To think mixed sex toilet provision has proven to be a flop?

Now been a few years since mixed sex toilets have been widely available in all kinds of public spaces from schools to offices to theatres. The water has been tested. AIBU to think the results have been dismal?

I'm prompted to post this as my Y7 boy holds on all day at school as the toilets are filthy. His friend has seen a girl sitting on a toilet. My younger daughter won't use the toilets in a burger chain because adult men have used it or may come in behind her. I had the same experience in a pizza chain restaurant (one neutral, one disabled, one male I kid you not). Art centre I use had one mixed sex toilet that is filthy and everyone uses the public toilets outside on the street that are separate sex still.

I'm told mixed sex toilets are now widespread in secondary schools. How is that being received? Haven't some schools reverted?

Seems to me a major issue is human biology. Men find urinals easier than toilets. Women need sit down facilities and sinks to wash in private.

I've used a local unisex freestanding public toilet that washes down *everything" after every use. Numerous unisex toilets on public transport. Lots of public "adult+ child" toilets, and disabled toilets , both open to all genders. They were all clean and fresh. No floaters/urine puddles/ blood/vomit/ poo smears on seat/splashed walls.

Our home has two bathrooms used by men and women (all ages) and so do my offsprings homes. All spotless.

They should be banned outright in public spaces, workplaces, schools and the like. The only time a woman should have to use a toilet that a man has used should be in a private home.

This is bonkers. How exactly do you expect that to work on planes and trains, in tiny coffee shops where there is only room for one toilet etc?

heathspeedwell · 28/01/2023 12:53

I hate single sex toilets. There are far too many dodgy men around who 'accidentally' leave the door open so they can turn round and flash their dicks at women and girls.

It happened to me twice last year. Luckily the second time DH was outside the cubicles and I told him what happened just as the dick-swinger was coming out so DH called the police.

The last thing we should be doing is making it easier for dodgy men to get a taste for flashing. As well all know from the tragic Sarah Everard murder, predatory men can start off with indecent exposure and then escalate their behaviour.

heathspeedwell · 28/01/2023 12:56

Obviously that should say mixed-sex toilets!

ArtVandalay · 28/01/2023 12:56

I’ve taught my sons (and husband!) that you only stand up to piss if there is a urinal.

It’s utterly minging imo for men to stand and piss into a domestic loo. When my sons’ mates have been here (and our male friends) the downstairs loo will have piss on the seat, floor and even the adjacent radiator! No wonder so many of our friends’ downstairs loos have a smell of stale piss. It’s just foul and unnecessary.

@BlooDeBloop I do actually have a husband and a son. As well as a daughter.
Any cleaner will tell you that there are (disappointingly) a large number of girls and women who leave the toilet in a disgusting state.

I am a cleaner, on occasion the womens is disgusting. However every day the mens is disgusting and the stench worse.
I prop open doors, I use bleach, I pour products down the sink as it's not unknown for the men to piss in the sink, I have on more than one occasion with more than one man, had them walk in despite knowing I am in there and they start wanking. Women dont do that to me.

Mixed sex is a fucking awful idea, it should never have started, it should be stopped right now. Women are entitled to a space away from men. I require law to be made that this can never happen again. This is my hill. No more mixed sex when its necessary. That means, toilets, sports, hospital wards, prisons etc.

This with bells on! As I said on another thread I've had had to remove used sanitary towels from walls and wee and poo from everywhere. That comment was ignored among the 'men are grim' chorus

Sux2buthen · 28/01/2023 12:59

@BlooDeBloop toilet carpet 😱😱

ChaToilLeam · 28/01/2023 13:05

Everyone seems to hate them, apart from a small number of people with dubious agendas.

I wonder why. 🤔

Planes and trains have more than one toilet. Tiny coffee shops should either have two toilets or none at all.

Many of whom are simultaneously privileged enough /in positions where they won't ever have to use them. Amazing what you can advocate for when you simply have to open /advertise the the building not use it . Or simply use it in a closed to the public private function with selected people capacity. Or male so it simply doesn't impact you the same way.

If they had to spend a month in a prison or on a hospital ward when at their most vulnerable.. a public hospital understaffed and no private rooms available not a private one. How many would actually be OK with it.

PaddyDingDong · 28/01/2023 08:32

I think it's a gross idea but both men and women are gross. And not forgetting certain cultures where they stand on the toilet seat with shoes on 🤢 and squat poo into it. Then we have to sit on that seat after. In short- generally other people do gross things and are just gross and ruin public toilets. Be that male or female. The mixed sex/gender thing doesn't bother me really but then I wouldn't feel vulnerable sharing a space with men generally, but people just being gross in the toilets does bother me. Sorry for saying gross so much.

