Vegan Shoes!

A friend has just posted this on FB:

"Keep seeing signs for “vegan shoes”. Is it a way of just selling cheaper non leather shoes at an inflated price"?

I think I agree that it's just a marketing ploy to charge more for uncomfortable plastic shoes?

Or are we both being unreasonable? (Oh and her family are vegan)!

Yes. Are you aware that milk is the not the only way to get calcium?

Yes, obviously. But some products make it much easier. Same with iron.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 03/02/2023 20:54

@MrsMikeDrop maybe you could compare worldwide milk intake with osteoporosis.
While some scientist worry that low dairy consumption can lead to osteoporosis. Others have noted the correlation between hip fractures (a common measure at population level) and high dairy intake. Hence ongoing research that seems to show, kale may be the older lady's best friend, plus; vit D, pre-biotics, probiotics, gut biome, fibre.......with a general feeling of this being something we haven't got quite right yet.

On going research, totally fascinating, feck all to do with vegan footwear.

If you want to start a thread on how awful you feel a vegan or plant based diet is, go ahead.

Plastic shoes are fucking horrible things.

ChristinaXYZ · 03/02/2023 21:15

I assume they are vegan because not only are they plastic but that the glue and other bits have no animal products. Which means every single part of them will be in landfill forever.

I haven't eaten meat or dairy for over 50 years. According to a consultant, I have the bones of a 30 year old, and at a recent routine check up for a non-diet related issue, the doctor was asking me for nutritional advice.

It's a case of knowing what you are eating, not shovelling random crap into your mouth. Also exercising appropriately too, of course.

Vegan shoes are improving in quality and range all the time.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 03/02/2023 21:32

For those worried about nutritionally deprived children, DD who is a lifelong vegan runs marathons, weight trains and walks miles. In her vegan trainers, obviously.

A friend has managed to produce a strapping 6ft 4 vegan DC. He doesn't look especially stunted to me.

I don't think running marathons particularly means anything regarding nutrition, DH eats a load of crap food and still manages 2 marathons a month.

Lots of cheap shoes aren't leather anyway, sure some that are branded vegan cost more due to the branding but it's also sometimes the glue etc as well as the main material. Lots of people pay over the odds for a parricular brand, not sure why some find it so weird that at times that applies to vegans too.

It is weird on here how critical and ignorant many are about a vegan diet, especially as the thread didn't even mention food! Seemingly someone on a vegan diet must eat a perfectly balanced and nutritious diet whereas many non vegans eat a tonne of crap with little nutrients. Why the higher standards? Defensiveness? Plenty of people don't get their RDAs, a lot of vegans are more aware and make more of an effort tbh.

Just resurrecting this thread to mention
Many plastic shoes are not actually vegan as they contain glue.
Vegan shoes should not.
This makes the real vegan shoes a bit pricier.
