Should some songs never be sung again?

I was at a social event where there was various songs which we were singing along to. One of which was Delilah. Obviously the content is abhorrent, but its a banger of a tune, and something that loads of people know. The day after, found an old playlist with a bunch of Michael Jackson stuff on. AIBU to think it is ok to sing along to a song with a good tune even if the content or artist is problematic?

Michael Jackson was found not guilty, Jimmy Saville was never arrested or charged as his crimes only came to public light after his death. If you think Jackson was guilty that's your opinion not a fact because the fact was he was found not guilty in a court of law.

So was OJ Simpson found Not Guilty. You honestly think OJ didn't kill his ex? Child sexual abuse cases are notoriously difficult to prosecute when it's strangers, let alone rich and famous people. Men especially don't lie about things like this, they don't even want to admit it to themselves (speaking as the daughter of a man abused by a priest).

On a lighter note, a Bacharach song by Jack Jones, big hit in the sixties, "Wives And Lovers" :
"Hey, little girl, comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try any more
For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love."

I always think of the movie The 1st Wives Club when I read/hear those lyrics.

Mike Jagger and Bowie both confessed to having sex with 13 year old groupies. Chrissie Hynde defended it because she claims it was what the girls wanted. There was drinking and drug taking. Both were given to the girls. When you consider how Polanski was pursued (I'm not saying that is wrong) yet so many others ignored, the stuff around it being because he is Jewish does ring true.

You're missing the point though. Jagger's and Bowie's girls may have wanted it but Polanski's girl sure did not. She was RAPED. It wasn't consentual.

I've always been a bit uncomfortable with the "come on Eileen" lyrics
Why? I never thought it was sung ( character wise) by an older creepy bloke but by a peer of 'Eileen'

Me too. I loved it when it came out. I didn't find it at all creepy.

A 13 year old can't give consent, they were also raped.

But isn't the whole point of this song to make you initially think it's a romantic song until you realise Clair is little girl? It's whole intention is to play with the listener!

I've never liked Gilbert O'Sullivan or his lyrics but this song is quite innocent. A Woman's Place is in the Home is much worse.

I'm aware of that but there there is a difference between that, and a girl being violently anally raped. A big difference. What Polanski did when he violently attacked that girl was traumatic.

We don't know how the other girls felt, pressured? Drugged? Drunk? We don't know how it affected them afterwards when they realised how they had been used and abused. Doesn't lessen what Polanski did but it shouldn't mean we give the others a pass. Laws are there for a reason.

If someone is found guilty in a court of law, you have to abide by it, otherwise what’s the point of the justice system. Whether or not you think Jackson, or OJ were guilty is of no consequence because the jury had access to all the facts when they made their decision. The general public didn’t.

pam290358 · 02/02/2023 08:27

Welsh rugby have banned fans from singing Delilah at matches. Don’t know how they’re going to enforce that one.

IdidntshagHarry · 02/02/2023 10:14

Gary Glitter songs, Rolf Harris, other various men that have then gone on to commit crimes against children there are a few I don't recall the names.

As to “Clare” I think he’s meant to be her Dad or her uncle or something. It’s a bit sick that people think otherwise. You might as well get offended by “ Save all your kisses for me” by Brotherhood of Man.

“Clare” was his manager’s daughter that he used to babysit.

Neither his manager nor “Clare” ever had any issues with the song.

When you consider how many songs really are about sex with underage girls or unwilling women, it's an understandable mistake to make.

ScribblingPixie · 02/02/2023 11:17

it's an understandable mistake to make

Only if you don't listen til the last verse.

Clair
I've told you before
Don't you dare
Get back into bed
Can't you see that it's late
No you can't have a drink
Oh all right then
But wait just a minute
While I, in an effort to babysit
Catch up on my breath
What there is left of it
You can be murder
At this hour of the day
But in the morning the sun
Will see my lifetime away
Oh, Clair

Delilah and young girl. Vile

EsmeSusanOgg · 02/02/2023 12:02

Songs where royalties would go to awful people who are still alive. Thinking Lost Prophets (where the one band member is a paedo), Gary Glitter etc.

In Young Girl she's made him think she's older than he is and he's telling her to go

He specifically says her love is ‘out of line’ snd she’d ‘just a baby.’ He’s saying she’s much too young! To me I saw it more as a man who realises a teenager has a crush on him and is saying it’s not right.

So a 13 year old can consent after being given alcohol and drugs by men in their 30's? You're missing the point that it was grooming and exploitation. I'm staggered that you think a 13 year old girl should be welcome at a party with fully adult men and it's then ok for the men to have sex with them.

IceyDicey · 02/02/2023 13:21

Delilah has a great tune and chorus, the words in the verses should be changed, if it was racist or against men it would have never seen daylight.

I found your comment abhorrent because you insinuate Polanski was "pursued" when that is an absolute lie, so you are suggesting the girl wanted it. She DID NOT 'pursue' him, not at all! She was thrown at him by her mum, she was then drugged and violently anally raped.

I think that is different from 13 year old girls 'throwing themselves' at someone. BOTH are wrong, however the girl in the Polanski case a) never pursued him, b) was drugged, and c) was violently anally raped.

With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you're old enough
To give me love
And now it hurts to know the truth

I take it as she's made him think she's older than she is and he's saying she's too young. I think we're both taking it the same way?

lollipoprainbow · 02/02/2023 13:30

Clair always up on these posts. An entirely innocent song that people want to taint with their suspicious minds.

Yes that’s what I meant. Like he isn’t some grotesque man leering after young girls - he’s met a girl who led him to believe she was older, then once he discovers she isn’t he’s saying it’s ‘out of line’ and she is ‘just a baby.’ Even in the song he is saying it’s not right, so I can’t see why it’s so bad.
