What is that all about? It's not like it's just a particular subgroup of people, and we can hope they'll grow out of it -- they're all ruddy well at it. I even saw an elderly lady hawking and gobbing today.

marmaduke, this reminds me of a toe curlingly embarrasing experience i had once. Our department was very multi cultural, and we had a (admittedly rather strange) chinese guy doing a PhD. One tea time he did the most enourmous hawking flob into the sink where the teas are made - everyone around the table just looked flabbergasted. We had quite a few chinese people, they looked equally horrified. Yuck yuuck yuuuuuck.

It's not just spit round my way, it's phlegm. And wherever I am in the flat, I can hear that tell tale back of the throat clearing noise and then a pause and then the sound of it hitting the pavement. And whenever I go out........

Jackieno - I agree. What excuse is there for it? Apparently runners do it cause they get all phlegmy - but I dont give a crap if they feel phlegmy - get a fecking tissue or summat!! And footballer are always at it too

Urgh, this gives me the boke just thinking about it. Here in Edinburgh, we have the Heart of Midlothian on the High Street on the site of an old prison. People spit on it for some reason (the reason escapes me, but it is historical apparantly although I think it's more likely to do with football rivalry). Anyway, I have to cross the road as I can't bear to even think about all those green slimers sitting on the stones.

YANBU its a totally disgusting habit!! i cant bear it when you walk along the road and someone does a big mouthfull of phlegm on the pavement [bleurgh emoticon] it used to be a prosecutable offence i think to spit on the pavement due to the spread of infections like TB and alot of people with TB nowadays dont know they have it for months!! its disgusting to think that my DD could walk along the street and fall in someone elses spit on the street eeeewwwwww

The thing that I wonder about is why people suddenly have this excess of spit. I know my parents and grandparents generations didn't gob all over the place, so why is our generation so flobby? Someone should investigate.

It is truely and utterly revolting. And you are right Broccoli - there does seem to ben an epidemic of it.

It is disgusting. My stomach was turning last night watching shots of the England footballers doing it on the pitch. Kept hoping they would get tackled and end up rolling in it.
This thread is welltimed - I have just emailed the council about the disgusting state of the road on the way to school - so much gum, gob, dog poop and dropped food. Made worse by it being an on-kerb parking zone and the residents all letting their hedges overhang the pavement, so we have about eight inches of pavement actualy useable. It's like doing Nadia Komaneci (sp) on the beam every morning.
