...for hating people GOBBING ALL OVER THE PAVEMENT?

Well am I?

What is that all about? It's not like it's just a particular subgroup of people, and we can hope they'll grow out of it -- they're all ruddy well at it. I even saw an elderly lady hawking and gobbing today.

WHY? WHAT IS THIS FOR?

I do not want to walk though gobbets of other people's phlegm on the streets. It is DISGUSTING. STOP IT NOW.

I thank you.

I just remembered a quote from (I think) Charles Dickens, when he went on a trip to America, he said they spat so much that it was as if the street was paved with oysters . Very evocative image (not that I've seen that many oysters, but still). Bleeurgh.

Whats with the China thing? Are they excessive spitters?

southeastastra · 07/02/2008 19:54

it is a cultural thing, i noticed a mum doing it in the playground at school once.

nasty though, mil tells people off she she's doing it.

frogs · 07/02/2008 20:03

I gather China is notorious for it -- some cultural taboo about swallowing phlegm, or something? Considered healthier to spit? Dimly remember someone telling me something along those lines.

But surely it hasn't always been this way in the UK? My mum tells of going to France in the 50s and being hugely diverted by notices in the post office and the metro saying, 'DEFENSE DE CRACHER'. Which suggests it can't have been common here at that time.

But bloody nora, everyman and his dog is at it now. But... if everybody on here is unanimous that it's disgusting, who ARE the people that think it's ok? Really, who ARE they? Would like to stop people in the street and ask, "Excuse me, do you not think that's gross?" but am worried about getting stabbed or something. Clearly some people must think it's okay?

YANBU.

I am getting to the stage where I am going to yell at the next person who does it near me. Agree with glamamas falling down moment .

I've been to China, its very common to spit in public. Sodding footballers should be red-carded for it too.

I was walking through Glasgow city centre a couple of years ago in the summer (or one of the three warm days that passes for summer here) and someone gobbed ON MY FOOT!!!

I was nearly sick - only my vomit phobia stopped me chucking up there and then. It is a truly vile habit, and people that spit in public should be put in the stocks.

nickytwotimes · 07/02/2008 20:17

YUCK YUCK YUCK!
YANBU. It is absolutely disgusting to spit in public.

scotlass · 07/02/2008 20:22

yuck, yuck. yuck
In my past life as a nurse I regularly put my hand on someones sputum as I was making their bed, AND the evil senior nurses even made me try and filter someones sputum through filter paper telling me that was what we had to do before sending it off to the lab. I hate spit now!!!!

frogs, I once saw this skank gobbing on the floor outside a shop, right in front of where me and my kids were walking and I said in a very loud voice to the kids 'oh god that is DISGUSTING' and he became enraged and told me to 'fuck off you tramp' or some such lovely retort. So being stabbed is a real possibility, don't bother saying a word.

Not sure what makes grown men do this. I think teen lads think it makes them look 'hard' when they are in a gang, but a fully grown man?

I have a real thing about it, it is truly vile. I was brought up to look out for and avoid 'dirty old mans spit' (lol) in case it got trodden into the house....there's a case for ALWAYS taking ones shos off in the hall, if ever there was one.
