Help sorry I know this isn't AIBU but traffic

Tonight literally 15 mins ago so 00:40 ish I was driving home about a 10 minute journey on a road with a 60mph limit.
I was doing about 80. Yes I know I was in the wrong please dont bash me.
Then I got to my turning, turned in, and realise there was a police car behind me pretty much the whole time.
Now I'm freaking out because I know I was speeding and I know they were behind me. But they could have pulled me over and didn't, didn't even flash me?
I don't have any points, never paid any fine, never taken a speed awareness course.
Has anyone ever had a similar experience, if so did it end in a ticket or not?
Very worried, please be kind I know I was in the wrong

This 'be kind' shite is beyond annoying.

GoodChat · 31/01/2023 09:42

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl it happens. My sister was hit by another driver speeding out of a junction on an otherwise empty dual carriageway and now has a life limiting disability, so you speed like a twat if you want to, if you're happy to take the risk of destroying someone else's life.

Just because it hasn't happened this time doesn't mean OP is a good or cautious driver. She's proven she's not. If someone had pulled out in front of her she wouldn't have had time to react.

Many cyclists don’t wear high-vis. Many do. If you don’t take responsibility for your own safety you only have yourself to blame if you get hit. Not quite the same as a badger is it.

What a nasty thing to say.

Nobody deserves to get hit by a car.

They do if they are wearing all black, on the actual road late at night on a 60mph road.

You can’t just take NO responsibility for your safety - to the point where you’re purposefully putting yourself in a dangerous situation - and moan when it all goes wrong.

That like me jumping into the middle of the ocean with no flotation aids and saying “Huh - I don’t deserve to struggle to swim in the middle of the sea.

Butchyrestingface · 31/01/2023 09:38

*And crying about it constantly or making twatty comments won’t make me give a shit or feel bad, so I’m not sure what your point is actually in persistently mentioning it.

I haven't "persistently" mentioned it.

Are you expecting an apology or something?

Definitely not. You seem quite pleased with yourself if anything.

Nah I just don’t give a shit and that seems to bother you

Theluggage15 · 31/01/2023 09:44

I don’t understand why, if the police are so concerned about dangerous speeding they didn’t pull you over then and there instead of following you, presumably speeding themselves, for about 10 minutes which is a very long way at 80mph.

Not sure what you're wittering on about now.

They didn't do either. She never got pulled over.

Well honestly I don't know what your worried about unless your dependant on your licence having zero points

It's a fine and points or 100 odd quid on a speed awareness course and no points..
It's not a big deal...

Though, maybe try not speeding 🤦‍♂️

Catspyjamas17 · 31/01/2023 09:48

Hiring a car. Getting insurance.

No insurance company is going to refuse you insurance for 3 points. It'll just be slightly more expensive.

What happened with the insurance claim? Im hoping your sister got some private healthcare as a result....

Speed would not have been the cause of the accident Though.

Madeintowerhamlets · 31/01/2023 09:50

I think you SHOULD do a speed awareness course as it might change the way you think. And I say that as someone that has done a speed awareness course. I live in a London borough that is very hot on speeding cameras & fines. I was doing 23mph in a 20 zone & at the time I was annoyed as I was only slightly over & hardly ever go over the speed limit. In fact it was idiots driving right up my rear that often made me speed up. However since I’ve done the course I’ve realised it is really not worth it & I’m not risking a ticket because some knob near behind wants me to drive faster.

Exactly!

When we have hired cars in recent years though only I could as I have 0 points whereas DH has 3 and many places just won’t hire to people who have points!

Its a rarity though really, having to hire a car, for most people

WeekendInTheBoondocks · 31/01/2023 09:52

speedy49 · 31/01/2023 01:24

Of course I knew there was a car behind me, but when it's dark you can't tell what colour it is because of the headlights facing you. It was only when we got to nearish home with lots of streetlights I saw it was yellow and blue.

And I do not believe that any of you have never ever broken the speed limit

Well, there is breaking the speed limit and breaking speed limit. Occasionally I go 33 on a 30, by mistake and I correct myself, but going 80 in a 60 is 20 mph over the speed limit, that’s over the speed limit of a motorway, let alone the national speed limit on a single carriage road. 80 is simply ridiculously fast. If you were to be in an accident at 80 mph, both you and the driver of the other car would be seriously injured, if not killed.