To be frank, sitting in a public loo seat is so vile I can't imagine anyone does it. They get pissed in all the time.

Your version of attending a football match is so far removed from any I have attended (a lot) that for me it makes me not believe the rest of your "experiences".

Really? Well obviously that works both ways

As well as being a bit of a weird thing to say

Planes and trains do have more than one toilet. What do you do when one gets blocked or broken?

As for the cafe, that means you either expect them to somehow manipulate the laws of physics and fit two toilets into the space of one, or you expect the staff to not need the bathroom all day.

I'd be interested to know as well how you expect this to work in hotels, holiday cottages etc..

SpudleyLass · 28/01/2023 13:16

Bamboozle123 · 28/01/2023 12:42

You aren't sharing toilets with them. You still have a private toilet cubicle.

It'd be more accurate to say you're sharing a sink, how scary!

What next? Single sex car parks, buses, train station waiting rooms?

I don't like floor to ceiling cubicles, I'm claustrophobic! What if I get stuck in or have a medical emergency? What it the attacker just waits outside?

I was also sexually assaulted on a bus so you jest about that, but it just underscores my feelings on this for me.

Toilets are not public transport, I will not be in a state of partial undress.

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 28/01/2023 13:23

I was at a theatre yesterday and they've recently made the ladies loos unisex (didn't check the mens)

I find it infuriating as it cuts the amount of toilets women can use even further, there wasn't enough provision for women in these places in the first place!

Lockheart · 28/01/2023 13:16

I wouldn't expect them to put two toilets in hotel rooms etc. Those are short-term private homes.

Jewel1968 · 28/01/2023 13:44

I don't hate them. I don't mind them BUT I do think if some people feel unsafe in them there should be a single sex one available. I do wonder if men's behaviour around toilets is modified a bit by having to share with women as my work gender neutral toilets are ok cleanliness wise.

So in the interests of ‘inclusion’, they have made the school day significantly harder and more miserable for the girls. Great

I would love to see the impact assessments. Its certainly not compatible with the protected categories of

religion- some are unable to share with males.

Sex- mixed sex provision is more dangerous for girls.

Disability- many who would be able to use regular facilities as they don't need the space for a wheelchair/mobility aid will not be able to use them as they may perhaps need the comfort/knowledge that they will be seen if they collapse/pass out under the gaps in the doors. All these students who can longer use these facilities as if they have an asthma attack or need their epi pen or fall sick or have an epileptic fit will now have to tie up the accessible toilet as theres an alarm which means it will be harder for the disabled students who have no choice but to need the accessible.

Id even go as far to say it much surely clash with pregnancy/maternity too. Because any school girl who falls pregnant and has issues or has a.miscarriage or preterm labour which has the potential to be very serious if they haemorrhage badly will also no longer be seen under the gaps.

It excludes far more people than it includes for sure.

The EIA was dire. It acknowledged that it disadvantaged boys who preferred to use a urinal and girls who wanted/needed single sex and then claimed that was all mitigated by providing a tiny number of single sex toilets (which are in another school building).

No regard for safeguarding other than installation of intrusive and highly questionable cctv. They looked blank when I asked about security of the cctv system to prevent hacking.

It was very badly written, used gender jargon (‘gender’ assigned at birth) and was just a box ticking exercise to support the decision they had already made rather than actually considering the issues.

RichardBarrister · 28/01/2023 14:03

Do you make a habit of sharing hotel rooms and holiday cottages with strangers? Bizarre.

Helleofabore · 28/01/2023 14:05

I don’t know any one who likes the new toilet configuration to be fair.

I am sure some people do, but I suspect some go along with it all to be kind.

RichardBarrister · 28/01/2023 14:06

This. The first time I was forced to use a former female toilets that had been made mixed sex, I had to walk past men peeing with the door open. I now can’t jet my teenage daughters go in there alone.

Underhisi · 28/01/2023 14:10

Radar accessible toilets are usually clean so it is not a given that mixed sex toilets have to be disgusting.

Did you read the post I quoted? That poster asserted: The only time a woman should have to use a toilet that a man has used should be in a private home.

Men will use toilets in hotel rooms and holiday cottages. Which are not private homes. Therefore if you're going on holiday it is inevitable that you will use a toilet a strange man has used. Which renders the first post fairly bonkers in my opinion. Not to mention the many other occasions when shared facilities are necessary.

I'm all for single sex toilets. But I accept there are lots of quite valid occasions when they are not feasible, and I think expecting that women must always be able to use toilets that no man has ever darkened with his presence at any time is unrealistic at best, delusional at worst.
