Pints & breastfeeding

Was in the pub and this mum walks in. Really cute tiny baby. Got chatting and she told she me had baby 4 days earlier.
Frankly I was astonished she was in the pub and not comatose but good for her if she's happy and can manage. It wasn't a mad rave, but middle of the day, family pub and she clearly felt able.
Sat down, mum on next table. She then went onto order about a pint (at this point I was just in earshot).
But over the next two hours she ordered three more (all alcohol - I was earwigging) and drank them all while breastfeeding.
Ok, yes, I judged. I said nothing, of course. She seemed pretty steady, not slurring etc. Was I an arsehole? Do people do this?

@MimiandFifi

oh behave

she is being selfish
i don’t think she is
But so what if she
we’re all selfish sometimes even mums are
nothing wrong with it
that mum has just given birth she deserves a few pints

and how do you work out that she’s endangering her baby??

@MimiandFifi

there is nothing to suggest from OP’s posts that the baby was neglected whilst at the pub or thereafter is there?

🙄 I'm pretty sure her baby will be safe and well. I say good on her! I'd of done the same. But I drink in the house. Have a few glasses of wine. Nothing wrong with it.

If this is true, yes I would judge. My midwives told me not to eat grapes!

If you're going on what your midwives suggested, if they genuinely said to avoid grapes, I'd 100% be judging them harder and asking for midwives who knew what they were talking about.

You can eat grapes..

Snugglemonkey · 27/01/2023 22:09

I am breastfeeding and sometimes have a glass of wine or a beer.

I was out at a hotel 3 days after my baby was born for a family occasion. I was not drinking, but don't see being out and about as being a big deal.

Jesus, that is so nonsensical I wouldn't be able to trust a word they said and would ask for an alternative midwife.

I was still in the hospital when mine were 5 days old (both times) so I'd be secretly very jealous but drinking while breastfeeding isn't a concern as long as you're safe to hold the baby, and we all have very different tolerances for alcohol. It's not something I'd feel comfortable doing myself but others probably think I'm slightly neurotic when it comes to looking after babies (and they'd probably be right).

It is fine and safe to drink while breastfeeding. You obviously don't know shit so keep your beak out.

Why? In case they ferment into wine in your stomach?! 😂 I thought with readily available info online about what actually gets into breastmilk we could put an end to all the ridiculous myths and scaremongering. You would have to be dead from alcohol poisoning before your breastmilk was even labelled as alcoholic. It’s like people think food and liquid go in a tube straight from the mothers mouth to her breasts!

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 27/01/2023 22:19

Alcohol does not accumulate in your breastmilk. It has the same % as your blood. If you were drunk enough for it to register in your blood, you would literally die from alcohol poisoning. Mimififi you don't know what you are talking about so please refrain from commenting.

You have to have alcohol poisoning for it to affect baby ffs

She would literally have to be comatose on the brink of needing her stomach pumped for it to have any effect on the baby. If anything the only thing that might happen is a slightly worse hangover because breastfeeding dehydrates you enough without the alcohol - but that won't affect the baby.

Uh... Okay, either you've read up to date studies/guidelines and are ignoring them, or are just assuming your own opinion is gospel. Either way... 🤦‍♀️

Had the midwives all recently taken a hard blow to the head?

Was I an arsehole?

Yes. It’s none of your business.

Research how much alcohol gets in to breastmilk but the answer is an absolutely tiny amount.

It's still more than what should be there. A 4 day old baby shouldn't be ingesting alcohol.
