Just to be nosey

I have 10+ usernames (I think) and switch between some of them for different things, like different boards or just if the mood takes me, never to deliberately try and deceive.

I do it mainly so that if anyone IRL recognises a post, they can’t see my other posting history and confirm it’s me ie ‘pink fish has two dogs, a son who’s privately schooled’ etc it wouldn’t take long to put things together.

AIBU to name change often? Does anyone else change very regularly or usually stick to one?

Approximately 1,000,000 times. I've been here since 2006.

I sometimes NC every day. I also sometimes revive old names. I always change details (ages and genders of children, for example) - not in a dickish way, but if, say, I had boy-girl-boy DC aged 9,7, and 5, I'd change it to two DDs aged 6 and 8. That kind of thing.

RaininSummer · 27/01/2023 20:30

Only done it once on here in over a decade after a doxxing threat.

BiggerBoyMadeMeDoit · 27/01/2023 20:09

They meant the time, not the year 😜

I did mean the year but can't believe that was taken seriously by the poster and they seemed personally affected. That says something.

Who was on mumsnet since 1813?! Not even mumsnet was on mumsnet then.🤣

Suzi888 · 27/01/2023 20:33

Never. No idea why you would need to.

ChristianAidy · 27/01/2023 20:34

I think you'd be mad not to.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2023 20:34

What are you trying to say @Testino ? Who is personally affected? 🤔

*Who? MNHQ or posters who do this?

If you mean posters who seem to know: Some people guess. Some trawl though posts and search for users they may think sound similar. Some will know information if the poster didn't change their name, so a search will reveal other posts in that name*.

P*osters. Thanks, makes sense. I find it a bit disconcerting.

Yes it is. Some people have so much time on their hands to go trawling through threads for a gotcha.

You also get the sinister ones who follow people around once they've had a few run-ins with you on a thread. So namechanging helps in different situations.

1813vintage · 27/01/2023 20:38

This is me. I've been here since 1813.

Will have to NC now as the photo is a bit outing.

I do quite often, I also re register every so often as well to start fresh again

Hawkins001 · 27/01/2023 20:40

Unless mumsnet ban me then I'll always use hawkins001

SomeareDeluded · 27/01/2023 20:40

Several name changes alternating between them on weekly basis.

I'd like to ask if others have trouble commenting on posts when starting a new paragraph. As this is what happens...as in new paragraph disappears down the page 🙄

Well well! Mumsnet really has been here long.

Love the name. I deserve some royalty payment BTW 🤑

This is my DH, but I don't like to say what his hobby is in case it's outing.

I understand your perspective, on the gotchas, but they wouldn't happen if posters were consistent with their ops

You really do. I might have a florin or two that I could send your way.

Every 6 months or so but I'm not a prolific poster and often alter details that don't change the substance of what I'm posting

Hawkins001 · 27/01/2023 20:40

We'll always know it's you because all you ever post is 'All the best OP' whether it's appropriate or not!

Letthecarhuntbegin · 27/01/2023 20:46

Regularly. Have probably gone through 100 names.

Wouldn't it be funny if there were only a handful of us on here, just changing names all the time 😂

Well true. Sometimes it's necessary.

Mamai90 · 27/01/2023 20:47

I have two others, one I never really use. It was my first user name but I feel its too close to my own name. Then another name that I rarely post under, I just use it if I'm talking about my kids.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/01/2023 20:48

Only fine it once. Should do it more often. As had some really nasty comments made about unrelated posts on other threads.

EveryLittleWish · 27/01/2023 20:48

I don’t switch between user names but in the past 4 years I’ve name changed 4 times . Sometimes I worry that if someone I know connects the dots they would realise it’s me which is highly unlikely, but just incase I name change .

Wallywobbles · 27/01/2023 20:49

About 3x. My kids know my username so I try to make it a rule to not post anything I don't want them to read.
