Circumcision

I was thoroughly abused by several English mums of my acquaintance for having my sons circumcised at birth. Although I did my research and found it to be better from a number of perspectives, nothing would convince them it was reasonable. I am wondering if they will retract their accusations now that it has been revealed that Diana, saintliest of all mothers, had both her boys circumcised ...

Did Charles not have say in this? Why is Diana getting all the blame?

He's just as wrong as she was.

FanFckingTastic · 26/01/2023 19:59

England banned the docking of dogs' tails in 2007 - it's deemed illegal to chop bits off your dog unless there is a medical reason. I'm shocked that our kids don't benefit from the same protection as our dogs.

If there were significant medical benefits to removing a part of a child's body then I'm sure that we would be prescribing the procedure as a general health measure. We are not, because there are no significant medical benefits.

Dinodigger · 26/01/2023 19:59

My DH (American) is circumcised and it really spoils sex for him. His scar sometimes feels weird and he can't enjoy oral sex because of it. He says it turns pleasure into discomfort. Luckily for him he doesn't experience this during PIV but he can when mastubating.

templesit · 26/01/2023 20:12

I'd also be interested to know the reasons Diana and Charles decided this for their son(s).

It's totally unacceptable (unless for medical reasons).

sunflowersinbloom · 26/01/2023 20:16

Are you Jewish OP? I am and I had my son circumcised when he was a baby and it is something I really regret, felt pressured into and has traumatised me since (my son doesn't care and doesn't want me to feel bad about it, however, I have tremendous guilt). It's totally unnecessary and anachronistic and is done when both baby and mother are at their most emotionally and physically vulnerable.

It sounds a bit like you are trying to convince yourself about your decision. I think it should be banned unless medically necessary.

Associations between circumcision ad STIs may be affected by reduced condom use among circumcised men or by the area of the penis from which samples are taken.

'Rather, in our study circumcision was associated with higher STI rates overall, particularly for anogenital warts and syphilis' - link following in a minute

Of course, any man reaching the age of consent who is convinced by the evidence on circumcision reducing STIs can choose circumcision for himself.

Women married to circumcised men benefit from less transmission of - studies have shown, reduced risk of human papilloma virus. (cancer of the cervix) genital ulcers, herpes simplex virus type 2, syphillis, bacterial vaginosis, HIV, UTIs, penile cancer in men, not to mention good old cleanliness.

Reduced risk can be 0.00001%. Not really a good enough reason. If it was 100% immunity you might have a point.

Snugglemonkey · 26/01/2023 20:21

It is irrelevant who does it, it is never ok to mutilate anyone's genitals for no reason.

It's disgusting. And I am a very un-judgmental person, but I judge anyone who mutilates their son's genitals.

Bideshi · 26/01/2023 20:22

My older son - born early 1970s was circumcised and it was reasonably common then. My husband (British) had been brought up in America where it was pretty standard. His family had also been Jewish in the past and, although they had converted back in 1900, it was still considered the norm for males of the family. Largely for matters of hygiene- cervical cancer was very much an issue: nobody then would have guessed a simple inoculation would virtually do away with the perceived necessity. It was done at 2 days old before he left hospital. I found it upsetting but believed it was the right thing.
My younger son was not circumcised as by the time he was born attitudes had changed (and I had more of a say!)
I would never do it now, but people who are so vocal about it need to understand that times have changed, and many, many doctors advocated it then.
Also, remember before you throw too many 'barbarics' about that all Muslim males and all Jewish males are circumcised and that's an awful lot of the male population of this country.

PermanentTemporary · 26/01/2023 20:25

My husband's rabbi was always 100% clear that circumcision was not what made a person Jewish. How could it be?

Pallisers · 26/01/2023 20:27

I had my son in the US in the mid 90s and was under pressure to circumcise him - it was considered a routine part of childbirth for boys. I didn't discuss it with many people but those I did discuss it with were shocked we had chosen not to circumcise. I think that things are very different now.

Off point maybe. In general I have no opinion much on Harry and the book etc. But I DO think it is disgusting that something so private about William's health and body has been put in the public domain. Not sure if the book was the first public reference but whoever put it out there it is simply wrong.

Are those the tear-stains of a circumcised man on that page?

Your boy is cut now, there's no going back. But maybe next time teach him how to clean his penis when his foreskin naturally begins to retract, and teach him how to use condoms. No need to slice parts of his poor little body off him

custardbear · 26/01/2023 20:30

The HPV and HIV argument makes me cross, it's been religious practice in many religions way before HIV and HPV were known about.
It's mutilation and indefensible - anyone who could agree to if for no reason is brainwashed or stupid. Medical reasons only IMO.

Erm there's no citations or evidence there at all. Anyone can write anything and claim it's true.

Uncircumcised men are 73% happier in later life.

There can be no complications from circumcision if you don't try and chop off bits of your babies genitals 🤷🏻‍♀️

You're free to make your own choices for your kids but you sound really daft making these claims with no evidence and implying those of who didn't mutilate our babies have let them be unclean.

Mannymoomin · 26/01/2023 20:32

My 2 boys were circumcised at ages 13 and 10, they went in together and decided for themselves that they wanted it done, religious reasons. Recovery was absolutely horrendous for them.
Certainly glad I didn’t put them through it as babies. My husband and his 6 brothers were all older children/young teens when they had it done too between 30-40 years ago.

Do you also agree with FGM OP? Would you if Diana did?

Was JUST about to post this.

It's abuse. Sick and wrong. Unless medically NECESSARY it is an abhorrent practice.

This. I accidentally hit YANBU though 🙄

Why the fuck do you care what your sons penis looks like?

IntentionalError · 26/01/2023 20:36

IDGAF what Diana or any other celebrity allowed to be done to their children, although I feel sorry for their children.
Mutilation of the genitalia of children for non-medical reasons is wrong and should be outlawed.

BakedTattie · 26/01/2023 20:38

aye ok then pal 👍🏻

good one

gravyriceandchips · 26/01/2023 20:40

I've never really thought about it but on reading this and thinking about it I think it's wrong.

I'd never insult anyone for doing it but in my head I'd think what is the point of this?unless it was medically needed.

What is the point of it actually? Genuine non goady question?

if it doesn't need doing why do it?

My husbands cock looks wonderful completely intact, he keeps it clean and it's all natural!

You're talking shit!

If he preferred me to have female circumcision and to be cut because he thought it looked best and was cleaner, we'd not be together.

And who says Diana was a saintly mother, she certainly wasn't on my eyes!
