Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

how are children more unhygienic in comparison to dogs? Can you elaborate?
Snotty children who wipe their nose with their hands and then touch everything they pass is pretty unhygienic but it's life in the community, just as dogs, cats, smelly people, rude people are.

The point being it's hard to go anywhere to avoid them, all the local cafes, shops, pubs, Starbucks, costa even the big shopping outlet I live near has them in, it's becoming very hard to go out if your scared of them
This is the issue with most people with fears. The world can't revolve around everyone fears. The onus is on people with the fear to manage it.

Yes, I can imagine how frustrating and restrictive it must be, I really do but expecting dog owners to hide because of a very few number of people scared of dogs is not reasonable.

I don't expect anyone to hide because of me, but I do expect people to realise a dog Is an animal & should be only allowed outside of places on the floor!

SharkVega · 07/02/2023 13:53

Both Starbucks and Costa official policy is to not allow dogs. None of the ones local to me allow them.

Actually some of the covid rules were great, as I could order a coffee and get it without going inside which was handy if I had the dog with me.

vivainsomnia · 07/02/2023 13:53

Dogs are animals & should be treated as such & not like the babies most people treat them like!!
Out of curiosity, why not? Why isn't it every owners entitlement to treat their dogs like babies?

Dogs should be well behaved and not cause any trouble, but everything else surely is noone else business?

Children inside places is NOT the same as animals!! This is the problem with our society we have given dogs the same rights as people! They are ANIMALS

That's a point of view to suit your need, not a justification as to why dogs should not be allowed in.

It's everyone's business when the dog baby gets in other people's spaces, eg inside places. Treat them like babies outside of places. The issue is then being inside.

Statistically speaking you are more likely to catch viruses spread by children than dogs.

Not in any of the ones near me, I've asked & there policy is to allow dogs in.

So are we! I respect animals the same as humans, sometimes more. Being an animal doesn't in many people's view equate to being treated no better than slaves.

Life is not all about rights and arbitrary reasons why some should have more than others.

Dogs that lick their bums, ground, various objects then lick you. Where does it end? You can't just throw a sweeping generalisation out there and then back it up with your opinion, and not fact. There are adults who are unhygienic yet you choose to aim your biased remarks at children. Imo in relation to hygiene dogs gave bacteria, human beings have bacteria, they are just different kinds. Is one more hygienic than the other? I'm unsure, I would need to research it or consult a scientist.

I also think some dog owners can't understand or are oblivious to the fact that some people are scared of dogs. Patting the dog or feeding it biscuits as "look it's friendly" isn't going to cure a genuine fear. It is acceptable to fear Spiders, snakes and have other fears, but dogs seems to be not allowed.

Tbh I don't care if you are afraid of dogs or snakes or spiders or whatever else. I don't expect you to go near my dogs, I would rather be left in peace but I wouldn't avoid bringing my dogs somewhere in case someone was scared of them, that would be ridiculous.

vivainsomnia · 07/02/2023 13:58

Nope, not when the owner of the place welcome dogs. It's the person who creates a scene who becomes everyone's business.

As for people saying that people are just as unhygienic as dogs - the vast vast majority of humans shower or bath daily and wash their hands frequently, especially after Gibb to the loo.

Every single dog licks its arse every day and that of other dogs! Not seen many humans at that (although doubtless some do 🤣)

They really don’t. Mine never lick their arses or each others and definitely not other dogs.

I have never yet come across a town in the UK where nearly everywhere lets dogs in, I suspect you are exaggerating. You have also picked out three incidents which also are atypical. No dog owner wants their dog peeing inside or sitting on the furniture or climbing on the bar.

Flinstones · 07/02/2023 13:58

I see the full dog loving brigade are out. So this has become a pointless debate now.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 07/02/2023 13:59

I dislike dogs and don't go into cafes etc that allow them.

AmillionReasons · 07/02/2023 13:59

Oh and my dcs have very good hygiene, wash hands regularly etc. Some adults however I'm not so sure (previously spotted people not handwashig after using a public toilet for instance). This whole stance of comparing children to dogs is uncalled for.

Silverbook · 07/02/2023 14:00

WFHbore2023 · 07/02/2023 13:47

To be fair, my friend has a toddler who is incapable of catching his coughs.
I'd rather any dog sit at my feet when I eat than sit next to him! 🤣🤣

Children spread more human borne viruses than dogs and touch more surfaces.

I have kept dogs for 15 years and had children for the last 4. Kids have passed on more illness in those 4 than dogs ever have. Obviously that’s just an anecdotal example but statically, I’m correct.

vivainsomnia · 07/02/2023 14:00

It's not my opinion it's a fact a dog is an animal!
But it's not a fact it means they should only be entitled to what you deem they should. There is noone to define what is right or wrong in this instance. The only rights are those define by the law and the business owner. Not me, not you.

My anecdotal evidence is the same. Every time we see our grandchildren we’re ill within a few days.

funinthesun19 · 07/02/2023 14:01

As long as it stays under the table and doesn’t start “saying hello” to me. I just ignore them when they get close to me, when I know some owners are expecting a big fuss to be made. Annoying.

Yes I would rather be left in peace and not have dogs running and jumping up at me. As I said in a previous post I digressed and wasn't meaning this in relation to dog friendly cafes.

Sounds like something you need to take up with the owners of places that are allowing dogs in. It isn't something dog owners need to worry about, they are just doing what is allowed not what someone with a phobia deems 'should be' be allowed.

AmillionReasons · 07/02/2023 14:07

Again comparing children to dogs, did you forget that you used to be a child yourself? Adults are just as capable of spreading germs, my dc cough into their elbows for instance, can't say the same about a member of the public that coughed into someone's face the other day. Children are more vulnerable at catching things, so are adults with with low immunity.
