To be enormously offended by the C-word

So today a man called me a c* during an argument, and I was assured by everyone around, including three women, that this is no longer an insulting word, not shocking or taboo, and that I was unreasonable to be enormously offended.

This idea is shocking to me. Surely it’s very offensive and deeply misogynistic? I was definitely offended, and hurt that the women I was with thought it was no big deal.

Or am I unreasonable? Is it so unoffensive these days as to be a casual, unremarkable part of conversation?

I'm not sure it's a class thing either, I think you are either a sweary house or you're not

Ah. Right you are then.

😂

Crazycrazylady · 06/02/2023 10:50

It shouldn't in theory be any different to calling a man a 'duck' but it is .
Not sure why.

Backtoblack1 · 25/04/2023 22:22

For me, Fanny is worse. I just hate the word. The C word is one of the oldest words in the English language. I don’t understand why people make such a fuss over it and not words which are very similar.

Bonjovispjs · 04/02/2023 19:33

I only ever hear it on mumsnet, it's horrible.

Yes! I only see it used on here, and I can’t recall hearing it for decades. I find it disgusting, especially when it’s justified by ‘we can say what we like on here’

I say fannying around a lot.

Why is Fanny, that popular girls' name of the 19th Century, worse? There are plenty of Fanny Streets in the UK!

@WildFlowerBees I think you’re on to something. I think that’s how it was used towards me. Though it was followed up with ‘shut your mouth you stupid little woman’ so that was also a pretty big hint as to his intentions.

Sorry that happened to you Sad

I was abused by a man for not getting out of his way, so he shoved me. I then called him a father fucking dick because I didn't wanted to use use misogynist terms like mother fucker or cunt!

No regrets.

Manichean · 26/04/2023 17:52

I like a good swear and Cunt is a lovely word. However, any many calling a woman a Cunt is being a misogynist and damned rude.

Cam22 · 26/04/2023 18:06

It is a truly hideous word. People who resort to it are vile.

TheAudie · 26/04/2023 18:11

I’m from Glasgow, and I’ve heard it used so often throughout my life (since being a tiny toddler) and it being used as a term of endearment (aye, he’s some cunt) that it doesn’t offend or even bother me in the slightest

TheAudie · 26/04/2023 18:12

And I hate the word “fanny”.

i think I associate fanny with a vagina, but cunt as just a generic swear word

Lovemusic33 · 26/04/2023 18:24

I used to hate it but then someone came into my life that was just made for the C word so now I use it to refer to him, I don’t really use it for anything else. Too me it’s one of those word to describe someone you really dislike or possibly hate, I don’t use the word ‘hate’ often.

beguilingeyes · 26/04/2023 21:39

The one I hate is minge. It sounds like something that's gone off.

Gtsr443 · 26/04/2023 21:45

Nah. Cunt is magnificent.
Especially if you put "silly" in front of it.
We South Londoners use "silly cunt" as a term of endearment.

OneTC · 26/04/2023 21:54

I like it, only use it endearingly though, like when a friend does something easily that I struggle with.

Using it in anger IRL is about as serious as it gets though and it's not a good way to avoid getting your head kicked in

fryanddry · 26/04/2023 21:56

why is it more shocking than being called any other curse word ? bxtch, wxore, sxut, all equally offensive to me

IrregularChoiceFan · 26/04/2023 22:03

I'd be more offended by the "shut up you stupid little woman" comment. Cunt is the same as twat imo and I wouldn't enjoy being called it but don't think it's worse than other swear words.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/04/2023 22:06

I used to hate it too. After lockdown, Game of Thrones, The Boys, etc., really doesn’t bother me any more. In fact, in certain circumstances, it’s just the right word and I rather enjoy it then.

Sissynova · 26/04/2023 22:06

I don’t find it any more offensive than other swear words used as insults and I don’t think it’s any more misogynistic than dickhead, cock etc

Modda · 26/04/2023 22:12

I'm terrible for using Cunt. I love the way it sounds. That and motherfucker. Both are enjoyable to use.

5128gap · 26/04/2023 22:14

I think its offensive. Partly my age, as when I was young is was only really used by the roughest most coarse people, or as the very worst thing you could say in the most extreme situations. Often together with another misogynist or racist insult 'fat ..' 'ugly...' etc. So it has a really strong association for me with horrible people being angry, aggressive and intimidating that's difficult to get past.

Grumpi · 26/04/2023 22:18

not unreasonable to be offended by it bc that’s how you feel.

Feeling offended doesn’t necessarily make it actually offensive. That’s subjective isn’t it, as many people on here have proved.

The offensive part is that he clearly wanted to offend / upset / provoke you.

Words are just words, it’s your reaction to them which give them meaning (to you)

AuntyPonsonby · 26/04/2023 22:44

Definitely not unreasonable of you to feel offended, but equally not unreasonable of him to use the word.

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/04/2023 22:48

I find behaviour offensive, not words. Obviously the two can be linked but I would have been just as pissed off has a man called me a twat, a dick, a wanker etc. as calling me a cunt.
