal dog worship in the UK. I know people here have a reputation for ‘stuff upper lip’. The emphasis is on the nuclear family. Many don’t seem to like other people or extended family! So here folk are turning to dogs for companionship? Their ‘best friend’ is a canine. Solitude over the pandemic led to more dog ownership. Are people here turning to animals rather than people as they don’t know how to socialise? What other explanations could there be? Why is the UK ridiculous with treating dogs like humans??!

Then don't start threads slagging off dogs and be grateful you have somewhere to live.

Reported. This thread is about YOU...I imagine you are just the type who says "Fido's just playing" as it's mauling someone's leg..or perhaps you put your "furbaby" in a dog pram👌🏿

When I rule the world, the phrase ‘he’s just being friendly’ will receive an automatic life sentence!

YANBU. I saw recently a shopping centre rowing back on letting dogs in because they were making a mess and I thought it sounded a good idea - why do you have to take your dog everywhere? People are obsessed.

That was Silverburn shopping centre in Glasgow. They ran a dog friendly trial which myself and many others including dog owners said was doomed to failure and after a few months it clearly did which is why they pulled the plug on it . That dogs were allowed in the food court which is a major part of that shopping centre is ridiculous and not surprising to hear dog poo was found there.

FizzyTango · 11/02/2023 14:34

Hi @mrspotatohead21 , I’m really sorry you are in this position and your mum sounds quite abusive. I know this is not really the point of the thread but as a dog lover I’m a bit horrified by the way your mum is also treating the dog. She can’t love it…she ignores it and doesn’t walk it. She’s an absolute piece of shit dog owner and I feel sorry for the dog, you are all lucky given the under stimulation and lack of training that the dog isn’t causing more issues.
But I know that’s not the point, your mum is also being very unfair to you, I hope you can get out and find somewhere safe to live.

ClarrieBurnett · 11/02/2023 14:45

Too busy allowing their badly behaved fur extensions of themselves to bother sheep/kids/cattle/walkers/cyclists you mean. I am with the thoughtful sensible dog owners responding on here , not the furblind batshit (dogs on pedestals above humans mob) who are as rabid as their pets. (Presumably you are in the latter category👌🏿)

No, we aren't. Not on any literal, objective level. Obviously we mean more to ourselves, out of loyalty, and obviously as a species we're capable of achieving more. But objectively, there's no hidden quality we have that sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom and makes our lives more meaningful and important. I do not believe in souls or think that if they were real, we would have them and other animals wouldn't.

I'm not an animal nut btw, I don't love dogs or have other animals I feel more strongly about. But the belief that humans are special and different to other animals, beyond just the obvious fact that we have evolved to have superior intelligence, is not a positive thing in humans. Throughout history it's been used to abuse people from different cultures, abuse animals, and abuse the planet. It isn't a good thing to think like that.

Well I do believe that we as humans have a soul. I am a Church goer . (Don't worry I will pray for you). Please stop trying to lecture me as my Faith is hugely important to me . I would ask you not to post one of your longwinded Science responses as I would find it offensive. Have a nice weekend👍🏿

Erm, you commented on MY post, not the other way around. I would respect that comment from MissWings, but not you.

Science is hugely important to me so please don't post one of your religious responses, I find it offensive 🤷‍♀️

You find science offensive? That’s … quite extreme. And I was brought up in a churchgoing home. With a parent with a science degree.
