To be enormously offended by the C-word

AmericasfavoritefightingFrenchman · 04/02/2023 19:29

So today a man called me a c* during an argument, and I was assured by everyone around, including three women, that this is no longer an insulting word, not shocking or taboo, and that I was unreasonable to be enormously offended.

This idea is shocking to me. Surely it’s very offensive and deeply misogynistic? I was definitely offended, and hurt that the women I was with thought it was no big deal.

Or am I unreasonable? Is it so unoffensive these days as to be a casual, unremarkable part of conversation?

The world would be a better place if we said twunt more.

Tangerinie · 04/02/2023 20:56

I do like twunt

NameInUseAlreadyAgain · 04/02/2023 21:00

I put ‘ing twat’ after it when I’m alone in the car and someone cuts me up. It’s quite satisfying

RobertaFirmino · 04/02/2023 21:02

Can't get worked up over it. Words like rtard or mng are much, much worse.

amberjoleaf · 04/02/2023 21:07

So many women on here being hysterical about being called a vagina. It's another (albeit not a nice) word for a vagina. How is it misogynistic?

I don't think men are remotely as horrified when they get called a dick. Or a knob. Or a wanker.

How can it be misogynistic when there are male alternatives that get thrown around too?

Abitofalark · 04/02/2023 21:07

It is far from inoffensive and it is awful the way that women throw it and other misogynistic terms about so casually on mumsnet, which the owners do nothing to deter though they are very particular about offensive language in other cases.

I don't think cunt is regarded as misogynistic.

WordtoYoMumma · 04/02/2023 21:12

I don't understand swearing. Who decided cunt is more offensive than fanny? Where did this come from?

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 04/02/2023 21:12

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 04/02/2023 19:50

Ever called someone a dick? Dick, twat, prick and fanny seem to be used a lot on mumsnet. Cunt is no different

I agree.

It's also my favourite curse word 🙊

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 04/02/2023 21:13

You see twat on here all the time. And prat. If they are allowed, why is cunt so offensive?

Applesandcarrots · 04/02/2023 21:19

We shouldn't discriminate. Use all sex insults equally.
I have often let out something like "You are such a dickhead, you twat".
Nonsensical? Probably.

#equality

Rockingcloggs · 04/02/2023 21:19

I don't think there is a single word in the world that would cause me to become offended. Cunt especially, it's just a word, nothing in those 4 letters would upset me. Just a word.

Exactly this. I can’t understand why it’s so different to many other words? Twat and cunt literally have the same meaning so why is cunt the end of the world?

I’d rather get called a cunt than a bitch tbh

GoAgainstNicki · 04/02/2023 21:25

nca89 · 04/02/2023 19:53

It doesn't bother me, I find bitch or slut more misogynistic, don't get me wrong I wouldn't appreciate being called it but I wouldn't be deeply offended, it's a pretty generic slur, not particularly personally insulting.

This in a nutshell

GneissGuysFinishLast · 04/02/2023 21:26

I don’t get offended by any swear words, including words for body parts.
I don’t see it as misogynistic, I use it equally to swear words for male body parts, like dick, cock, ballsack, bollocks, and then other ones for female body parts like fanny, fud, minge, tit etc. - and then arse, arsehole, etc.

All equally used 😂

Cunt just means person round these parts.

Cocobutt · 04/02/2023 21:27

OP why is it do offensive?

Why is twat or dick not as offensive?

Dallidalli · 04/02/2023 21:28

Don't move to Scotland 😄
Somecunt, this cunt, making a cunt afit, good cunt...
Honestly one of my favourite words in the English language and the way the Scots use it is almost poetic.

Dallidalli · 04/02/2023 21:33

Also if someone called me a cunt and I genuinely did not display any cunty behaviour that would justify such an insult ( I still consider this one depending on tone of voice and context) then the appropriate response would be to tell them to fuck off.

I’m a teacher and I hear it maaaybe 20 times a day.

Does anycunt have a pencil?
Somecunts phoning me!
I was at the shop and this cunt came in to buy chips
Awright cunts!
That cunts sound! (means nice)

If you correct them, they don’t even realise they have done it most of the time. It just means person 😂

Chatterboxy · 04/02/2023 21:37

I take no more notice than if anyone called me an idiot/bitch…. I think if someone calls you a cunt they expect an instant reaction, just shrug & ignore/walk away, takes the wind out of their sails!

Americano75 · 04/02/2023 21:41

I'm Glaswegian and I hear the C word on a very regular basis, and most of the time it's not used in an intentionally insulting way. However, in the circumstances you describe it most certainly is. What a fucking prick.

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 04/02/2023 21:54

I live in London. My husband is a Londoner and until he met me, c* was is his regular Sarf London vocabulary. I eventually got him to stop as I hate it. I find it to be a violent word. We have a daughter and I cringe when she hears it within the family too.

My side of the family rarely swear, apart from the odd "shit".

Yarrawonga · 04/02/2023 21:57

I only ever hear it on mumsnet, it's horrible.

Same here.

Ever called someone a dick?

No. Never.

PinkSyCo · 04/02/2023 22:21

For me, with any swear word, it’s the way it’s said that would make the difference in whether I would be offended or not. So if someone called me a cunt with venom in an argument I would be offended, but no more so than if they called me a bitch or a cow, but if they called me a silly cunt messing about I wouldn’t mind at all.

Devoutspoken · 04/02/2023 23:18

Swear words for me are measured in terms of how much I don't want the kids to say or hear, cunt is amongst the worst
