To ask how many times you name change

Just to be nosey

I have 10+ usernames (I think) and switch between some of them for different things, like different boards or just if the mood takes me, never to deliberately try and deceive.

I do it mainly so that if anyone IRL recognises a post, they can’t see my other posting history and confirm it’s me ie ‘pink fish has two dogs, a son who’s privately schooled’ etc it wouldn’t take long to put things together.

AIBU to name change often? Does anyone else change very regularly or usually stick to one?

OP posts:

I never have done, in the 13 years I've been on here. I don't really understand the point?

I thought sock puppeting meant posting on a thread under a different name with the same opinion to support your first user name used on the thread? So it depends.

Oh I genuinely don’t know tbh Sparklingbrook maybe it is?! I am happy to stand corrected!

As I said, it’s not done maliciously, I usually try and name change back to original nn, but it only usually happens in cases where a thread has gone on for ages and ages.

Maybe Mumsnet has a definition somewhere? I will have a search for their rules and regs.

Because someone can google 13 years worth of your posts in seconds. That's fine if they're all non-personal, but bits of personal info can be added together to make a fuller picture. If someone thinks they recognise just one of your posts, and may know you in real life, they can look back and see your full history.

How are the cervical fibroids by the way?

I guess it only really matters if it's reported. Usually it's when an AIBU starts and everyone unanimously says thet OP is BU and a poster suddenly pops up saying the OP is getting a hard time and backing them up that it's a bit suspicious. Grin

Since the security difficulties with this site, I name change very regularly, for reasons of safety and anonymity.

I always try and match my n-name to the thread, even if it means going back and changing to a previous name, but sometimes if a thread has gone on for a couple of days or more and it has become very long, I don’t always bother, usually because I am in a rush, cba, am using an old tablet with a sticky keyboard and it takes too long, or I forget!

I don’t think it qualifies as sock-puppeting does it when you use different names on the same thread, for the reasons given above, as long as you stick to the same argument. I thought sock-puppeting was when you name changed deliberately on the same thread in order to write opposing arguments, just for the sake of being provocative and malicious?

If you use 3 names on the same thread I think MNHQ gets a notification to investigate. If they can see its malicious they might take action, but otherwise they send you a reminder not to do it.

I’ve had a look Sparklingbrook and welliesmellie and this is all I can find although I thought there used to be some more comprehensive “talk rules”:

How do I change my user name?

Go to your MyMumsnet page – log in and then you can change your user name by typing in a new one where your old one is listed. Don't forget to save the changes. Please note that while we allow user name changes for anonymity, we don't allow changes for malicious purposes.

So not allowing name changes “for malicious purposes” ties in I reckon with Mumsnet policy of light moderation to allow conversation to flow while allowing HQ Towers room to intervene where necessary.

It's down to MN to decide if they think it has been done maliciously. That said from the topics I frequent at least it doesn't seem to be a massive problem, not as big a problem as namechanging to start goady threads or to bitchplop.

Blackandcreamticking77 · 05/02/2023 13:59

Thanks for this info though welliesmellie I haven’t ever used three names on the same thread as far as I can remember, and when I have used two it’s mainly been accidental, but that’s useful to know.

Blackandcreamticking77 · 05/02/2023 14:01

bitchplop? What on earth is that?

Dare I ask!? 😃🤣

I feel old!

Arriving on a thread to comment just once, a really bitchy mean comment then NC to go to the next thread, do the same there then repeat.

Thanks Sparkling , a phenomenon not entirely unknown on Mumsnet then 😃🥴

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/02/2023 14:16

I've been here for 13 years and probably have about 7 name changes through the years.

Bonjovispjs · 05/02/2023 14:18

Never, but I don't post much 🤷🏻‍♀️

VioletCharlotte · 05/02/2023 14:25

I very rarely name change, only if I want to post about something very personal, or something personal about my DC. Im sure if someone wanted to they could put my threads together and identify me quite easily, but I don't really post about anything I wouldn't share irl.

Theylastedwell · 05/02/2023 14:27

Usually every couple of posts, or even after every post. I don’t post a lot though

LimeTwists · 05/02/2023 15:16

A lot. I throw in the odd red herring about dates / ages / hobbies etc. Nosy people on here with nothing better to do like to sift through strangers’ past posts piecing things together (‘aren’t you the person who recently posted XYZ????) so there’s no way I’d give anyone on here a full picture of myself.
