To think that the opposite of woke, is asleep?

Following on from a conversation with my elderly (but very with it) Aunt the other day.

She stated that she was anti-woke and I asked her if that just meant that she wasn't interested in equality, social justice any more. Being literally "asleep" to this sort of thing, as opposed to being awake or "woke". She definitely is not asleep to that stuff.

Another conversation with a (middle aged like me) friend and we agreed that when woke is used as an insult, it's no different to the old "political correctness gone mad" cry.

So, is anti-woke to be willingly asleep to stuff?

Yes when I think of woke it’s the sort of people who espouse kindness and tolerance while calling those with more conservative views ‘gammons’ and saying they are stupid, as so aptly demonstrated by
Thepeopleversuswork

This 😊

JenniferBarkley · 27/01/2023 14:08

Completely agree OP.

And as ever MN has become a single issue forum on the word.

peachescariad · 27/01/2023 14:09

Opposite of woke is common sense

MushMonster · 27/01/2023 14:13

The definition of woke is great, but "my" reality of it is PC gone past mad and into the land of BS. To the point that the word gives me the icks!
I am sure many woke people are lovely and sensible, but my experience associated to the word is generally bad.

barneshome · 27/01/2023 14:02

Really?
Woke people are amazing self absorbed and get angry when anyone has a different point of view to themselves and think that no one should be allowed to express an opinion that differs from their own
I call that ignorant and narrow minded and very right wing rater than kind

Isn't that exactly what Gymrabbit said?

MiaMoor · 27/01/2023 14:27

Woke used to be a term used by black people who were aware of racism I think?

It’s become a catch all for a group of people who are tolerant and kind to those who hold similar rigid beliefs, and abusive and dismissive to those who hold other beliefs.

It is used by people who espouse victimhood and the rest of the world being mortal enemies unless they capitulate.

There’s a video by Konstantin Kisin that’s worth watching. He touches on this issue.

@Gymrabbit I have no problem with people with conservative views per se. I do think a subset of people with conservative views are ill educated, ill-informed (getting most of their political opinions from the right-wing press) and often quite bigoted whom I have no problem calling gammons.

And you're quite happy to dish out "woke" as a catch-all insult so you should be able to take "gammon".

Your post is an excellent example of what I’d expect from someone who calls themselves “woke.”

It’s happy to denigrate and insult whole swathes of people for having the “wrong” politics and then says it’s therefore fine to use a racist insult towards them because of it.

TreadLight · 27/01/2023 14:27

For me, "woke" represents an authoritarian intolerance to views outside their own, simplified, version of what is right. It represents a complete absence of an understanding of the nuances in the issues being discussed.

rumship · 27/01/2023 14:30

@QuertyGirl I think you should watch this. This guy is a fantastic speaker and make so much sense on "WOKE"

Yup. This.

I find the "woke" are the most intolerant, unkind, self-absorbed, egotistical, arrogant, aggressive fascists around.

ZaZathecat · 27/01/2023 14:35

I agree with Treadlight.
In other circumstances, the opposite of 'woke' is ' fell asleep', to be pedantic about it

Yup. See also you can't say anything these days.

When anyone uses it on here (as an insult) I automatically can't take them seriously.

I do, however, fully agree with Obama here!

LavenderHillMob · 27/01/2023 14:41

I like to think I woke up to men's latest wheeze to stop pesky women having things they wanted...

I'm also alert to people throwing insults at round when they don't like other people asking questions.

I'm not anti-woke. I'm wide awake.

Do you also think it's bad to say women don't have penises?

Not at all.

ConcordeOoter · 27/01/2023 14:43

Woke is used as a specific term with a meaning other than progressive, though... lunacy trying to co-opt things most of us (in the UK at least) already agree with and turn them into an excuse to make war against people who disagree with you, control what they can/can't say, excuse thinly veiled prejudice and threatening behaviour from yourself while seeing it all the time in everyone else.

Awake is the opposite of Asleep

Woke is a specific term for people who want excuses to be horrible. You know like misogynist who want to call for feminists to be decapitated but still stick a rainbow flag on themselves and talk about being kind

donquixotedelamancha · 27/01/2023 14:46

To think that the opposite of woke, is asleep?

The opposite of asleep is awake.

The opposite of woke (in the new usage) is tolerant and unpretentious.

5128gap · 27/01/2023 14:48

The problem with 'woke' is its about 'waking up' to 'truths' as defined by the 'already woke' people.
Personally, those truths that I agree to be true, after over half a century on the planet, are not ones I was asleep to, so a suggestion I've suddenly been brought to a state of awareness is patronising and inaccurate.
Others of those 'truths' I don't personally agree to be true. Not because I need waking up, or to 'educate myself' but because I have already educated myself and drawn a different conclusion.
So, the opposite of woke to me is not asleep. The opposite of woke to me would be 'wish to be left alone to reach my own conclusions thank you'.

MilkyWaytoday · 27/01/2023 14:49

I sometimes think the woke people are the ones who are most asleep. They parrot things they don’t believe in themselves to be seen as “woke” but honestly do they really believe that 56 year old “Kellie jo” along the street 6foot tall in a wig and a 5 o’clock shadow is a woman? Of course they bloody don’t!!

DappledThings · 27/01/2023 14:49

Awake is what anti-vaxxers and the like describe themselves as with those of us who don't think the covid jab is a slow poison/the WEF want us all eating insects for every meal by 2025/the Queen was a lizard/the world is flat and there are additional lands run by aliens beyond the ice wall described as asleep.

donquixotedelamancha · 27/01/2023 14:52

And you're quite happy to dish out "woke" as a catch-all insult so you should be able to take "gammon".

In so far as these terms both have some validity (and most stereotypes which catch on do, to some extent) they are describing the same type of people from different demographics- intolerent, priggish and closed minded.

Naunet · 27/01/2023 14:55

Woke to me means extreme left. The type of idiots trying to stop others from playing that new Harry Potter game, threatening to ban reviewers and players from various platforms etc just because they got their knickers in a twist that JKR didn’t share their views on trans people. The type that don’t concern themselves with any real problems in the world, they just enjoy being the authoritarian moral police, whilst holding their own very questionable morals.
