Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

One comes with a high risk of anaphylactic shock and death and is one of the most common allergies around. The other will usually give you nothing more than itchy skin and eyes 🙄

How l wish that l just got ‘itchy skin and eyes’ I’ll just add severe wheezing, swollen tongue, swollen tonsils, itchy throat, itchy mouth.constant sneezing, swollen face, hives all over that join together, eyes so puffed up they close.

Yeah sure it’s just a bit of ‘itchy skin and eyes’😑

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/02/2023 20:23

I forgot swollen lips.

Did you miss the word 'usually'?

Atethehalloweenchocs · 08/02/2023 20:28

I take my dogs everywhere but expect them to behave and not bother anyone else. If only the people with the two children at the next table over when I went for an expensive lunch last weekend were as considerate. The crying baby is one thing, you cant help that. But the 5 year old who sang the same two lines from 'Let it go' for an hour over and over very badly - wtf?

DippyBunBun · 08/02/2023 20:29

Both my children have severe dog allergies so i have to agree.. my youngest 18 months loves dogs & wants so badly to stroke them but for obvious reasons cant.. the amount of people that just think its okay to let their dogs jump all over the kids is ridiculous even in cafe's etc.. i must admit where i can i avoid dog friendly places but agree its frustrating when soft furnishings are covered in dog hairs!

I’m severely allergic to balloons (latex in general but bouncing balloons are a nightmare) and if I come into contact my hands swell, burn, and it triggers my asthma. Not anaphylactic but quite scary. I don’t expect people to stop using balloons, I take action to mitigate the risk. Going to a birthday party, I’ll take my antihistamine before hand and have additional extra strong ones and inhaler on me. I’ve never felt the world should change for me.

I know 3 other people like me.

Ballon’s are just not as widespread as dogs though. They only generally appear at birthday parties. Dogs are everywhere.

@NeedAHoliday2021

As a mother to a nut allergy sufferer you have my sympathy however I'm pretty sure ballon's are a lot easier to avoid in everyday life than a dog.

I mean most people don't take random balloons to cafes and bounce them about do they?

Welshmonster · 08/02/2023 20:34

Those scenarios are disgusting.

my worst thing is dogs that bark constantly while I’m out enjoying a relaxing drink.
i grew up with and around dogs and know it’s owners fault for poor training. Why take your dog to the pub and sit next to the bar if your dog is going to bark loudly at everyone that is buying a drink.

went to a music quiz and a dog barked the entire way through it. So annoying

And I don't know a single person allergic to dogs at all.

And I don't know a single person allergic to dogs at all.

You must have a very narrow social circle then. It’s between 10-20% of the population.

Sunshineboo · 08/02/2023 20:41

@Welshmonster and i bet you won't go back.

like i won't go to places that attracts lots of parents with toddlers as i find loud shrill noises
very difficult to cope with, and in my experience there is a lot of that in cafe pubs restaurants and shops with lots of toddlers and small kids.

the pub needs to decide

do i want to be dog friendly and risk the dogs barking and being a pain, knowing that they may put off some people but attract others

or not be dog friendly and accept people with jobs will chose to go elsewhere

NeedAHoliday2021 · 08/02/2023 20:42

I actually came into contact with balloons far more than dogs when dc was little. Although I see dogs, I don’t come into “contact” with them as I generally don’t walk around stroking other people’s dogs. I’m in a rural location where dogs are always in pubs but I’ve never seen any of the bad behaviours on here.

i also work in a hospital where we have weekly therapy dogs visiting patients in the wards and staff… we’ve not had one incident report of allergy related issues since we started in 2018. Mind you, we also serve peanuts in the a&e shop as the clinical director decided the risk was low and they’d be in the right place if such an issue occurred. Interestingly, it never has. His view was that any allergy can result in death but you cannot eradicate all allergens and actually it could make reactions worse to do that. (I’m not scientific but that was the line the doctors gave).

No not at all. I know lots of people allergic to cats. Maybe no one has ever divulged they're allergic to dogs.

My entire family and DPS close family have dogs and all our friends do as well.

None of the dcs friends have ever said they're allergic to the dog. But a few take antihistamines for the cats when visiting

NeedAHoliday2021 · 08/02/2023 20:44

@HeBeaverandSheBeaver that was an example, it’s all latex so hand rail on escalators, some hair elastics, handle bars in parks, little stoppers on things, Wellington boots… so so many items.

shinynewapple22 · 08/02/2023 20:50

I was thinking of the various MN threads the other day when I went into a cafe where the owners had 3 cats, and two separate customers had dogs in there - a couple of them getting very excited at the cats. Oh and the owners cats came over to our table and one climbed up on to DH's lap. Lovely relaxed atmosphereSmile

Omg! Where on Earth do you eat!!!! Never heard such rubbish. Such exaggeration to make it sound ok to bring dogs inside!

You have this way of talking about this as if your opinion is the law, and in fact no establishments allow dogs and everyone taking them into them is therefore secretly a criminal. It’s very strange.

You might if people were defending their right to leave balloons all over sofas, chairs, tables and bars and randomly run up to you and rub them against your hand when you have a coffee. Dog hair stays on soft furnishings. The allergens don't leave with the dogs. If that treatment controls your reaction then yes, it's not a severe one either.

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 21:05

Your post makes no sense whatsoever! I wish my opinion was law but sadly it isn't. It's my strong opinion that dogs should not be allowed in anywhere they should stay outside & on the floor. As explained many times over this long post, I'm fed up with dogs absolutely everywhere I go & I find it disgusting that people take them inside eating establishments.

Flinstones · 08/02/2023 21:08

All this fuss & distress because people can't treat dogs like the animals they are! Doesn't make any sense to me. Dogs should not get the same rights as humans its ridiculous how people behave about them.

Not really I'm happy with not owning a fur baby & not behaving the way I see some people with dogs! Utterly ridiculous