NalaNana · 31/01/2023 09:53

I think you'll be fine as they didn't pull you over then and there. I was followed by a police car in the dark once (doing 20 over the speed limit too) and didn't realise as there was no street lighting. They pulled me over for speeding and said they could issue me with points/fine but essentially couldn't be arsed with the process. To be honest I think they just wanted to check I wasn't drunk or anything!

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 31/01/2023 09:53

In fact it was idiots driving right up my rear that often made me speed up.

The only action ever in this case is to slow down. If they hit you going slow it won’t cause as much damage if they hit you going fast.

Im petty though and I revel in going really slow for cars who start to tailgate me! But I also do it for my own safety

lieselotte · 31/01/2023 09:53

I agree. Pedestrians need to stop wearing black coats in the winter as well (and I am one of them -well, dark purple and navy!). Everyone should be wearing some form of hi-vis.

GoodChat · 31/01/2023 09:54

@Icedlatteplease nothing. Other party got 3 points for dangerous driving and the car was a write off but nothing else got paid out. It was pretty shocking, in all honesty.

Speed wasn't the cause of the accident but it was the cause of the level of injury.

Kanaloa · 31/01/2023 09:54

Plus there’s the fact that it wasn’t a mistake. The occasional mistake (while unacceptable) is understandable because we’re just humans. But op (although she says she was wrong) didn’t make a mistake. She didn’t misunderstand the speed limit or have a broken speedometer or only realise afterwards etc. She decided 60 was too slow and she wanted to illegally drive 20 mph faster, and now she wants people to ‘be kind’ because she’s worried her decision might come back to bite her.

Kanaloa · 31/01/2023 09:55

Like it is very much implied that op is not sorry for driving illegally, and that she does not plan on changing her ways. She just wants to know if she might get away with it.

Because she hasn’t posted a grovelling apology to MN? She obviously is sorry but the question was around the logistics of issuing a fine and points. Why does she need to go into detail about how she definitely regrets it? Why do you even need that from the OP?

lieselotte · 31/01/2023 09:57

Germany has no mandatory speed limits, even their recommended speed limit is 10 mph higher than our mandatory

This is a myth - a lot of German motorways DO have speed limits.

And those that don't, don't have accidents, just fatalities.

Shade17 · 31/01/2023 09:58

Driving at 80 is ‘off the scale insane’ on a single carriageway road in the dark with no street lighting.

I think you’re a little naive there when it comes to speeds that people actually do. I’d put ‘off the scale insane’ at more like 150mph. I keep my high speed shenanigans for the track and Germany these days but in my younger, less law abiding days would regularly see those kind of speeds. I’d say I’ve been lucky to get away with some of the crazy things I’ve done.

AtomicRitual · 31/01/2023 09:58

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 31/01/2023 09:34

On the speed awareness course I was surprised by how many people denied they were speeding or made excuses. Or moaned about the existence of the speed camera van. “I didn’t see it in time”. That’s the whole point 😂 “The van was hiding” - oh you couldn’t have been speeding then 🤣

It’s the same people who moan about getting a parking ticket. Don’t park over your time and you won’t get a ticket.

So many people say how good speed awareness courses are - I'd like to go on one, but don't really want to get caught speeding to do so!

I got a parking ticket yesterday. Knew I'd overstayed the allowed time when I got back to my car, so expected it and paid it this morning. It was a private car park that so many people bleat on about it not being valid, etc, but ultimately I knew when I parked there that it had a two hour limit and I stayed 2.5 hours, so the ticket was inevitable. I'd agreed to that risk when I parked there. It was late at night and £50 was actually more preferable than having to park further away and get public transport!

In terms of speeding, I've never sped off the motorway. We've got one road near us where a 60 reduces to a 30. I swear I must be the only person that slows down to 30 before the sign. The amount of people I've had tailgating me is ridiculous.

I have sped on motorways in the past, but 80 is my limit. Now I'm getting older I can't be bothered with that either. I'm not in that much of a hurry or going that far that 10mph is going to get me anywhere significantly quicker.

If I do ever get caught speeding I'll just accept it was because I was reckless and deserve the consequences.

"Don't do the crime if you can't face the time"!

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 31/01/2023 09:59

Also on MN if anyone ever admits to speeding it’s ALWAYS ‘33 in a 30’. Followed by some excuse or insistence it’s the only time they’ve ever sped.
