Just to be nosey

I have 10+ usernames (I think) and switch between some of them for different things, like different boards or just if the mood takes me, never to deliberately try and deceive.

I do it mainly so that if anyone IRL recognises a post, they can’t see my other posting history and confirm it’s me ie ‘pink fish has two dogs, a son who’s privately schooled’ etc it wouldn’t take long to put things together.

AIBU to name change often? Does anyone else change very regularly or usually stick to one?

OP posts:
Hollyhocksandtulips · 27/01/2023 20:49

A few times. I don't get the thing about. Or being recognised though ? If you post t
Something very outing then you might be recognised as being you by say the neighbour who has smashed into your loft for example. Or is it to avoid all your activity being linked? I guess we all take a chance if we post an identifying story / issue that our friend is on here ?

Letthecarhuntbegin · 27/01/2023 20:46

Regularly. Have probably gone through 100 names.

Wouldn't it be funny if there were only a handful of us on here, just changing names all the time 😂

I do wonder sometimes if that is the case.

But then I am astonished at things like colleagues casually mentioning things that happened to be trending on MN the previous night (without mentioning MN or even anything about a forum) and I remember how widely read it actually is.

You really do. I might have a florin or two that I could send your way.

Yabu.

Ask on Chat or Site Stuff.

SovietKitsch · 27/01/2023 20:51

Loads. Always searching for just the right name. Whenever I find one I’m really pleased with, I accidentally post something really outing and have to change it 🙄

I used this particular name for quite a long time, ditched it a couple of years ago, and now can’t remember why! I’m resurrecting it for a bit.

Somebatshitteryonhere · 27/01/2023 20:52

dew141 · 27/01/2023 19:20

I thought premium users could search and it pulled up all your previous usernames? At least, some posters seem to know what previous names posters posted under.

No, mnhq, have confirmed only they can see it. It isn’t a premium feature

SovietKitsch · 27/01/2023 20:53

I’m surprised at @ShowOfHands saying they’re a prolific name changer cos I’ve seen you in here for years. Really makes you think who might be hiding out in disguise! 😁

R4nd0mNumb3r5 · 27/01/2023 20:55

What I do find funny is when I get a particular poster constantly quoting me to argue with me, then I name change and they start agreeing with me instead (on a different thread), even though my overall views on life haven’t changed 😅

SunsetStrip · 27/01/2023 20:57

Every few months. I've changed in the past week. I don't even read user names, I just read what they've said. I'd certainly never track someone from thread to thread but I know some others do.

Hawkins001 · 27/01/2023 20:57

PifflePishAndPap · 27/01/2023 20:45

We'll always know it's you because all you ever post is 'All the best OP' whether it's appropriate or not!

To explain that one, sometimes it's usually my way to keep tabs on the thread, as I usually just see what I'm on vs what I'm watching, and sometimes I don't know what to advise the op, so in theory whatever the op prefers the outcome, it's my way of saying that

SunsetStrip · 27/01/2023 20:57

I never go back to an old name.

echt · 27/01/2023 21:00

I have a whole bunch of names I like in hand should I need them, and also one-offs. I rarely NC and only for stuff that would identify me/ my DD/my school as I've been round here so long.

People do dig around as I noticed in a thread several weeks ago where a poster had looked up some stuff about me and brought it into a thread where we were in disagreement. Needless to say they'd jumped to some wide of the mark conclusions, but to correct them would only have given out more information.

Rowthe · 27/01/2023 21:01

Every few months.

If I think I've given too much information out that I may become identifiable I'll switch.

I usually keep to the same one though unless I need to post something that I dont want linked back to my current username

You are doing it to placemark?

IglesiasPiggl · 27/01/2023 21:02

I use different names for different topics. I don't often give personal details anyway though, I try to stick to opinions and advice, which is a lot less identifying.

It's obviously I wish the op the best first and foremost as its the most polite thing to say
Then on the other hand it is also better way to keep tabs on the thread so if as and when I can offer a better analysis I can then process the thread later on, as sometimes during missions I have a quick read and note which threads I want to read and hopefully offer better perspective

I think it can come across as a bit strange and/or insincere?

CrackersCheeseAndWinePlease · 27/01/2023 21:08

I change mine every couple of months and I don't re use old usernames

Fair points, I'll take it under consideration and improve my wording

Thepossibility · 27/01/2023 21:15

Only once, because I thought of my last one while pissed.
I don't really care if I'm identified, I'm the sort that would say most things IRL and let the chips fall where they may.

How do you name change?

I use the app and tried to change it in the box where my username is and it wouldn't do it

You have to do it under your profile on desktop or the browser version. You can save any number of usernames so long as they're not already taken and switch between by just typing them into the username bit on the app.

You'll always have a default one, but can still use your others by over-typing (but careful not to name-change fail as it always goes back to your default for each new post).

MaverickGooseGoose · 27/01/2023 22:51

Hi do quite frequently, I never feel the need to announce it defeats the object imo.

welliesmellie · 27/01/2023 23:14

I change for almost every thread I post on (this one included). I've been "stalked" on here in the past and its not nice. I also change unimportant details of my posts, to make them less recognisable.

welliesmellie · 27/01/2023 23:18

I quite like that I can disagree with someone about (e.g.) politics on one thread, and bond with the same person about (e.g.) cats on another, without them realising they're meant to hate me. If only people could be so objective in real life! 🙂
