Vegan Shoes!

PlatesofMeatFeet · 02/02/2023 21:18

A friend has just posted this on FB:

"Keep seeing signs for “vegan shoes”. Is it a way of just selling cheaper non leather shoes at an inflated price"?

I think I agree that it's just a marketing ploy to charge more for uncomfortable plastic shoes?

Or are we both being unreasonable? (Oh and her family are vegan)!

Marketing ploy!

underneaththeash · 02/02/2023 21:19

I can cope with vegan shoes - it's vegan diets that are unhealthy.

PennyToffee · 02/02/2023 21:20

I always laugh at Superdry's vegan marketing. No one is eating their over priced clothes.

MichelleScarn · 02/02/2023 21:21

Absolutely a marketing plan! I remember a 'pleather' skirt I had back in the late 90s in my teens which l thought I was "The Bomb"😆😆 way cheaper than leather, these days with the vegan angle prob same cost!!

PuttingDownRoots · 02/02/2023 21:22

Pleather being remarked as vegan friendly leather was an inspired move.

I would be intrigued to see the environmental impact of both

underneaththeash · 02/02/2023 21:24

*they lack essential amino acids (so kids don't grow), calcium, B12, iron.
Vegan substitutes are really over processed and full of shite.
It's a really good thing to just eat non processed fruit and veg a few times a week - but not full time as we are omnivores and need a balanced diet

And no you do not absorb calcium from non-diary sources in the same way.

lalaloopyhead · 02/02/2023 21:24

Absolutely...I saw a not inexpensive bag advertised as vegan leather...so plastic then yeah? Gives me a bit of the eye roll.

Quinoawoman · 02/02/2023 21:24

Some of us don't like wearing dead animal skins on our feet. Just a personal preference.

It's fairly easy to tell with the old fashioned labelling what is real leather and what isn't, but it does help if things are advertised as vegan as you don't have to go looking for the information.

meetmeatmidnights · 02/02/2023 21:30

I mean pleather isn't vegan either is it, being derived from oil and all?

DialsMavis · 02/02/2023 21:37

It is a marketing ploy and it fulfills a need. I don't want to wear leather so I don't. I am very glad that trainer companies have caught up as I love trainers nearly as much as I love animals. I would never wear those Superdry monstrosities though as I don't need to tell people my eating preferences on the soles of my feet.

I do agree about the environmental impact though regarding cheap plastic shoes though.

DD idoesn't want to wear leather either but sometimes I make her as I can't bear the thought of throwing away 3 pairs of plastic school shoes per year. She has funny feet and sensory issues and a v long walk to school. When her feet have stopped growing I will buy her vegan DMs or similar.

But my feet are fully grown so I am happy to spend £££ to buy shoes and trainers that last as long as leather but nothing died for.

bigbluebus · 02/02/2023 21:39

Makes me eye roll too. These shoes have always existed - they just weren't branded as vegan previously.

I was always told that leather shoes let yout feet breath and plastic makes your feet sweat. So there must be a lot of sweaty footed vegans around.

CSPS2019 · 02/02/2023 21:43

Marketing ploy!

I compromise and buy second-hand leather.

I’m not sure if you realise though or if you are just being sarcastic ….vegans don’t wear clothing that is made from any animal products so wool etc so I think it’s perfectly acceptable marketing to say they do vegan clothing.

DialsMavis · 02/02/2023 21:47

@CSPS2019 DD has had some amazing never worn/barely worn trainers from vinted so I have thought about doing this

Did anyone ask for your opinion on vegan diets?

being made from as you say oil (not sure pleather is made from that?) it’s not made from an animal byproduct. It’s fake leather…no animals harmed in the making of it 🙃so I guess vegan 🤷‍♀️

Purpleberet · 02/02/2023 22:02

There’s always been fake leather shoes and boots which are imo overpriced, given you can get real leather for the same cost. The only difference now is that they try to promote the plastic as being a positive thing if it’s vegan. I don’t think they’ve necessarily upped the price because of it.

i believe the vegan label is genuinely useful to vegans because it also refers to the glue, some contain animal products. Not all faux leather shoes are vegan.
Also you can get faux leather made from all sorts of things now like cactus, mushroom etc (though I expect they’re heavily processed too and probably contain plastic)

Ultraninja · 02/02/2023 22:04

I have a pair of vegan friendly boots from Heavenly Feet. They are wonderful. Comfy. They have been worn a lot for 4 years and just now showing signs they might split soon. So it's not all tat.

CSPS2019 · 02/02/2023 22:46

@DialsMavis Vinted is brilliant and usually my first stop when looking for something ‘new’.

We don’t eat processed animal food. If you’re vegan just flip the packet and you’ll see what you’re eating!

It must be a heavy burden to have the knowledge of what every vegan eats. Perhaps that's why you're so angry.

You are aware cheese, bread, bacon etc are all examples of processed food? Try a cheese sandwich I'm sure your mood would improve.
