Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

People let dogs lick their faces and slurp out of their cups/glasses in cafes and bars -yuck, complete lack of hygiene.

Some idiots refer to their dogs as their babies or fur babies - yuck what the heck is wrong with them. They sleep in their beds - sounds very odd.

Some really odd people out there BUT if that's what they want to do, it's up to them unless it affects the hygiene or comfort of others. I just wish a few more would pick up the poo and/or not leave plastic poo bags littering the countryside.

All this fuss & distress because people can't treat dogs like the animals they are! Doesn't make any sense to me. Dogs should not get the same rights as humans its ridiculous how people behave about them.

People can take their pets (or animals) to cafes, if the establishment allows it. I am not sure why you are so mad about it.
Go to cafes that don't allow dogs. It is that simple.

BankOfDave · 08/02/2023 21:16

I haven’t RTFT as CBA at 30 pages but YANBU.

I am a dog lover, grew up with dogs and if logistics were better I would have one at home. However we have recently stopped going in our local (gastro) pub as it’s being overtaken by dogs. The pub smells a mixture of wet dog and bleach. I don’t want that in my pub or to navigate water bowls and splayed out sleepy dogs to get to the bar.

Some dogs are also not comfortable in that environment and have started barking loudly. Very stressful for the animal and also other customers.

cafes near woodland walks etc. I’m personally ok with. All pubs, restaurants, cafes, retail shops - just no, as much for the dog as everyone else.

Is it not the right of the owners if they allow dogs or not in THEIR businesses?

Totally agree. It's so gross having them sit on the couch/chair that are made for people 🤢 do what you want in your own home but don't subject me to the furry couch at a Cafe that your dogs been rubbing its anus on 🤮

They don't have unfettered rights. They have to abide by discrimination and hygiene laws, for example. If they stick within those, I guess so but given that there increasingly aren't dog free places, I think we have to also question whether as a culture we're happy for people to pay the price for animal's comfort.

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 21:20

As explained a million times, it's very difficult to find an establishment or shopping environment where dogs arnt allowed, I wish it was simple.

It's perhaps simpler than getting people on this thread to actually here that there aren't that many places and that dogs can make some people seriously sick (on top of the hygiene issues!)

I have seen some awful examples of rotting teeth in the mouths of people eating and slurping on cups and cutlery in cafes I go to. It all gets washed. Who cares?
If you are worried about dog germs on cups in cafes, then why are you not worried about people germs? Humans are vile

I refer to my dog as my furbaby. So what? What harm is that causing to other people?

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 21:22

HOWMANYBYCYCLES well said. Totally agree

If, as others have said, it's just so impossible to find somewhere that only allows guide dogs, then clearly we are pretty happy with that as a culture.

Maybe if there was a call for more dog free places there would be more dog free places? No?

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 21:24

Because your fur baby is actually a dog! That does disgusting things! Treat it as you wish in your own home but don't inflict your disgusting dog on me & others.

No. No one has actually checked whether people want the allergy inducing loud and dirty things in public places. They've just assumed it.

I think humanity probably holds the record for disgusting things. We practically make it into an art form. Jackass, anyone?

How odd then that all these businesses aren't folding and going under. Very bizarre.

How is someone "inflicting" their dog onto you? If it is just by being in the same room, then I suggest you leave that room/cafe/whatever and go to a grip shop.

I'm not and neither are plenty of others here. I care about every human being and don't like to see anyone excluded.

Mad that all these dog friendly places are still open and more and more keep appearing though innit

Not at all. Most people don't challenge things even if they don't like them. It doesn't mean their experience is not marred. I'm not sure what your point is?

Why? Without regulations people do very selfish things.

I'm not sure how you're not getting it. The point is that it's obviously good for trade to allow dogs. If it wasn't, they wouldn't.

Why what? That they're opening due to demand and are doing nothing wrong? If they weren't there then no one would be going would they. With or without dogs.
