Help sorry I know this isn't AIBU but traffic

Tonight literally 15 mins ago so 00:40 ish I was driving home about a 10 minute journey on a road with a 60mph limit.
I was doing about 80. Yes I know I was in the wrong please dont bash me.
Then I got to my turning, turned in, and realise there was a police car behind me pretty much the whole time.
Now I'm freaking out because I know I was speeding and I know they were behind me. But they could have pulled me over and didn't, didn't even flash me?
I don't have any points, never paid any fine, never taken a speed awareness course.
Has anyone ever had a similar experience, if so did it end in a ticket or not?
Very worried, please be kind I know I was in the wrong

Because she hasn’t posted a grovelling apology to MN? She obviously is sorry but the question was around the logistics of issuing a fine and points. Why does she need to go into detail about how she definitely regrets it? Why do you even need that from the OP?

How is she ‘obviously sorry?’ She says ‘I was doing 80, please be kind.’ Just like the rest of the post, all she is interested in is not facing any consequences of her action.

And I don’t need or want a groveling apology. But I also don’t need it want to be ‘kind’ (ie just shut up) to someone who is happy to break the law but wants sympathy and babying when they might face the very clear and obvious consequences of their behaviour.

GoodChat · 31/01/2023 09:54

@Icedlatteplease nothing. Other party got 3 points for dangerous driving and the car was a write off but nothing else got paid out. It was pretty shocking, in all honesty.

Speed wasn't the cause of the accident but it was the cause of the level of injury.

Your sisters insurance company was slacking. A debilitating accident with life long injuries and a dangerous driving conviction should have been a significant payout (it would have automatically been seen to the large loss team) was the other party uninsured? If it wasn't too long ago it may not be too late to make a claim

AtomicRitual · 31/01/2023 09:59

Back to OP's original question though. It will likely depend on what type of police car it was.

If it was a traffic car with ANPR and cameras, then yes, you may very well get a ticket later.

Local beat car - unlikely to have the tech to monitor your speed.

Ultimately, if they were keeping pace with you, then there's a good chance of a ticket I think.

LakeTiticaca · 31/01/2023 09:59

Of course all mumsnetters always, but always drive at tthe speed limit

until they dont........

GoodChat · 31/01/2023 10:01

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 31/01/2023 09:59

Also on MN if anyone ever admits to speeding it’s ALWAYS ‘33 in a 30’. Followed by some excuse or insistence it’s the only time they’ve ever sped.

I don't agree with anything else you've said but this made me laugh because it's so true

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 31/01/2023 10:02

@AtomicRitual i really enjoyed my speed awareness course! I learned so much that was actually useful and it was a non judgmental environment. I now don’t need to see a sign to know the speed limit anywhere, I can tell from the road layout/lights/central reserve thanks to what I learnt on the course.

I also had mine when I was on maternity leave and I remember how nice it was to have a day out away from blending food, breastfeeding and navigating nap time 😂

If they caught you, you won't qualify for a speed awareness course because you did 20 more than was allowed.

Would be surprised if the majority of people don’t observe speed limits. I do 🤷‍♀️

3 years you have to make a claim

Insideallday · 31/01/2023 10:04

Just don’t drive over the limit from now on and you won’t be worried about getting a ticket

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 31/01/2023 10:08

You can’t just take NO responsibility for your safety - to the point where you’re purposefully putting yourself in a dangerous situation - and moan when it all goes wrong.

I just don't agree that anyone deserves to be hit by a car just because they're not wearing hi-vis.

Of course they should wear it - but drivers should also be anticipating hazards and driving accordingly. As a driver you can't just plough into someone and say it's their fault you killed them.

Also regardless of whether your hazard is a person, a deer or a broken down car, you'll still crash and possibly total your own car and potentially get done for dangerous driving 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ariela · 31/01/2023 10:10

Embrace the fact that if you were speeding, with any luck you'll be within the limits to take a speed awareness course. These are so useful in educating the public about the dangers of speeding, how to be more aware of the speed limits and your speed etc.

Meanwhile, given the price of fuel, it's worth considering why you were going that fast. Far, far more economical to drive more gently, at a lower speed.

CosyFanTucci · 31/01/2023 10:11

It’s also the sense of entitlement of speeding drivers that gets up people’s noses, that they’re somehow special or know better so rules don’t apply to them.

You don’t get arrested for dangerous driving for hitting a deer FFS.

And you can drive by “anticipating hazards and driving accordingly” and still not see someone who is essentially camouflaged and behaving dangerously. Hitting them is not always your fault, and thankfully the law does exercise common sense. We aren’t expected to always drive around in a state of terror just in case some fuckwit with no Road sense is in the middle of the road suddenly.

But if you do wander out on a fast road late at night wearing all black and walking on the actual road, what do you expect? You’re an idiot and it is your fault if you get hit

GoodChat · 31/01/2023 10:14

Thanks for the info @Icedlatteplease - I'll mention it Smile

You just said it's not always the drivers fault and common sense bla bla - now you say it's the pedestrian's fault? And they're an idiot?

You can reasonably expect as a pedestrian that a driver isn't skidding up the verge of the road. If you are, then you are 100% at fault for hitting a pedestrian even if they're in all black.

legendyna · 31/01/2023 10:18

As a driver mowing down a pedestrian with your poor driving, you're an idiot and what do you expect when you're in court, more like.

Yea, they are an idiot and it’s their fault if they get hit.

I’m talking about someone who thought it was fine for pedestrians to walk on the carriageway late at night if there’s no pavement.

Please do. It should be a slam dunk case. Anyone handling it should be looking at any equipment necessary going forward, any lose of earnings, private physio and or osteopathy, transport to and from anywhere or hire car until well enough/ new car obtained, adapt. Expect whoever handles the claim to recommend obtaining private medical reports. Your sister's insurance company would normally handle it. Sometimes in cases like your sisters they might send it to a no win no fee firm they have a relationship with.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 31/01/2023 10:22

Which is why I said ‘walking on the actual road’

Speeding threads always bring out the worst on here
I received a speeding fine recently in the post after driving somewhere (not local) completely unfamiliar to me
I had been dropping DP off to collect a vehicle for his new job and he had driven there and I drove back
This meant I wasn’t sure who was driving at the time of the offence so checked the pictures they give you a link to online
unfortunately it was me - they also give you a film clip which I watched out of curiosity - wish I hadn’t
The film showed me driving carefully and within the speed limit - apart from for under one second when I must have taken my eye off the speedo probably because I was looking for directions
I certainly didn’t see a camera or speed van as if I had I would’ve been pretty stupid to speed up briefly for the single second it captured the image

I am finding it hard to understand how anyone can drive over the speed limit for under a second and no more. Is that even possible? I'm not being funny, it's just I would have thought that reaching the speed and then decelerating from it would take longer than a split second.

But if you do wander out on a fast road late at night wearing all black and walking on the actual road, what do you expect? You’re an idiot and it is your fault if you get hit

I would expect to be able to walk safely on the verge without a driver smashing into me 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really don't think that's too much to ask for 🤣

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 31/01/2023 10:32

Well, it depends what other damage you do in the process of smashing your car into one 🤷🏻‍♀️

I doubt that happens as often as bad drivers go at 20+ miles over the limit.

Yeah exactly, sometimes you actually have no choice and let's not pretend like any of us carry a high vis best in our handbag, alright.

Driver should be driving in the road, not skimming hedgerows
