Got caught out. Had no idea was in the zone. Bought my diesel car because thought it was greener at the time. Just so upset. Trains were on strike. Never drive near London otherwise. Got fine letter late (royal mail strikes maybe?) I'm on about 2p above minimum wage. This just feels shit. £160 fine for one screw up. Off you go trolls

😱£160 penalty? That’s horrendous. Are there signs warning about the ULEZ that you missed?

RNBrie · 25/01/2023 19:57

We bought our diesel car because the government told us they were more environmentally friendly too and I even said to DP at the time that I just didn't believe it and he sent me all these articles telling me i was wrong. We sold our car last year and replaced with a ulez friendly one because I knew I'd stray into the zone at some point.

OP is the fine halved if you pay within a set number of days?

LeavesOnTrees · 25/01/2023 19:57

I sympathise. I recently got a 130 fine for parking where I wasn't supposed to.
In my defence there were no signs, the street was empty and I wasn't blocking anyone.

OP you're not the only one to be caught with the full fine due to the RM strikes. I'd argue that, it's ridiculous

Also, take a deep breath 😮‍💨

Seeline · 25/01/2023 20:01

Be warned - the ulez is expanding to cover the whole of London - so all outer boroughs too - in August

HotMess21 · 25/01/2023 20:01

That's unfortunate, @OldCow1.

When was the fine issued? If the fine is paid within14 days of issue, the penalty is halved. Not much consolation, I guess ... 🤷🏾‍♀️

Swiftswatch · 25/01/2023 20:02

You didn’t get fined £160 for driving in the zone though, you for fined for not paying the £12.5 charge.
There are a lot of sings telling you when you are entering ULEZ so YABU.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/01/2023 20:03

I sympathise we got a letter for speeding only they said we'd ignored the two before which we never received. 3 points and £380 fine although im grateful it wasn't worse. 38 in a 30 which we thought was a 40 (unfamiliar area)

There are big signs on each road at the entrance of said road how could you miss them!

IwishIwasSupermum · 25/01/2023 20:11

You have my sympathy, I’ve come home to a parking fine, I went to a retail park that has some pretty big shops, John Lewis, Homebase, Homebargains, TKMaxx and more. Unbeknown to me the carpark landlord has brought in a 2 hour time limit which considering type of shops is not enough, I was 18 mins over and has potentially cost me £100. I’ve appealed but no wonder the high street is dying. I’d rather they put a pay and display in, they can shove their free parking up somewhere where the sun doesn’t shine.

FlounderingFruitcake · 25/01/2023 20:11

There are signs and if you use Google Maps it also tells you, this I know well because the current ULEZ is literally at the end of my road! Still though we all make mistakes and living and driving in London it’s the cost of doing business, I got a fine for parking outside my own house once, I argued the suspension signage was inadequate but they still weren’t having it. I console myself with a reminder of how low our council tax is!

No, nobody does care. Why would anyone random give a shit that you got a fine?

The comment about the train, that's a fucking disgusting thing to say. You should be ashamed.

NoCatsToday · 25/01/2023 20:14

The signs are hard to miss. I guess you didn't realise they referred to you. £160 is a lot of money to pay for this mistake but the ULEZ is there to stop polluting old diesel cars killing people with their fumes so I can't feel too sad.

ditherydotty · 25/01/2023 20:14

It's a disgusting charge that once again will impact the low earners. One friend may be forced to quit her job as a domiciliary care worker as they cannot afford a ulez compliant used car as simply can't afford to get a loan.

LlynTegid · 25/01/2023 20:17

If your letter was delayed by the postal strike, appeal, see if you can get the penalty reduced.

There should be no need to even consider the ULEZ. National standards should apply that are at least as stringent.

If you are not noticing road signs, you must have been distracted and thinking of something else when you entered.

OldCow1 · 25/01/2023 20:18

Balloon trip aren't you lovely!

OP posts:
Zanatdy · 25/01/2023 20:19

It’s extending to all london boroughs from August. My friends just recently bought a camper van, her lifetime dream, and sold her car to help finance it as she couldn’t afford both. We live on the South London borough, so in Surrey but if she’s goes 1 mile up the road she’s got to pay £12 per day!

I am as it happens. But making flippant comments about suicide is disgraceful, it tends to get my back up.
