I just feel people put dogs on too much of a pedestal. I like dogs, but I just think people almost see them than more than they are, which is, let's be honest, an animal.

I understand how they can be an elderly persons only companion, can fit well into the right family, can help people in need in many ways I do, but just some examples.

I work in a cafe. When we say dog friendly area is outside we get looked at like we've said they can't bring their child in.

I live with my mum and my daughter who's 16 months. She bought a sprocker puppy, he's big, he's massively energetic and he play bites.
He bit her and made her cry, then knocked her over and jumped on her. She's heavier than him. When I asked her to put him behind the gate she said "he's only a baby" and "this is his home, it's not (my daughters) home) every time he's a little bugger she just says "he's only a baby"

People who will fully argue with that they they thing dogs are equally worth the same as children, like there is some comparison. I'm sorry but my own flesh and blood who literally grew in my is never a comparison to a dog?

I just don't go gooey over them. I like a cute dog as much as the next but I'd never seem them or put the trust in them around children like some people do, and recent news of a dog sadly killing a little girl doesn't seem to make people think twice even it's just "my dog would never do that"

AIBU to have that opinion?

So what? That’s YOUR opinion. If others like dogs mind your business you don’t control how others choose to think or live

Toddlerteaplease · 12/02/2023 03:28

I don't want dogs in my usual Caffè Nero, or in John Lewis. In Neros, there isn't the space for a huge dog to lollop around. And I think it's massively inappropriate that they are allowed into a local cathedral. Service dogs excepted.

What do the dogs in the cathedral do that makes it inappropriate?

If you’re on holiday with dogs, there isn’t anywhere to leave them if you want to visit a cathedral.

As long as they’re well behaved, I can’t see the issue in such a large space.

@MissingMoominMamma because it's a church!

I still don’t see the issue. God created dogs and we domesticated them- it’s not like taking an elephant in!

Your mums attitude is going to create a nightmare dog .

They need boundaries and positive but structured leadership not babying

Heartsofstone · 12/02/2023 08:42

Yadnu all the dog worshipping is ridiculous, I know people who can’t leave dogs alone because they get lonely. Otherwise sensible people I know and observe are treating dogs like babies. I’m ok with that, their choice and all.. but, the expectation that their precious doggie needs to be loved and accepted by everyone has too far.

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 12/02/2023 08:44

YANBU, OP. People who have dogs need to learn to keep them to themselves. I don't want to interact with your animal, have your animal jumping on me "being friendly", or trying to mooch food from me when I'm in a cafe.

Rowgtfc72 · 12/02/2023 08:47

I have a 6 month old dachsund puppy. He is only a baby. He has very sharp teeth and will hurt when he nips. He's also 7 kilos and can hurt when jumping on you.
He doesn't need to go shopping( local shop wondered why my husband stayed outside) nor does he need to sit in a cafe ( it's boring for him).
He likes walks outside and to be corrected when he's done wrong- so he feels safer.

He's frightened of small children- they're noisy, unpredictable and don't understand the rules of dog play.

He's not my child, I have one of those too, but a dog. He will always be a dog but a very much loved part of our family.

To some people dogs are their only family. To people without children, their babies.

But a dog needs more than love and food and water. It needs training and an understanding of how to behave and its place in its family.

Ps. Spaniels are crazy but loving dogs and need strong willed owners and good training.

God created elephants too!!

My local church has a service once a year especially for the animals and everyone takes all sorts of pets. It's a bit crazy but nice.

We haven’t yet domesticated them in the U.K. yet though 😁.

True 🤣

Gameofmoans81 · 12/02/2023 17:04

Yanbu I totally agree.
There is SO much dog poo around where I live, I can’t stand them!
if the streets were covered in human shit the same people who leave their dog’s mess would be OUTRAGED! Why is it any better that it came out of a dogs arse??

MissingMoominMamma · 12/02/2023 17:10

The thing is, I always pick up my dogs’ poo. They’re well trained and I’m respectful of people who don’t want dogs around them (mine rarely go near anyone on walks anyway- they’re too busy sniffing).

My smaller dog comes away with me on walking holidays (in my van), so if I go into a (dog friendly) cafe or pub, I take him in. He doesn’t go on furniture, doesn’t annoy other people, doesn’t shed, or beg… what’s the harm?

Unfortunately not all dog owners are like you, that is the only problem. I wish they were!

juice92 · 12/02/2023 21:42

100% agree, recently I got nipped by a family members dog while having lunch at another family members house. I was told that the 'dog was just being friendly' and when I was asked if the dog could be put in a different room while we ate, I was told that it 'cruel'. Also not allowed to tell the dog off, and have to put up with its terrible behaviour. If we go somewhere and these family members are there, their dog has to come so we have to sit in the 'dog friendly area' and it does my head in. I don't wanna sit in the freezing cold outside on a winters day, or be surrounded by dogs when having a meal.

Dogs are not the same as children.

Pfeiffle · 12/02/2023 22:08

Your mum’s being very unreasonable here. Dog’s aren’t children, they need early training and plenty of exercise to help them adapt to our world. I’ve also met a few people who are happy to use a dog as the favourite against another family member. It seems like this is what your mum is doing to you and your son: the dog is the favourite baby. This could really backfire on your child and her dog.
