Help sorry I know this isn't AIBU but traffic

Tonight literally 15 mins ago so 00:40 ish I was driving home about a 10 minute journey on a road with a 60mph limit.
I was doing about 80. Yes I know I was in the wrong please dont bash me.
Then I got to my turning, turned in, and realise there was a police car behind me pretty much the whole time.
Now I'm freaking out because I know I was speeding and I know they were behind me. But they could have pulled me over and didn't, didn't even flash me?
I don't have any points, never paid any fine, never taken a speed awareness course.
Has anyone ever had a similar experience, if so did it end in a ticket or not?
Very worried, please be kind I know I was in the wrong

You won't get a ticket. You're fine. Take it as a lesson though, please.

Hups · 31/01/2023 04:59

I would think that they would have pulled you over at the time, rather than send a fine via the post op.
I wouldn't worry about it too much.

ThreeblackCats · 31/01/2023 05:05

If you don’t get a fine I hope you learned a lesson. That being… Watch your speed. At least you didn’t kill anyone this time. Next time you might not be so lucky.

For what it’s worth, I had similar, pulled off the motorway, was speeding as I approached the town. £60 fine. I was slowing down, but just not fast enough.

Suzi888 · 31/01/2023 05:16

Some people’s jobs mean they lose their job if they get caught speeding. So I wouldn’t take the moral high ground that everyone breaks the law.

You were going too fast for a speed awareness course. If your slightly over the limit you can take the course and pay a fine or pay a fine/percentage of your earnings and incur the points for doing so much as 1 mile over the limit. It’s up to the police if they issue you a letter or not.

If the police just followed you I don’t think they’ll issue you a letter, as although it’s clear you were breaking the law they’ve no evidence how fast you were going.

If you do get stopped I wouldn’t roll out “be kind”.

With respect, this thread isn't about how bad of a crime (legally or morally) speeding is. It was about whether others have had a similar experience and what the outcome was.

Thanks to those who have actually replied with something helpful 🙏🏼

If you are lucky you will get the option of a speed awareness course where you will learn the impact of going over the speed limit and how just a few miles slower can mean the difference between life and death for you and others and hopefully you will slow down and drive more reasonably.

Otherwise you might get points on your licence or even court if you were going more than a certain percentage over the speed limit.

Another day though, if your speeding killed someone, it could be prison so being followed by a police car was not too bad an option today.

Why did you need to get home so quickly?

maybeinanoter86 · 31/01/2023 05:32

Your fine honestly op they would of pulled you over there and then

Sorrynotsorry2 · 31/01/2023 05:42

Out of interest . Would you drive 50mph in a 30 mph zone?

Sally090807 · 31/01/2023 05:44

You say you were travelling “about 80” in a 60 mph zone, would you travel at 50mph in a 30 zone?
If all drivers slowed down a little, were more patient and courteous on the roads there wouldn’t be so many accidents.

LadyOfTheFliessssss · 31/01/2023 05:48

You won't get a ticket.

I was pulled over for doing 60 in a 40 and just got a telling off. He told me he only pulled me over to check I wasn't drunk.

araiwa · 31/01/2023 05:51

If they didn't pull you over, nowt to worry about with regards to getting a ticket

Pinkpig1 · 31/01/2023 05:53

Don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine

Bingbangbongbash · 31/01/2023 05:54

You sound like a terrible driver. Be more aware and stop speeding. It kills people - and often not the driver. Selfish and stupid. I hope you get prosecuted.

Catspyjamas17 · 31/01/2023 05:55

I wouldn't expect a ticket but please take it as notice to slow the fuck down. Single carriageway roads with a 60mph limit can be some of the most dangerous roads in the country, doing 80mph on one beggars belief. You certainly will find yourself getting points on your licence or on a speed awareness course at some point soon, and it would be very easy to lose your licence quickly. More seriously you are risking injuring or killing yourself and others.

liveforsummer · 31/01/2023 05:56

Well in over 25 years of driving I've never heard of a police car mounted cam that issues speeding tickets by following you. I will stand corrected if anyone here has actually received a ticket this way but it doesn't sound like they have. I'd expect them to have pulled you over. If your Speedo is anything like mine it's probably quite far out anyway and over estimates you. Sounds like the car was also travelling at a similar speed to have caught up and followed you in the first place. Was it your average police car or a traffic police vehicle (round here they have big swanky Volvos rather than Ford Focus for example).

PurpleFlower1983 · 31/01/2023 06:07

I think you will be fine as they would have pulled you over at the time. Learn from this though, 20mph over the speed limit is really shitty behaviour.

Oblomov22 · 31/01/2023 06:10

It's really easy to speed. I see people speeding every day on 20,30,40 roads, 60 roads. 80 on a motorway. It's easy to do above 34 on a 30 road.

TerfOnATrain · 31/01/2023 06:16

You’ll probably get a speed awareness course letter OP. It’s unlikely you will be up before the magistrates if that’s what is worrying you.

TerfOnATrain · 31/01/2023 06:18

Posted too soon, I meant to add - if they’ve evidenced you.

they would very likely have pulled you over unless they had bigger fish to fry that night.

It’s easy to speed when you don’t think or care about the consequences.

It’s easy to speed when you decide to put other road users at risk of maiming or death.

It’s easy to speed when you don’t care about the most vulnerable road users like children and elderly pedestrians.

It’s easy to speed when you think your time is more important than other people’s safety.

It’s easy to speed when you think you’re a better driver than everyone else - even though you don’t have the brains to spot a police car.

It’s easy to speed until you kill someone.

If she does get a letter, she probably won't be entitled to a speed awareness course because of how far over the limit she was.

DH was caught speeding a couple of years ago and if you were more than a certain amount over the limit it was straight to a fine and points. I can't remember the cut off for a court appearance though.

Merrymouse · 31/01/2023 06:19

As others have said they need specific equipment to issue a speeding ticket.

Police can obviously pull you over for driving dangerously, but that didn’t happen here.

SecretSophie · 31/01/2023 06:24

Another poster requiring all replies to "be kind" , or in other words agree with OP.

You post, you get replies. Stop trying to control that.

StalkedByASpider · 31/01/2023 06:27

Hey OP. I think it's really easy to unconsciously drive a bit faster very late at night when there's no-one else on the road and you're just trying to get home. It's not ideal but it's nothing like doing 50 in a 30 when there are kids around or the roads are busy.

I really, really don't think you'll hear any more. They'd have pulled you over on the spot, and also breathalysed you (probably but not definitely) for driving fast late at night.

But definitely view it as a lucky escape and try to keep an eye on your speedometer when it's late. I have to focus to make sure I don't speed. I find when it's very late, the roads are empty and I'm thinking about stuff as I drive, it's easy for the speed to creep up. So maybe just try to make an extra effort to stick to the limit - you don't want this kind of scare again as next time it could be a ticket and points.

I'm pretty sure you'll be OK.

It's easy to run someone over if you're that oblivious to what you're doing, too.
